The farther I come, the farther I fall
Whatever I knew was nothing at all
It was nothing at all, just making me small
Smaller and smaller, I fall back

Sooner or later with a view from the ground
Chasing the race and the races will run you down
Sooner or later with a view from the ground
And a tear in your eye, you say, baby, why can't we fly

In the blue sky
High in the blue sky

Be my singing lesson, be my song
When I tell you I'm falling, you tell me I'm strong
The trees have grown tall, the birds have flown high
Higher and higher, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

I'll fly over a rainbow, I'll be sun kissed
Sail around the planet Venus
And send a long letter way back home
That says all that I know, all that I know

Is the blue sky
High in the blue sky

In the blue sky
High in the blue sky

The farther I come, the farther I fall
Whatever I knew was nothing at all
The trees have grown tall, the birds have flown high
Higher and higher, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

No opinion on the guitar, but her voice on this track and others is one of the better sounds on RP, which has plenty of good sounds.

How do you do that?
An easy 10+
My next door's neighbor's elderly mother asks why you don't play more Carol King?
This may sound strange, but after the first few lines I thought I was listening to a cover of a Replacements song.  Good tune!
Like that geeetar going on with the fuzz and resonating tones along with her strong clear vocals.  Yup I like it.

Totally agree. I just read an article on the guy who produced Flaming Red (Jay Joyce) - he's produced Eric Church, Carrie Underwood and some other really big acts recently. The song Tony on Flaming Red is some powerful sh!t.

Her best album.
i love her. her voice hits me just right. hell of a guitarist and lyricist too. i love "i'm making pies" and also her very different song for the underrated film "it's the rage." she skillfully mixes the  personal with the political. where have i heard of that concept before..
Wouldn't mind her rocking out on another record.
IDK, reminds me a bit of Foreigner.
Imagine that...Patty Griffin and Robert Plant together....oh wait.

On the other hand, thanks Bill and 'Becca as I just wrote a song and was trying to remember last night the name of the Led Zep song that has a similar chord progression...couldn't do it.   Now.... Tangerine!
Patty is awesome.  I heard that "Silver Bell" is finally going to released.

told my 14 yr old son to check Flaming Red on youtube and I believe he's hooked, he'd locked the door and I could hear Blue Sky, then some others, he was being rocked and pleasingly vamped!  He's growing up in there
Add me as well to the "Patty Griffin can make any song good" cohort.  {#Clap}
{#Arrowd} HAHAHAHAHAHA!  Exactly what I thought after scrambling to find out what angel-voice was fronting this lightly funky tune.

So, I'll ask it again, "Has she ever recorded a bad song?"

Holy crap can this girl even make a bad song?  Never heard of her til a few years back on RP, color me happy to have made the discovery.

Love you Patty.

This is one of the songs I put on "repeat" on my CD player.  Love it - it makes me feel better about life. {#Sunny}  And it has this really neat HP slideshow going on, too - lots of gorgeous pictures from our RPeeps.
Excellent work, y'all!  {#Clap}

Hey, Patty Griffin I like! Didn't know she had some "more rock/less country" in her repertoire...
Like Patty, alot, but this sounds very formulated.  Nothing remarkable hear.

Patty Griffin - "Flaming Red" Live

Patty Griffin performs the song, "Flaming Red" from that same titled album of 1998.

Yes! This album was so hard, I loved it. I hope someday she does something along the same lines again.     blindpoetic

"I wish she would do some more "tear the shit out of it" sounding songs on her nest record. She's kind of abandoned that stuff, unfortunately."       SkeeterNYC

"  "flaming red" was my first patty griffin album, needless to say, i was blown away. after backtracking to her other albums, i was surprised, and still am of her range. this proves she did it before and i cant wait for her to do this type of sound again. until then, i'll just be oh so happy with what whatever she decides to do. amazing! and thanks for the post. obviously going on my fav list."       mistermut

This is from Patty's rocking-out album.  And does she ever.  But the rest of her work is more acoustic-oriented.  And its all gorgeous.

Yes...she's generally an acoustic act with an occasional country edge, more like...I don't know, maybe Alison Kraus.  A great listen, either way.

This song is good to begin with.  It's hooky from the beginning.  So when it builds and the production gets even more excellent as the song goes on, it blows you away.

This is a great CD, I don't know about one stonker of a record though.
It's one hell of a CD, best of the year for me.

That guitar intro always tricks me into thinking that something badass by Shiina Ringo has just started.
Like this one for example.

Sadly I don't think she would ever pass the LRC.

Patty? Is Bill seeing someone behind Rebecca's back? For shame, Bill... Just messin' with you. Patti Griffin IS wonderful, isn't she?
I love this CD and think it's her strongest to date. Her last effort just didn't work for me. She's going to be playing at the Fall Strawberry and I hope that it's not a snoozefest like her last performance. She needs to plug in and ROCK.

Stonker?
Great songwriter and an even greater singer. Why she isn't a bigger star is a bit of a mystery. But methinks that's a good thing.
Serious.
hmmmmmm!
Very talented singer, guitar work isn't especially great but is very pleasant. Her recordings (in my experience) ALWAYS sound good. I just heard Living with Ghosts (1996) on a ~$6,000 set up at work here and was floored. Amazing detail, even from such a relatively inexpensive set up. The performance and detail exhibited in her recordings is amazing.
Bill has 8 of 13 tracks from this album. And they are all great. This is one stonker of a record!
Man, I ALWAYS like this song!

Actually, I was a little disappointed in Flaming Red. I much prefer her stuff from 1,000 Kisses and A Kiss in Time (yes, I know there is overlap between the two). Not to say that Flaming Red isn't a good record - it is. I also like the first few songs I have heard off of her new album, which seems to me more in line with her last couple of CDs. Just a matter of taste, I guess.

Nope, I'm the other, right side of the state (correct I mean, not when looking at a map) ;) I actually don't get over to St. Louis very much... was just there this weekend but it's only about the 3rd time I've ever spent any signicant chunk of time there. I think she was in town recently somewhere near here though recently. I don't get to many shows though, too expensive and too little time in my schedule. This one just HAD to get bumped up to a 10... Long overdue...
Love this one--great cranking out of a car whilst cruising down the backroads.

And she sounds just as good in person. Awesome singer and song writer. As she admits, she is losing her range as she gets older.

Well said. This is one of my favorite albums in my collection. Great one for the road trip, too.
Patty is so righteous .Beautifully excellent! And a huge thanks to RP for introducing me to her. I went out and bought Flaming Red without any reservations after hearing "Change" and "Tony."

Reminds me of a contemporary radio pop-rock tune with its jubilant melodicism and pulsing beat... but actually good!

Nearly broke my car speakers with this song several years ago...
Oh I so like this. It is rocky and popish and still some Texas, but not over the top.
holy crap! You know all those times when people say "This rocks!" and it doesn't? This is definitely NOT one of those times! THIS ROCKS! Okay, sorry, I'll go back to sleep now...
Patty's Albums cover such a myriad of different styles. Flaming Red I would put into the category of Driving rock, i.e. music that helps you discover the top speed of your car.
she sounds exactly like avril lavigne, only the song is better lol
