Occurred to me the other day
You've been gone now a couple years
Well, I guess it takes a while
For someone to really disappear
And I remember where I was
When the word came about you
It was a day much like today
The sky was bright and wide and blue
And I wonder where you are
And if the pain ends when you die
And I wonder if there was
Some better way to say goodbye
Today my heart is big and sore
It's trying to push right through my skin
Won't see you any more
I guess that's finally sinking in
'Cause you can't make somebody see
With the simple words you say
All their beauty from within
Sometimes they just look away
And I wonder where you are
And if the pain ends when you die
And I wonder if there was
Some better way to say goodbye
Some better way to say goodbye
You've been gone now a couple years
Well, I guess it takes a while

Here I go with my inner snark. Won't it be a bitch, and for more than a few, if the pain DOESN'T end when you die? What if something out there smacks you sideways, says you done did it all wrong now go back and try again!?
Snark, snark. But it's one of the reasons why I don't risk going before it's time. No point in pushing it, don't'cha think?

This song becomes more precious and heartrending the older you get and the more death and pain you encounter. My eyes seem to be watering- it must be allergies đŸ˜‰. Thank you Ms. Griffin

Sitting here in tears. Dammit. Patty Griffin does that to me. I've just resolved to use any disposable income I have to see this woman in concert ONCE, no matter where she is (if it's Montréal, so much the better, but Sedona would be fine, too.) Life's too short to drink bad port. I think Ernest Hemmingway said that, but don't quote me. The point is, life's too short to miss out on the magic, and Ms. Griffin has it, to the n'th power.
Off to put my new computer on hold and look for tickets instead. *Tossing faerie dust over my shoulder as I go*
Bumping, but only because it's been too long since the last bump (even if said last bump was 5 minutes ago). Missing you and your perspective

Goosebumps.
There is no way I could see her live, I would be on the ground crying....

She's on tour right now--catch her if you can! The new songs she performed were outstanding.

I too have recently lost a loved one, my mom who lived until 100, early in April past and at this point in my life I just could not let the memories go so I've moved off my boat and into her and dad's house in which I've lived off and on since age 3 when it was built 71 years ago. Now they're both with me all the time.

Losing a loved one, for me, really doesn't seem to hit me until a few years later...at least, the real feeling of "they're never coming back". True with my dad and brother when I was a teen, and true when I lost my mom about four years ago. The first few months are the hardest overall, but the true feeling of someone being gone didn't really hit me until I'd go a few days without thinking about the fact they died. In a way, that was even harder, because you felt like you were forgetting them.

One of the most powerful songs ever. Taking care of my Dad full time now during his hospice care that started last week. Lost my brother and my cousin last month. This just made me sit and cry my eyes out. Just as it has before.
The Bustle in a House
The bustle in a house
The morning after death
Is solemnest of industries
Enacted upon earth, -
The sweeping up the heart,
And putting love away
We shall not want to use again
Until eternity

Gorgeous.

Every time I hear this song, I tell myself this will be the time I don't emotional. I lost my cousin and closest friend to suicide 29 years ago. Even though we grew up close and were life long friends, we were arguing when he died. When Patty gets to the line "I wish there was a better way to say goodbye", I lose it. Every time.
Can never get enough of that song! Heavenly.

Life's too short to drink bad port. I think Ernest Hemmingway said that, but don't quote me. The point is, life's too short to miss out on the magic, and Ms. Griffin has it, to the n'th power.
Off to put my new computer on hold and look for tickets instead. *Tossing faerie dust over my shoulder as I go*
And your post could almost bring me to tears, Cynaera! RadioParadise is a wonderful place. The music is incredible, and so are most of the members! (We just have to put up with the evil posts of the trolls as part of the price of membership. After all, even paradise has mosquitoes.)
Wonderful lyrics, very nice musicality, beautiful voice...what more one ask?

Sitting here in tears. Dammit. Patty Griffin does that to me. I've just resolved to use any disposable income I have to see this woman in concert ONCE, no matter where she is (if it's Montréal, so much the better, but Sedona would be fine, too.) This is really lovely.

I miss a few good friends a whole lot when I hear this song. One in particular. But I can finally listen again.

I cannot hear this song without crying. Particularly, THIS version, but any version makes me misty at the very least.

Whenever Bill plays this song, I have to stop and listen, even though I know I'm going to end up crying.

I went into Wikipedia and gave credit to Patty Griffin for this song as a "tribute" to Jeff. It might not be true, but an awful lot of people on RP seem to think so, and I suspect people who've seen Patty live heard what she said about what she was thinking when she wrote this song.

I see a lot of comments from Oct 6th. This year that date marked 11 years since my best friend, a great young drummer, died in a car accident. This song always makes my think of him. RIP Josh.
one last good cry for the year....amazing

Agreed. I used to think the studio version was the 'perfect' song.... Now this is.
First time I've heard this version. I didn't think there could be a better recording than the studio version, but this tops it.

Chills.
One of the few times that the live version is better than the studio...and the studio version is a 9!

I gave it an 8 too, when I wasn't listening to it. Then when it was playing I remembered how it made me feel. Few songs make me just stop and stare into space. How can it not be a 10.
naw ...... 12 guy ...... it has to be a 12 .... anything that brings tears to your eyes decades later ...... naw .... maybe a 15 .... yeh .... 15+
