From the Wikipedia:
Sodade (Saudade) is a Portuguese word that doesn't have a direct translation into English: It describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing may never return. A stronger form of saudade may be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost lover, or a family member who has gone missing, moved away, separated, or died.
I wish I could have seen Cesaria perform, that would have been a real treat.
i feel all that. thanks for putting it here. gorgeous song.
Or me brain is futzed (hey, you in the back, no snark!)
Sounds like Portugese 'Fado"music to my ears. No bad thing, though. A '7' at first listen.🐨
Yes, well, she's from Cape Verde (a Portuguese "overseas department" until 1975). However:
"What exactly is morna, the musical form she has made her own? A Cape Verdean ballad, usually expressing nostalgia, which goes at a languid pace: a Lusophone answer to the American blues. It's often compared to Portuguese fado, but the two have little in common apart from their dark harmonies and use of the delicately expressive 12-stringed Portuguese guitar. Where fadistas belt out their laments in tightly structured bursts of feeling, the morna singer tends to meander. And nothing's more mournful than morna."

So grateful I saw her perform many years ago at a lovely outdoor venue in Saratoga, California. I went by myself because I didn't know anyone who knew her music.
Call me up next time!
This is about as American-centric and racist statement as one can utter. The concept that there's American Music and everything else is "World Music" separates the USA from the rest of the world with the implication that World Music is somehow inferior. Just like the asshats that think only foreigners have accents.
What utter crap to say that this is "American-centric and racist". The OP was simply stating that he liked the B V S C. 🐨
An I the only one who hears her sing Santa Claus?
now you know how that name came to be...

Have you heard Trump speak?
Donald Trump and Cesaria Evora should not be in the same sentence. I agree with your sentiment about the previous poster, though.
A sentiment echoed by many I'm sure.
Definitely echoed here. Yup. After 14 years of enjoying the immense privilege of being an RP listener, I am making my first comment. This will be an excellent forum in which I might learn to practise great restraint at times. Or not. Right now, I am restraining myself from giving some very strong recommendations for therapy, to help someone perhaps start to connect with emotions....
That is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Congrats!
You must not spend much time online. At the very least, I see no moral lines crossed here.

Damn! That is some word! Thanks for digging up the definition. I think this song is great. I'm a real sucker for songs in Portuguese.
Merci cesaria

My fave comment in a long time.
(I do like this song too.)
Please, please, remove from playlist.

I am so very, very sorry for you.
Always hated the term World Music, what does it even mean? All music ?
I am so very, very sorry for you.
I concur.

I always assumed someone at the record company? made a mistake with the word saudade. But it turns out it's the spelling they use in Cape Verdean Creole, according to wiki.

Saw her perform in Casablanca in 1998 and she was awesome. Such emotion in her voice. I believe this song is about a longing for your homeland. Wonderful piece of music experience, not surprised RP is spinning her.

I like the way you think
Like this song... Rated it a -9- at first hearing...still there for me.
Went to Amazon and bought all he music... Uneven, but some more good music...
Gets the feet dancing in the sand and a need for cold beer in hand to keep my balance... Must have two...You never taste the first one.
Beach music... If you don't like it just head for the airport, pick nice friendly airline and buy a ticket on next flight out.Tell airlines "Beach, warm sand, palm trees, women wearing almost nothing, nice warm water ..." When you get there tell em " A-J sent me"...
You decide if/when you're coming back...

Sad to hear that she's no longer with us but we have the legacy of her music for evermore.
I prefer the Bonga version, myself. Probably 'cause I heard that one first and was accustomed to it. You'll notice in his version he sings "este nha terra de Cabo Verde" as opposed to Sao Nic'lau. I believe Sao Nic'lau is probably the way the composer wrote it. Since the composer was born there. (According to Wiki).
I love writing in coffeehouses - especially with exotic music playing.
Interesting, "the coffee house novelist...."
Do you type or scribble?

Exactly.

Whoa....cannot believe you feel this way about this song! This is one of the most beautiful songs ever IMHO......you must not have a soft swaying chillin side then?
Please, please, remove from playlist.
Ditto!
What they said
Today, it's a "9"... Thank you Bill and RP...

"Sodade és mia terra San Nic'lau..."
I thought this sounded familiar ;)
voice is nice but she hits a very strident point and that catches me the wrong way. Still very nice
she hits a very strident point? maybe you should just enjoy the music, professor.
Beautiful voice.

Beautiful voice.
Another song I'd never heard before from a beautiful singer I had never heard of.
Another reason why I listen. There's always something new to discover.
She will always be among us with her voice, her art and her spirit.

We are blessed that part of her soul remains with us in her music! Although I am more & more loathing googtube & its programmers for all their cruddy changes, I discovered Cesária through this site, for which I'm thankful. She is one of 500 worldwide artists I've created playlists for on my musical tribute channel. chuck in Arizona

important what is and from where comes that style, but finally most important is the happiness and the sense and all incredible feelings which give us the music . She is splendid!
