He said, "My dear Mother, lay down to sleep
Lay down, dear Mother, lay down and rest your tired head
I know you're just sleeping, I know you are blessed"
Lay down, dear Mother, lay down and rest your head
I know you're sleeping, I know you are blessed
I know, my dear Mother, just let yourself down to sleep
for I'll miss you now 'til so many tears while I weep
To lay down, dear Mother, lay down and rest your tired head
I know you're just sleeping, I know you are blessed
I know, dear Mother, you lay yourself down to sleep
and I'll miss you now 'til so many tears while I weep
Amen!
A bit of trivia. Durutti Column was the name of an anarchist militia in Spain during the civil war.
The real name is Buenaventura Durruti but Vini Reilly made a mistake and Durruti became Durutti.

Almost - the original name was Durruti
Vinnie is a genius...
A bit of trivia. Durutti Column was the name of an anarchist militia in Spain during the civil war.
In fact the correct name of the anarchist leader is Buenaventura Durruti (two "r" and one "t"), but Vini Reilly made a transcription mistake and the name became Durutti (two "t" and one "r").
And this is why I listen to RP.... discovering new-to-me artists
A bit of trivia. Durutti Column was the name of an anarchist militia in Spain during the civil war.
For a mistake Vini Reilly called the band Durutti instead of Durruti, which should have been the right name, coming from José Buenaventura Durruti Dumange, a Spanish anarchist and revolutionary.
Same happened again just now. I heard it had to see who it was and then I understood.
Wonderful music.
I can't help but thinking of all those millions of children who were abused and mistreated by their mothers, or abandoned.
Not EVERY child is loved by its mother.
The divine Earth mother can carry all your pain, and give peace in return.
Choose anyway to love.
Here's my other favourite "mother" song called "Never far Behind" by Texan troubadour Ryan Bingham
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQmU1fN6ZJw
Ryan Bingham sings about his late mother who was alcoholic and committed suicide when he was only a boy. I tried to get this song onto RP playlist but alas too little support, but were it a trumpet version of stairway to heaven then maybe it would be on rotation

"and I'll miss you now, so many tears will I weep"
And lyrics is correct, Mr. Contaminator(https://www.songtexte.com/songtext/the-durutti-column/requiem-for-my-mother-4bdfd376.html)
Hard to believe there's something NOT on the internet, but I couldn't find the lyrics either.
Great song. Still no lyrics on the net, so I tried as best as I could. Maybe someone could improve them. Here goes (italic parts are the ones I'm not quite sure of):
My brother's spirit came to me when I was weak
He said, "My dear Mother, lay down to sleep
Lay down, dear Mother, lay down and rest your tired head
I know you're just sleeping, I know you are blessed"
Lay down, dear Mother, lay down and rest your head
I know you're sleeping, I know you are blessed
I know, my dear Mother, just let yourself down to sleep
for I'll miss you now to so many tears while I weep
To lay down, dear Mother, lay down and rest your tired head
I know you're just sleeping, I know you are blessed
I know, dear Mother, you lay yourself down to sleep
and I'll miss you now to so many tears while I weep
Absolutely. Some very fine work.
Thank you for reminding me...
absolutely brilliant... love it...

By complete and total coincidence because I didn't know what either movie was actually about, I happened to watch “Control” and “24 Hour People" in the same week, it was quite the bookends of Manchester music quinky dink. I loved the last scene in "24 Hour People" where “God”(Steve Coogan) talking to Tony Wilson(Steve Coogan):
God:“…it was a pity you didn’t sign The Smiths, but you were right about Mick Hucknall his music is rubbish and he’s a ginger…” (took some research but I laughed even more!!!) God:“Vini Riley by the way, is way over due for a revival. You might think about a greatest hits… it’s good music to chill-out to.” Tony: “Yeah you’re right.” God: “I usually am…”
The lyrics don't seem to be available anywhere online (or maybe my Googlefu is failing badly). Anybody got them?
me too!
The sounds he knocks out are like those of Gerry Leonard, who can be heard on one or two Jonatha Brooke CDs, among many, many other places. He also has a solo CD out.
Check out his rig at spookyghost.com.
Its good but it can be hard to find as I don't think its in print any longer....
You can buy it from Amazon or from https://www.townsend-records.co.uk/artist.php?artist=Durutti+Column
The Best Of is a good CD (not the tracks I would have picked for a Best Of, but that's the nature of the beast I suppose) and the CD it originally comes from Someone Else's Party is excellent - especially the track "Goodbye" which, for me, is even more effecting than "Requiem".
Does anyone know how the rest of the CD is? I want to hear this again - now!

And props to ryuujin23 — Psychic TV kicks ass
Thanks for playing a fave this morning!
Eeeeeeew!
Looks like I'm going to have to blow a paycheck at Amazon to catch up on all the music I have been exposed to here on RP.

+1 for cool band name. Having a cool and edgy back story to the band name helps boost them up into the coveted "+1" category.
