It was a pretty picture
It almost made me cry
He's got Big imagination
It's better than real life

He can be a macho man
And now he's a game show host
Well one minute hilarious comedian
Now he's an undercover cop

Say

Oh - let the poor boy dream
Oh - livin' make-believe

So how can we be strangers
He's got no personality
It's just a clever imitation
Of the people on TV

A line for every situation
He's learnin' trivia and tricks
Havin' sex and eatin' cereal
Wearin' jeans and smokin' cigarettes now

Oh - let the poor boy dream
Oh - livin' make-believe
Oh - let the poor boy dream
Oh - livin' make-believe

I can be you and you can be me
In my mundo, todo el mundo
Everyone's happy and everyone's free
Todo mundo, mundo mambo
Here in my mundo where nothing is wrong
Todo mundo, in my mundo
I'm a lady and you are a man
Mundo mambo, todo el mundo

Oh - let the poor boy dream
Oh - livin' make-believe
In my mundo, todo mundo
Mundo mambo, in my mundo
Todo el mundo, mundo mambo
Mundo mambo, Todo mundo

Oh - let the poor boy dream
Oh - livin' make-believe
Mundo mambo, todo el mundo
In my mundo, todo mundo
Todo el mundo, mundo mambo
In my mundo, mundo mambo

please: every single day DB and/or TH is TOO much!
Saw his Rei Momo show in St. Louis.  He started with a microphone, guitar and a bare stage with a curtain.  I thought, wow, he's really come a long way from Talking Heads.
After a few songs, the curtain raised with this huge band & enormous sound.  What a great show!
Just gotta pipe up to say this is far & away my favorite David Byrne I hear on RP. Thanks Bill !!
Really love Byrne, but this solo experiment to perform Salsa and Mambo music in english really failed! Take it from a Puertorican 🇵🇷, Totally out of rythim.

David: Time to think of a Talking Heads reunion tour
byrne this repetitive garbage. thanks!
Классный Дэвид!
Just dropping in to say this is my favorite TH/DB song by far.

One a week is nowhere near enough. I could live with one a day though. As long as I was around to hear it.

"maybe play one song per week."

LOL

This is a wonderful album. I played it a thousand times since it was released. Still wonderful!
This was a bit all over the place, not what I expected after the first beats. And I liked it! Also I'm proud that I recognized Byrne's voice before checking.

Are you suggesting that your taste should "shine through" instead?  (With 27% of your ratings at 1, you seem to be fed up with a whole lot.)

The poster in question rated "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" by Bob Dylan as a "1", so hey, maybe you gotta take his ratings with a grain of salt or three.
Was going to see him touring for this album in '89. Then the big earthquake hit California just a few days before and the show was cancelled. Missing the show wasn't the biggest tragedy of the EQ, but it was still a big bummer.
It's 2:00 Friday afternoon on a warm spring day, the windows are all open, the boids are chirpin' and I'm sitting down to work after having a nice tostada lunch. I'm pretty sure Bill knows this and that all I really want to do is take a nap and so he's doing his best to help keep me awake with this one. And I think it's working, except now all I want to do is DANCE!
 Skydog wrote:

Well I don't think there was much to ruin here - this song is repetitive ad nauseam. Could be fun to dance for the first 2 minutes though.

Speaking 12 years into your future, Mr. Byrne not only gets over his Latin phase, he goes on to create a fabulous Broadway show featuring music from his entire career, including lots of great Talking Heads tunes. The future is so bright, you might need shades.
{#Fire}Mambo madness...

Well I'm giving it an 8.

Feel bad saying this, but this would be so much prettier if someone else were singing it.  The groove is to die for, and I love David Byrne's voice for other songs, but to me it seems at cross purposes.
Willie Colón performs in this track! That explains a lot!
Cool beans

That's funny, because although I agree not all his stuff is gold, I hadn't heard this one till recently, and I totally love it.

Hot summers day at Central Park Summerstage, 1990 as well.  Must've been 102 degrees.  In the shade.
The whole band in all white, drenched.  Quite a show.

My brain is going to explode! Byrne/TH have a massively diverse catalog. I might at least understand how you got that impression if you put this comment on a track from Stop Making Sense or something, but this sounds nothing like any of his other stuff. Just what?
I'm sure Mr Byrne has good intentions but he ruins every song with his "singing"

Saw this performed live in a small theatre in New London, CT with every soul in the audience on there feet dancing frenetically.

Thanks for agreeing with me, ladies. The Goldsmiths ordinarily do an impeccable job of programming here, but it's well documented across this forum that DB and TH are in FAR too heavy of a rotation (at the expense of other artists whose music is only occasionally heard, if ever) and that the resistance and pleading is well established and growing.

I noticed it too.

8.32 Talking Heads - Totally Nude

12.16 David Byrne - Make Believe Mambo

A programming glitch, where TH and DB are viewed as different artists?

Problem is, they sound the same.

And we're spoiled, because Bill is usually pretty good at avoiding overplay, except when a heavily playlisted artist like Radiohead or Neko Case releases something new.

You know, I have a sneaking suspicion that if RP, just for laughs, had labeled this track with the name of some Brazilian musician instead of David Byrne's, the very same people running around saying how badly this sucks would be falling all over themselves to post what an amazing groove it is.

The reflexive anti-Byrne stuff is getting kind of old, guys.

I was really enjoying the intro and tapping my feet, then David Byrne's voice came in and I had to hit mute. It's just his voice that gets on my tits, I don't know why - he can at least sing in tune. It's just one of those things, maybe like Marmite. Cred to his inventive songwriting and sense of humour, but I just can't listen to his voice. My loss I'm sure :(

Not only do I think you are completely right in this, but it is apparent that not only is a little knowledge a dangerous thing, but when combined with a self-conscious, self-regarding sense of sophistication, the result is neither smart nor insightful. I fear that this describes too many listeners.
Obviously, it is not possible to please everyone. However, the general and apparently deeply felt antipathy for David Byrne (at least on the part of a goodly number of listeners here) is a bit difficult for me to understand. For me, he continues to be interesting and sufficiently quirky enough to merit attention. If nothing else, there is no small amount of humor in his music.

This is so strained it's laughable. Like asking Conway Twitty to sing Freewheel Burning by Judas Priest.

Would love to see a Reality TV show with David Byrne and Bjork working and doing stuff around real people for a living ... could you imagine them both working at a Dairy Queen?

What kind of items would they create to eat? how would they call out your order? what would they wear?

Its too perfect ... thow in Missy Elliot as a guest appearence and you have TV perfection
i don't want to like this!
Todo el mundo, mundo mambo

DB and Mambo, razors and rum. Why DB thinks this sounds good is amazing. One of the few ones I have given to any RP song.
Love Byrne and TH, hate this.
This album, and his collaboration on the Brazil Classics (Beleza Tropical) added a dimension to DB that catches many folk out. He was SO recognisable as Talking Heads, and thats all people expect him to be. Very very talented fella.
Gotta love this guy.... he's such a talent.
The really great thing is he has this INCREDIBLE brass section, and Celia Cruz, in one of her last recordings
different music, different style, SAME SHITTY VOICE!

Can't say I agree with the first statement, but the latter is right on! I bought this album as soon as it came out and it took me a couple of months to enjoy it. I kept wishing it were in Spanish. But, it is what it is. Went to iTunes and bought it all over again this summer! In spite of what many here on RP say, I need MORE Byrne!

ya gotta love dave's diversity, i thinks it's pretty cool

David Byrne AGAIN????
I wish he'd get over his Latin music phase. This sux. I'll give him a 2 instead of a 1 cause he was so awesome with the Heads.
renlat wrote:

I like this song and I've tried on more than one occasion to upload some Latin music including a couple by Tito Puente but they've all been squashed. So, I suppose if RP listeners actually liked real Latin music it would be on the playlist. Until they're ready for the real deal this will have to suffice...
Almost an insult to real Cuban music.
Why should Byrne not do this, I think it's nice
Quirky fellow isn't he... Gotta Love him.....
What's next Byrne? Vegas?
LOVE that Latin beat! It makes me want to dance at my desk (and my co-workers would think I'm nuts)!
I first heard this coming from a Jeep at Killington, VT after skiing. I asked the guy playing it and had to go buy it. The whole disk cranks!
I'd like to take this opportunity to assert my latin-ness in certifying the awesomeness of this song. Not a "10" awesome, but at least an 8-awesome. When she did "Mi Tierra," Gloria Estefan hired all the awesomest Cuban musicians to back her Cuban ass up, and the album comes off feeling like a Disney World representation of what Cuban music sounds like. Most if not all of David Byrne's Latin music efforts sound infinitely more authentic than a lot of Latin musicians' music. Props.

David Byrne was great as the TH front in his youth. Sadly, neither of these elements are -- or ever will be -- at play here or forever more. So thankful for their coming together in that place and time, recordings, and Radio Paradise.
hated this phase of DB' music at first ... but that didn't last very long. NAKED became one of my favorite TH/DB recordings next to Remain in Light
I saw him do this album live with a 12 piece latin band. It was unbelievably fabulous!
This is pleasant background music, but little more. It strikes me as unimaginative. Never thought I'd refer to anything Byrne did in such a way, but there you go.

Bought this album many years ago, after Byrne's Brazilian compilations came out. Took me awhile to get into it - I kept waiting to hear Spanish, but I got over it. Great album. Now I need to go out and get a new CD of Beleza Tropical. Fabulous album!
I don't know where this one vanished to, but hearing it again makes me happy. I love this song, and it is a great album too (must replace it!).
I'll be in the minority with this comment: This is one of my favorite David Byrne songs. The drums, the horns, the groove, the laid back vocals - it's all heavenly to me. I know there are better songs in this genre and better Byrne songs in his catalog, but this one is one of my favorites. It makes me smile and sway.

A fun song, I totally dig it, it's helping wake me up at work too, always a plus.
cute. But it would be much nicer, IMHO, without the mambo coat ....
I've had this CD for a long time, like it, and never listen to it.
I can't stand David Byrne's singing.
Gringo. Byrne would love to be a badass gringo. But he ain't.

The music is great but Byrne's vocal style is horribly incompatible with it.
British people shouldn't be allowed to make any latin music. Seriously what was he thinking?
