The last time that I've seen her
The highway is still cold and wet and I can't forget
The way I had to leave her
And every passing day, she flickers and she fades
Is someone to catch her when she falls from the heavens?
And I'll love her yet, though she has done me wrong
And I'll bring her back, though she has been long gone
And I'll always be her
Broken hearted savior
And every heavy night
Takes out the little life that's left within her
Every man she gives her love, he takes it
And leaves her with a dinner
Our love was once a flame, now I'm just a forgotten name
Am I the only one to blame for ever loving her?
And I'll love her yet, though she has done me wrong
And I'll bring her back, though she has been long gone
And I'll always be her
Broken hearted savior
I love the snare… I love this band. I loved seeing them at a house party in 1988 in Boulder!
100% with you. In fact I may very well have been at the same party - I was there at that time too. In fact I had Todd in one on my classes too. Cheers!
Horrendous snare.
pretty heavy gate huh?
Extremely average track. 24/7/365 american radio filler.
Yeah could well be the sound they wanted, or could be the engie/producer just had a derpy moment. I myself don't care for it, and is why I only gave this one a '6'...
The producer for this album was David Z, who produced a lot of stuff in the 1980s into the '90s. He was a apparently a big fan of that gated reverb, "punchy" snare drum sound.
This was a minor hit back in the day. I never heard too much of it so it's still fun...
I'm not a drummer and therefore don't have a reference point for how the snare or the reverb applied to it "should" sound.
Song's a 10 for me.
Is it possible that's the sound they were going for? I'm blissfully ignorant of these particulars.

IMO this is often why many albums' drum sound is terrible, as in the 70s and the very anemic, dull, flat drums on dozens of otherwise great albums, which seemed to be the trend then. Bad micing of kits, overprocessing or the wrong kind, or simply very dry, muffled drum set-ups.
Listen to guys like Lenny White, John Bonham, or Danny Carey, and several of the jazz cats who often used a "wide open" sound - and their producers knew enough to record them that way and not process it to oblivion.
If you like this, I highly recommend their even more rocking bluesy stuff, such as the entire album of Stratagem, and Runaway Train off of Riviera — it's maybe their rowdiest growlin'est howlin'est best — and Caroline off of Beautiful World. THEN you will truly think that they are indeed way wicked cool, and Todd is some kind of genius; I am predicting that the obscure and intriguing lyrics in those cuts also will grab you...

Someone show these guys how to use a gate on their snare reverb properly.
This is simply unlistenable.

Not totally unlistenable IMO, but yeah, as a drummer I'd say kill that engineer/producer, get someone else.
Don't understand the hate for this band.
Me too. Must've been too busy raising kids through the early 90's. Got an mp3 from unknown source: Sister Sweetly (live) with a killer background vocal solo that raises goosebumps.
Thanks for the CD recommendations, coloradojohn.

This is June 2012 and that comment still applies.

Ah, dammit. Had I known that I would have gone to the BHT&M's show instead of Donna the Buffalo - why did they have to play on the same night?
They're all wrong. Acronyms were not widely used until the 20th Century and that word has been used for hundreds of years. Any claim that a word which was used before the late 19th Century has its origin in an acronym (e.g., golf, posh) is probably inaccurate. The word in question has Germanic origins.
The following is from the web site "Urban Legends:"
The Origin of the F-Word
Netlore Archive: In which we are told with a straight face that the word 'fuck' originated as the acronym of 'Fornication Under Consent of the King,' 'Fornication Under Command of the King,' 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge,' or some other variation thereof.
Description: Folk etymology
Circulating since: The 1960s
Status: False
Analysis: Having consulted the definitive reference work on this subject (yes, there is such a thing: The F-Word by Jesse Sheidlower, published by Random House in 1999), I feel confident in dismissing all the claims above as imaginative bunk.
The word fuck did not originate as an acronym. It crept, fully formed, into the English language from Dutch or Low German around the 15th century (it's impossible to say precisely when because so little documentary evidence exists, probably due to the fact that the word was so taboo throughout its early history that people were afraid to write it down). The American Heritage Dictionary says its first known occurrence in English literature was in the satirical poem "Flen, Flyss" (c.1500), where it was not only disguised as a Latin word but encrypted — gxddbov — which has been deciphered as fuccant, pseudo-Latin for "they fuck."According to Sheidlower, the earliest claims in print of supposed acronymic origins for the F-word appeared during the 1960s. An underground newspaper called the East Village Other published this version in 1967:
It's not commonly known that the word "fuck" originated as a medical diagnostic notation on the documests of soldiers in the British Imperial Army. When a soldier reported sick and was found to have V.D., the abbreviation F.U.C.K. was stamped on his documents. It was short for "Found Under Carnal Knowledge."
Two more variants appeared in a letter published in Playboy magazine in 1970:
My friend claims that the word fuck originated in the 15th Century, when a married couple needed permission from the king to procreate. Hence, Fornication Under Consent of the King. I maintain that it's an acronym of a law term used in the 1500s that referred to rape as Forced Unnatural Carnal Knowledge."
Undoubtedly the most famous use of this etymological travesty was as the title of the 1991 Van Halen album, "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge."
Y'know, I think "fucked up" is a relative term. Your "fucked up" might be far more tolerable than MY "fucked up." And my "fucked up" might be far more bearable than someone else's life. (And I just used the F-bomb four times in three sentences.) Where else but RP could we get away with this? And when will the Word-Police come winging in to ban this place because we use a word that has legitimate origins? (Not kidding - FUCK stands for "Fornication Under Consent of the King." I'm foggy on the research, but some deity or other wanted virgin wives, so he hired someone to "test" the virgins to make sure that they were, in fact, virgins. Hence, the F.U.C.K. )

You are right about the athorization of the king qoute. Back in the day when Knights where bold and there was no indoor plumbing the king had athoritation rule. If the King said it was OK to fornicate then you could do it with with out the sinful results of God frowning upon it. "The King Said it Was OK" was the cop-out. It all sounds petty dumb by todays standards but my research indicates that it is close to the truth. With all of this said, I really don't think it is such a bad word. S.H.I.T has a good story of origin but I will save that one for another time.

If you're serious about NOT being kidding, you might find it interesting to have a look on this: https://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=fuck&searchmode=none
Today though, it's striking quite a nerve.

Do you think the fact that we're listening to MP3 files makes a difference?
Despite awesome talent, Todd has embraced the independence of small lables, intimate venues, and live recordings. Though consciously not main stream he has repeatedly demonstrated the talent to write a "radio single" any time he pleases. He is highly regarded throughout the industry as a highly skilled and popular musician. I'll never forget the tour in the early 90's when The Dave Mathews Band was the opening act. We have no doubt BHTM could have taken a similar path, but his devoted fans are glad he hasn't.
Please, go see a show or check out "Live at Red Rocks" DVD before passing judgement.

Perhaps, but too country rockish for me. Just not my thing at all.

they go by BHTM ... i don't know why people want to belittle them - Strategem is one of my favorites
A time and a place and a girl. I remember them all well.
Me too -- 24.5 years later and still married. This song always makes me think of her and us.
