i want to go to a really groovy party in the past where they're playing this and dance.
Have your own really groovy party and dance, my friend..

The beginning of this tune is the jingle to a long running German radio program (WDR 2, Berichte von heute) summarizing the news and political commentaries of the day my parents used to hear daily. Since it was summarizing the day it ran pretty late (11:30pm). When I heard this jingle as a kid, it meant I was staying up late. Still associate that with this music. Great to hear that again here on RP!!!
Similar here. But the NDR didn't play it as late IIRC.

Still triggers these memories.
I'm not old enough either (born ca. '70),
when your YEAR of birth gets a 'ca.' in front of it, you know you've made the most of your life.
Cats are obligate carnivores. You shouldn't be giving them mushrooms.
Ever heard of cat grass? Yeah, they do that too.
Can't buy a thrill
Well, I've been up all night, baby
Leanin' on the windowsill…

I think it made my cat dance.., could just be the mushrooms though.
Made mine dance too and I don't even have a cat...
Maybe further down the comments there's talk about how this sounds like "Smoke on the Water" - which makes more sense to me than "Grapevine" - I'm not a big fan of this song so maybe I just now heard it for the first time....anyone else here that? about 1/2 into the tune....
Long Live RP!!
yes, a classic old spiritual, many renditions, I love them all. Check out Eva Cassidy's - sadly she is no longer with us, but a very talented artist, worthy of RP !
I'm not old enough either (born ca. '70), but I'm sure our high school jazz band must have played it! Our band director put himself through college play piano bars.
Oh, and since he wouldn't this tuba player double up on the bass part, I was the band's groupie! I humped amps and pianos all over the state, even getting out of school for contests!!!
Just for the record (no pun intended) this is a very old spiritual song that predates Grapevine by 60+ years. No surprise the melody found it's way into early 60's Motown music.

Well this Christian embraces what the agnostics and atheists apparently think about this song, based on the comments - it's awesome!
That sums it up for me, too.

Nicely said, fred!
Because both songs have only two chords in the the expository section, I-IV. I hear it, too. It's the extended repetition I think that elicits the comparison.
I have no idea.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Those who believe they have imaginary friends can be inspired by their delusions to make fine music. Fine by this atheist.

And on a Friday evening !
Why did you attend so many "high school jazz band competitions"?

Personally, I prefer this one, though it's not quite as on-topic for a music station.

Agree 100%

...I can just hear Dave Brubeck and Take 5 coming...
Thank goodness, I'm already a believer. Ramsey Lewis Trio is just beyond great. I'm doing that silly "desk-dance" that people do when they're at a computer - moving my shoulders, shifting in my seat as much as I can, feet tapping... I know I look like the world's biggest dork, but with this music, I don't even give a whooping funt.
Never heard this before but the bananas just had to move when they heard it. Couldn't stop 'em.
A very good rip.
Ramsey should have some royalty !

What's your hurry? Here's your hat.

Wow. That must have been some show. Pretty sure there's a lot of mutual admiration between Lewis and Brubeck, a couple of pros.
