Love this. Saw her in Geneva a number of years back, bloody awesome, what a talent!!
The number of comments by folks bent out of shape over the song title is mildly discouraging. This song is gorgeous, please talk more about that.

Surely you jest!  If I were to "create" a song that disparages gays, Christians, you name it, I would be de-yarbled in the court of public opinion, and depending on how disparaging the lyrics are, I imagine I could also be arrested for "hate speech", all because I've awakened someone's political views which influences how they perceive, recollect and feel about my song.

The song has a nice musical vibe. As for the other emo stuff, count me out. I have a ton of gay friends, we never ever need to discuss this kind of shit. In fairness, I don't think any of them have lesbian moms. Even if they did, I wouldn't have support for this title. The music is redeeming, but that stupid name just brings shame on the whole thing. And what gay sons have issues with their lesbian mothers, that seems HIGHLY unlikely! It seems more like a big love fest with an issues session during drinks.

She may know more about your topic than you think, since she's an actual lesbian. Maybe her "gay friends" would disagree with you about what actual gay people talk to other actual gay people about, or what song titles they would "support".

Big Kaki fan here ever since I discovered it was her and not Michael Hedges who did Hedge's song, Ritual Dance in one of my favorite movies, August Rush. Anybody who can fool me into thinking they are Michael Hedges gets a two big thumbs up in my book. Would love to hear more of her stuff.

Love the guitar sound.
Sounds like a big Aphex Twin rip off. This kind of sound was around 20 years ago.

The title reminds me of an action group we had at university in the eighties: land rights for gay whales
Beautiful song.
We sit here in Germany, have our home made pizza and celebrate the vibe of this song.
Excellent!

I agree. And I'm not getting a connection between the title and the tune, which I think I should be, considering the definitively social commentary nature of the title of the piece.
Perks my ears right up. Thanks @RP.

Seconded - both parts.
Who care about sexual preferences-?  Why not simply go out and be the very best one can-?  The whole gay thing clouds the conversation and distracts from those who are either really good or bad... It's just a warm blanket to hide the mediocre.

Get on with the music. Be good. Be bad. Sleep with whoever you want.  I'm over the gay/straight crap. Play and be good.

Gay and lesbian are the same thing right? Almost everybody would like gay people to be accepted as much as hetero-sexuals. Then why bring it up so often. You don't hear people say the word hetero-sexual all the time, but the word gay is so over-used. Nowadays it's like, hey look at me, i'm GAY! Yah.... So what?! Enough already...

But like i said, the song is good!! 7

As we are all just organisms in a petri dish, it is not a "PRIVILEGE" but just the way natural selection works; Fall on the outside of what is able to survive on it's own as an organism, and your dead.  If there is any explaining to do I would say it is the gays and lesbians.
While I don't require them to do so, I think they make themselves feel better if they do champion their sexuality.  I believe they know that left to their own, their particular strain is a dead end; that would get to me also. {#Curtain}

Yes, that's exactly right. Fripp, especially. I give this one an 8 (up from a 7 months ago).
I saw Kaki last night.  Amazing guitarist.  Her voice seems to get lost (intentionally?) in the music but the venue contributes to that.  But not a problem for me - her solo pieces were worth the price of admission.
Unique tune, very cool. You have to check out the YouTube video of this song to get a real appreciation for it.  OK, yeah, then there's the title...

Saw her at a recent show. I honestly had no idea that she is a phenomenal guitarist. With a few more years under her belt she could give David Lindley and Ry Cooder a run for their money.

You have to love live radio...  the mess with the dogs and the people in the background on the listener support segment gave RP just another touch of humanity and brought it down to earth a little.

Thanks for being real, Bill.

On a side note, I'm sure that this is Sen. Larry Graig's favorite song.

Woof, woof!

Kaki King - "Goby" Live-Acoustic

"I think shes great i think she knows the guitar very well"

"imho - Ovation has no all those variety of subtle tones of traditional acoustic guitar. It's good for pop/electric music - not for complex fingerstyle music like that. Traditional sound of acoustic guitar is rich. Ovation sound is flat. "

Hey a picture's worth a thousand words, innit?

It was cool. She's a lot more interesting to watch than to just listen to, I think, altho a guitarist could probably hear what she's doing well enough to be impressed without needing to see her fingers. Did that make sense? No.

If you're ever scanning the entertainment pages and see "Kaki King, solo at the Dive Bar Downtown" GO! This is one of those things that I think work a lot better in a small room, but it was still nice. About Noon on Saturday, in Jackson Hole... hard to beat that.

Medeski Martin & Wood came on after her, and she did about a 20 minute jam with them. I thought it sucked. At first I didn't see her over there (I was staring at the sun and sipping a gin & tonic) but I thought the sound got really un-funky so I thought "ah the free jazz portion of the show" but after a while I looked down and saw her there and she said "thanks a lot!" and walked off the stage and MM&W went back to their set and it got better immediately. So hey.

Anyhoo. Awesome guitarist, it seems like they're trying to make her into a marketable band with pop songs etc and she was uncomfortable doing those, but let her just go off and it was impressive.

Luv it...

The whole point of this forum is to comment on the music and the name of a piece is certainly part of it, right? I think it is a perfectly legitimate question and agree with the original poster that this is a third-grade, look how cute I am, song title. Makes me think less of Ms. King. riffster wrote:

I disagree slightly... I bought the album after enjoying the cuts from RP, but the majority of the rest of the album feels more ambient. This track is definitely my favorite on the album. If you enjoy Kaki for her guitar skills, check out her first album. This one earns a 9 for making me turn it up every time.

That may be a valid comment, but it's very difficult to determine the reason an artist names an instrumental composition. It may just be part of the moment when she was feeling gay sons of lesbian mothers that the chords came to be. I can't imagine she would name the composition so just to be controversial...or maybe you're right and she's an idiot!
