Fat man lookin' in a blade of steel
Thin man lookin' at his last meal
Hollow man lookin' in a cottonfield
For dignity

Wise man lookin' in a blade of grass
Young man lookin' in the shadows that pass
Poor man lookin' through painted glass
For dignity

Somebody got murdered on New Year's Eve
Somebody said dignity was the first to leave
I went into the city, went into the town
Went into the land of the midnight sun

Searchin' high, searchin' low
Searchin' everywhere I know
Askin' the cops wherever I go
Have you seen dignity?

Blind man breakin' out of a trance
Puts both his hands in the pockets of chance
Hopin' to find one circumstance
Of dignity

I went to the wedding of Mary-Lou
She said "Don't want nobody see me talkin' to you"
Said she could get killed if she told me what she knew
About dignity

I went down where the vultures feed
I would've got deeper, but there wasn't any need
Heard the tongues of angels and the tongues of men
Wasn't any difference to me

Chilly wind sharp as a razor blade
House on fire, debts unpaid
Gonna stand at the window, gonna ask the maid
Have you seen dignity?

Drinkin' man listens to the voice he hears
In a crowded room full of covered up mirrors
Lookin' into the lost forgotten years
For dignity

Met Prince Phillip at the home of the blues
Said he'd give me information if his name wasn't used
He wanted money up front, said he was abused
By dignity

Footprints runnin' cross the sliver sand
Steps goin' down into tattoo land
I met the sons of darkness and the sons of light
In the border towns of despair

Got no place to fade, got no coat
I'm on the rollin' river in a jerkin' boat
Tryin' to read a note somebody wrote
About dignity

Sick man lookin' for the doctor's cure
Lookin' at his hands for the lines that were
And into every masterpiece of literature
For dignity

Englishman stranded in the blackheart wind
Combin' his hair back, his future looks thin
Bites the bullet and he looks within
For dignity

Someone showed me a picture and I just laughed
Dignity never been photographed
I went into the red, went into the black
Into the valley of dry bone dreams

So many roads, so much at stake
So many dead ends, I'm at the edge of the lake
Sometimes I wonder what it's gonna take
To find dignity

Dylan "unplugged" is a pretty solid effort, this one rolls along nicely, 8 it is for "My Favorites"; Long Live RP!!

No, not the "sole" criteria, but one criterion among many, and one that apparently detracts from the musical experience -- quite a bit for some people. I've always thought the perennial apology that he's not trying to sing well was kind of contrived. You could justify a lot of cacophony under that excuse (the keening of that Gotye song comes to mind). And who are these mindreaders who happen to know from song to song whether or not Bob is trying to sing well? Does it matter? It seems to come out the same way regardless of his intentions. That being said, there's nothing wrong with being merely a great lyricist.

Ah, Bobby! Bob did some great shows this year... saw him here in Seattle with Merle Haggard. They both still got life in 'em! and very entertaining!
I couldn't disagree more. Bob co-headlined a show in town with Elvis Costello. Elvis was fantastic, Bob sounded like he should have thrown in the towel a few decades ago. It wasn't just not good compared to Blonde on Blonde or Highway 61 or something like that... it was just plain BAD. Too bad for a once great artist.

Solas does a great cover of this -- RP has it too.
Yes, indeed they do!

Yep - I would given this 2 more points if it wasn'T for Mr. Sinusitis' voice...

How much would my February contribution have to be in order to have a twenty-four hour block of Dylan?
Probably more than it would cost to buy all of his CDs.

This is just flippin great...
This is one of Bob's personal favorites according to Chronicles. From the Oh Mercy sessions. I agree, it's solid baby.
Props for Mr. Dylan, he's been there, seen it, and at last report, done that! An 8.

Agreed... suprising he can still make a tune... but at the same time.. the same problem as many of his songs.. some times the words are so slurred you can't recognize them..
Did not know that enunciation was that important in rock?!?! Seems to me I remember numerous debates among friends as to the exact words that were being sung on many a song, by many artists (before someone went and found the lyrics -- not as easy back then, pre-internet).
Gotta love "The Bob"

Hey! I'm glad I am not the only one who does not 'do' lyrics so can't stand pretentious Bob..........
TO55ER!!
I need to "come around" to ole Bob.but singin about anything you want to in america is good in my opinion.
This is just flippin great: Someone got killed New Years Eve; Dignity was the first to leave.

Well said!
No one writes a story like this guy. I can\'t get past his voice but again, what a writer.
Oh yeah. This is crap. But that\'s par for the course for Dylan.
What is he saying?

Actually, that's mostly meaningless. You would be hard pressed to find a song with more than 25 ratings that's not 1/10. The low/high numbers are meaningless. I'd rather see, perhaps, a bar graph showing the spread of votes.
Oh I missed hearing this..play it again! Please!

Boy is that true! I've tried and tried to enjoy Mr. Dylan, and I just can't get past that stuffed-nose, smoky voice. To each his own.

Dignity was the biggest surprise and a highlight on the Bob Dylan Unplugged (irony) album, I think. After doing some of his old songs, Dylan showed he could still sound meaningful and at the same time contemporary, if he wanted to.
Sha-weet!
Like the band, but as always, I really wish Bob would hire a new lead singer. That said, the music is so good on this, I\'m almost tempted to buy the record.
