The events of the past 2-3 days in our country have had a major impact on me, as I'm sure it has for many of you. I've not seen anything thing with the scope & impact like this since 9/11, and I'm doing a lot of processing. I've expressed a lot of my anger and dismay about the state of our union here in the political threads, which is never where I present my best self.
I'm offering amends to my good friends here, other RPeeps who cruise these threads, and also to my adversaries. This is not the person I strive to be IRL or here. I've allowed my passion spill into my contributions here in a way that is not healthy for my spirituality and serenity, and it's not contributed anything positive to the RP community that I've been a part of for 15+ years. I've been harsh and judgmental, and have said things about and to other RPeeps that I would have been better served to have kept out of the Forum. I especially offer amends to Bill & Rebecca for the bad vibes I've put out to this little piece of Paradise in the world.
My amends is this: I recognize & take ownership of my words and behaviors in this Forum and I am committing to not exhibiting those behaviors ever again. I'll see you in the music threads, the goofy threads, and wherever I can bring my positive self.
/thanks
A reasonably wise RPer once told me to think about ghosting several members who were just desperate for attention & who lived to make the Forum miserable. It's hard and I fail frequently, but I feel better trying. He was a smart and well intentioned dude, I'll see if I can put you in touch with him.

Empty shelves do not mean everyone is hoarding. Think about the thousands of families — Mom, Dad, kids & extended members — are lockdown at home. Whereas school and work cafeterias often fed the family roughly 1/3 - 1/4 of its meals during the week, staying in means there had better be food there: family take-out gets expensive. Many elderly and vulnerable ones want to stock up to REDUCE visits to the grocery store. Babies need diapers and formula. Teenage boys have Godzilla appetites. My neighbor has 5 boys ... when feeling other customers' eyes on her cart, felt compelled to explain she shops like this ALL the time. Not everything is about personal selfishness; this is also preparedness.
As a prepper no one knows this better than I. The whole point of prepping is so you do not have to rush out and buy certain items exclusively taking away valuable resources from others. I understand the anecdotes that you have given, but that is not the main reason the shelves are bare. I am sure you have heard the horror stories of many elders in particular sadly gazing upon empty shelves. From what I have observed especially with the great toilet paper rush was mostly younger people filling up their buggies with many 30 roll cases and the shelves being emptied in the first hours of the panic. Finally the groceries stores have wised up and imposed limits of 3 for the items that people are yes, hoarding to give others who have more difficulty getting to the stores mostly elders an opportunity to not go home empty handed which could be life or death. They are also starting to make the first hour of opening each day over 60 only to give them a fighting chance.
When all of this is over, there will be many who will have this experience indelibly stamped in their consciousness and prepping will become mainstream and this will make future crisis much more manageable.
Maybe. Being an "elder" who is experiencing this stuff in real time, just reading the bolded made me think back to the days of the oil embargo and gas rationing in the 70's. Back then there was much talk about rationing of things during WW II and all the things people were doing trying to cheat during the gas rationing. Yep, the smoke of WW II lasted in the air for a very long time, as hard as that may seem to comprehend at this day in time far removed from then.
This is sorta reminiscent of the rationing days regarding some current public behaviour. We have long since forgotten the hardships of the gas rationing days and these current ones will also fade away very shortly once our current predicament is resolved. The public, now more than ever, is extremely self centered and emotional and is ever more easily managed into a frenzy of one panic after another over you "fill in the blank". There are those that are pushing to keep this froth whipped up and volatile to further their own ends.
How soon before "get out of my way old man" is heard openly remains to be seen. I'm not that optimistic right now. Won't be much longer to find out as all the instant gratification generationS with their expectations really get frustrated with the simplest of difficulties and challenges and really get scared.
That there are some people who think that these are the most difficult times we have ever faced makes me want to puke.

I have to say that I have basically been living in this social distancing hunkerdown position for the past decade being officially in poverty and dealing with cancer. My life is basically unchanged since the Pandemic started. I've always had surgical masks and nitrile gloves around the house. I wear the gloves when I pump gas. What has changed is that the things that I buy in bulk ordinarily are out of stock as my normal replacement time has arrived. I buy distilled water by the case, 6 at a time and now I can't even get a gallon jug. What changed with all the water all of a sudden ? The tap still works and Lake Erie is 25 miles away as the crow flies.
Living like this sucks and can be challenging at best. Patience and perseverance are required and a belief that you will always land on your feet until you don't is of big help. I'll try and stay calm so other people see calm and be calm themselves. I have enough xanax for a year (i fill the script whether I need it or not) and enough oil for a few months at least. That should help a little. A six month supply of ventolin, advair and symbicort for both of us on the shelf.
I am praying for us all and hope we get through this and believe we will. Again this will seem like a bad dream shortly. Getting to the other side will be very hard but once you've started the journey, there is no turning back, just go forward.
Be the Frog. A frog can go neither sideways or backwards. Only forward.
Yeah, one big change. The Goodwill Store is closed and the wife is cut off from her book supply which she really needs to help get through her grieving.

Just watched that a couple of weeks ago. Don't make em like this anymore ... :(
There's no way that movie could be made today. No. Way. Which is a shame, because it has a lot of 'teachable moments' in it.
Except for The Waco Kid and Mongo (and they get their fair share), the white folks are portrayed as idiots, morons, racists, drunks, skunks, bohunks, and "mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, ass-kickers, sh*t-kickers and Methodists!"
My favorite line is when Cleavon Little is facing the guns of the town (for the first time). Puts his own gun to his own neck, and says "Don't shoot, or the n***** gets it!" (not bleeped in the movie)
There could be a whole college-level class about the movie. Seriously. c.
