I feel very fortunate to have seen these folks perform live several times. Among a couple thousand shows over a lifetime of chasing this stuff down, those shows really stand out. Throwing Muses were amazing.

Actually, Pixies' "Wave of Mutilation" came out in 1989 (on the classic album Doolittle). But these two (New England based) bands came up at around the same time, and wow did I listen to a lot of both of them in high school! I met them that year too, and Kristen Hersh is incredibly nice.

There was a band in Boulder in the mid-80s called Electric Third Rail; the lead singer was a mercurial gal named George, and they sounded a lot like this. Well, usually a bit more rocking, but this made me remember seeing them in the hippest places all over town...

Nothing the muses ever did was as good as their first album but that was VERY good. Still can't help upping the volume whenever this floats by on RP. Never specifically noticed it when I bought and listened to the album back then though..

Amazing band with several quite impressive albums - this is one of them.  If you like this track you will like the album for sure.  Also worth getting is "University" - another great one.  Oh yeah and "House Tornado" too, and....

For lack of a better explanation this song is just too out of it for me to really enjoy it. I much prefer the song "Counting Backwards" off this album, which is way more upbeat and nothing like this. In fact, many years ago I had this sampler tape of new artists from Elektra(?). It had a wide variety of bands, but Throwing Muses still stands out in my mind. There were a couple other really good artists on there... ah, memory lane.

I dont think its even valid to compare CJ to Throwing Muses. They are each incredible performers in their own musical genres. Just because the Muses wrote a song that sounds vaguely like a CJ song doesn't mean they're suddenly trying to break into the same type of music.
