Love was a promise made of smoke
In a frozen copse of trees
A bone cold and older than our bodies
Slowly floating in the sea

Every morning there were planes
The shiny blades of pagan angels in our father's sky
Every evening I would watch her hold the pillow
Tight against her hollows, her unholy child

I was still a beggar shaking out my stolen coat
Among the angry cemetery leaves
When they caught the king beneath the borrowed car
Righteous, drunk, and fumbling for the royal keys

Love was our father's flag and sewn like a shank
In a cake on our leather boots
A beautiful feather floating down
To where the birds had shit our empty chapel pews

Every morning we found one more machine
To mock our ever-waning patience at the well
Every evening she'd descend the mountain, stealing socks
And singing something good where all their horses fell

Like a snake within the wilted garden wall
I'd hint to her every possibility
While with his gun, the pagan angel rose to say
"My love is one made to break every bended knee"

funny, didn't think much about Jack Johnson until seeing him live - what a great, fun show. some folks translate much better in person, some recorded. or is it my mood on any given day? so many factors in play...today the lyrics speak to me, another day I might rate it less. music has this power

Someone heard your cursing: where's David Caruso now?

He also looks like Joe from The Idles, but with more hair.
I'm sure I've commented on this below but it's been a while so I will say my wife gave me this CD for Christmas a decade or so ago thanks to RP and I still love it.
i keep hearing GD

Love the album cover art. Reminds me a bit of one of my old art school instructors, Marshall Arisman.
You got me wrong Gov, I din't steal no stinkin socks.

As for your comment, if Sam raised his voice, I think it would take away from the sound.

Yep!

I'm sick of standsard D-A-G chord progressions- I like Ragas!!
Excellent start of a superb album!
"Now as a promise made of smoke, a frozen coke our dreams" - wtf? Where are my ear drops?

A bit of an auto-rate, this one, as it's typical of Iron & Wine's output. A nailed-on Ho-Hum from the Nottingham jury. This song could be usefully employed by hypnotists to put subjects under...{#Sleep}
Why am I boogying through the house to this song? (Wow, I have HIPS!)  Love it...{#Dancingbanana}
Delightful :)
sounds about 40 years old

It's taken me a while to appreciate this group, but I like them more and more.

I agree. Some people sound best when they belt it out, and some sound best soft. It's just the nature of his music and the feel that he's going for. Take it or leave it. I, for one, will take it. Try track 4, "Carousel".

Worked for JJ Cale
Nice!

And again...
Please stop beating this song into the ground.

Yes, it could be worse... but with a simple quieting of some oft-repeated songs, it could be a LOT better.

Indeed Or John Mayerama.

Saw I&W Sat night in Florida. He played with Califone and did a very electric set--I think they had 9 players in total. Could be Sam is moving into a more complicated sound in terms of instrumentation and production.

I'm not a big Iron & Wine fan, but I love the instrumentation of this song. It really elevates the relatively monotone character into something unique and fun.

Seconded! I purchased this album entirely because of hearing it on RP -- are you hearing that, royalty police?

like this very much. plus, I'm a dog person, so snaps for the album cover as well!
I'm likin' the beat... keeps me movin'...
I don't understand, how you can be ambivalent about much of I&W if you like this song? This is exactly what most of their work sounds like. Just asking. lmic wrote:

saw them again for my 'birthday show' this year...wayy good. the percussion on this album adds a whole new style/element to their music that adds to the likability of them for me. great show, see them if you can
Just broke down and bought this last night. I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into the other tracks. Great stuff so far.
I like Iron and Wine a lot and it's because of songs like this. Perfection.
out of sight.

Was it a band concert or just Sam Beam playing alone with an an additional background singer?

The word that comes to mind is "pretty" - regardless of the lyrical content. I enjoy this, yes.

Is the whole CD good, RP cuts are most excellent?
Most excellent
Sam's music just keeps getting richer and richer with each listen. What an artist. Albeit, this one has quite a bit more production than the early stuff, but it's still delicious. Even more so. Most Excellent. More, please!

Isn't that the truth?! Thanks to this joint I've discovered all sorts of great musicians that mainstream radio will never play because they don't feel it's "appropriate" for us. (Geez don't I sound like a commercial, d'oh!)

I think someone said on one of the other comments for the album that Sam did it himself.
About an hour or so ago Bill played Starship's "Have you seen the starts tonite" - very similar vibe here - very nice...

...sam beam's really come into his own on this album - i think he grew a lot, musically, after his collaboration with calexico...
Is Iron and Wine still just the one guy? I agree on the cover. Freaky.
This new album is superb. A different sound to their other stuff but i'm loving this album already and i've only heard it twice. Playing in a lovely little chirch here in Brighton on the 2nd November, hopefully i will get a ticket.

Behold the horror of following Fogerty and CCR with Iron and Whisper...
Love that guitar ... good licks on the old axe

There's a certain "samey-ness" to their stuff but I always give them high marks for their great melodies.
