Load the car and write the note
Grab your bag and grab your coat
Tell the ones that need to know
We are headed north

One foot in and one foot back
But it don't pay to live like that
So I cut the ties and I jumped the tracks
For never to return

Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake, my head it spins
Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in

When at first I learned to speak
I used all my words to fight
With him and her and you and me
Oh, but it's just a waste of time
Yeah, it's such a waste of time

That woman, she's got eyes that shine
Like a pair of stolen polished dimes
She asked to dance, I said it's fine
I'll see you in the morning time

Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake, my head it spins
Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in

Three words that became hard to say
I and love and you
What you were then, I am today
Look at the things I do

Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake, my head it spins
Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in

Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake, my head it spins (spins)
Ah Brooklyn, Brooklyn take me in

Dumbed down and numbed by time and age
Your dreams to catch the world, the cage
The highway sets the traveler's stage
All exits look the same

Three words that became hard to say
I and love and you
I and love and you
I and love and you

The most engaging band I've ever had the privilege to see (and I've experienced this privilege more than a dozen times), I recently took a friend to her first TAB show in Asheville, NC where she exclaimed, "I've never heard an audience sing along THIS much - and the band DIGS it!". I recorded Seth Avett on one occasion commenting to the crowd abouth the back and forth at their shows and how as an artist, it is joy bringing. Then we all shared a back and forth of LaLaLa's and headed right in to Go To Sleep. Great shows are unforgettable and what makes live music the BEST!

They put on an awesome show.  Seen them 3x, all fantastic.

i feel the same. i think we're in the minority.

Me and my girlfriend went to see the Avett Brothers in Paradiso Amsterdam last august.

A truly wonderfull and most excellent show but somehow a "Dave Grohl/Foo Fighters" moment snuck in there. Some guy in the audience picked a fight with another guy and they started to brawl so Scott stopped the band for a moment and politely asked what was going on and why those guys were fighting (unlike Dave Grohl who threw the word f#ck and motherf#cker in there a bunch of times). So after things cooled down a bit, they continued where they left off, which was this song and as if it was all part of the show, the lines "I used all my words to fight" .... "oh but it's such a waste of time" followed seconds after the event. That obviously made the audience applaud the way the Avett Brothers solved this situation.

Sadly enough some people think it's no problem to disturb a great show for something as stupid as fighting, on the other hand, it's great when a band feels so connected to the audience and acts on situations like that. It makes it much more intimate that way... An unforgettable night it was, the useless fight aside...

Thank you so much for sharing. I've had the honor of visiting Paradiso Amsterdam a few time and can easily imagine how amazing this event must have been, especially after that interuption.
Just beautiful, has the qualities of older songs... Easy 9 from this brother
Glad this is back in rotation.  Eight years is much too long.  Do share more of their music, a lot more, in fact!
Very light on good lyrics and lighter still on sound. Too thin, basic and unconvincing for my taste. Sorry but it's a NO from me.

Why? Queens wouldn't take you?

Would you really rather go to Queens?  Of course, I wasn't impressed by any of the five Burroughs.  Not impressed with NYC area at all actually.  Maybe it was the traffic, the people, or the fact that I'm not a "city" kinda guy.  I spent all my time behind the wheel with one hand on the wheel, another on the gear shifter, and another one out the sunroof with everyone's favorite finger in the air.

Of course, the authentic Italian pizza that was baked and sold by authentic Mexicans (who didn't speak English at all, good thing the girl I was with spoke spanish) was very good.

I agree, and it still rates a 9 for me.
Can't believe the last post is from August.  Such a great song, such a great band.
Love this. Saw them at Hardly Strictly last year, they jump around like monkeys on a hot rock.

methinks you would need to toss in a little grunge, bluegrass and folk too...saw the show at the fox last week.  they rocked the house.  almost worth staying up 'til 1:30 on a work night...

Why did it take so long to play this song again?  Great!

You sure wouldn't know it from this song.
So, so good.

Brooklyn, Brooklyn, take me in...

Three words that became hard to say
"I" and "love" and "you"

Heartbreaking ... and yet beautiful.
I don't know why, but I don't like these guys. I admit it, I have no good reason. I just don't. Something about their music strikes me as contrived.

Brooklyn Decker.   There.
Sweet dreams, good sl..{#Sleep}

This song is awesome live. The whole show was great, though a bit more screaming than I expected for a bluegrass/alt-rock band. Still, quite a show.
Thanks Bill -just reminded me that this was on my list of LPs to get.  Loving the Rubin effect of space and simplicity, but with great dynamics, that this recording offers over previous Avett releases.

Snoozeville. Come on, Bill, I need something to get me GOING during the workday! Hate the stretches of slow, moody, "introspective" stuff...at least 9 to 5 M-F.

The operative word here is Hate.  Try not doing that.

Catch them on Austin City Limits if you can.  It's a great show.

Then by all means go explore their back catalogue. Much to enjoy there.
Alas, poor Avett! I knew him...

My opinion of the CD artwork.

I do like the song.

I love it when a song's lyrics seem to come from our own very lives and experiences like this gem from The Avett Brothers.

A teacher that I work with just gave me this cd this morning. I'm totally loving it.

Yes Brooklyn, take them in, maybe they'll go then!  Quickly.

Purchased via RP itunes link after enjoying hearing the tracks from these guys here. I enjoy the whole album.
Truly beautiful song. I recently purchased the album and there are several more gems like this on it.

{#Good-vibes}
Ah Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in

My hands they shake my head it spins

Great song, the singer's voice reminds me of Jon Lajoie.

These guys are local and one of them studied music under a friend of mine - my friend says they are all nice folks who take their music seriously. The local press has been very kind to them and apparently they are doing well nationally. So, good luck to them. But I just don't get it . . .

However, not a hater, so no score from me. I'm voting "present" on this one.

It pains me to know that you have had and will have so many opportunities to see them... but haven't. You are cheating yourself.

Beautiful.

A long ways from their best stuff but still pretty cool.

I'm a sucker for this schmaltzy stuff
My rating went up two points over the course of the song.  It kinda grows on you.
great song...
Barf. The Band meets Jack Johnson.

RP plays an Avett Brothers tune I haven't heard until now. I love when that happens.
