Brother's smile
Taking on its own
Identity
Only to then leave it behind

Foreign light in the afternoon

Held by what-be-nots
Stay until remembered
Here I'm standing
Ripped apart by albatross
Hanging by a thread

What's in a name?
What's in a name?

Down on the other side
I'm almost out of sight
Looking up to let go
Now I'm letting go
Now I'm letting go
Now I'm letting go

Let it go (Let him go)
Let it go (Let him go)
Let it go (Let him go)
Let it go (Let him go)

was wondering if i heard echo and the bmen "Cutter" in the chorus, then "Lips Like Sugar" follows it. am i on to something?

No! I've always been reminded of Cutter when hearing the SVE track too...and now enjoying Lips Like Sugar afterwards 😁
This has become one of those songs that on hearing the opening chords I can feel my blood pressure drop.   That and the message that I need to 'let go'... solid 10.

Okay, so I thought I liked SVE, and I saw this cover art and was like "What the actual F-CK?"

[for those blissfully unaware, that is the image of Pepe the Frog, the darling meme of alt-right trolls - the Anti-Defamation League includes Pepe in its database of hate symbols]

Turns out (as the cover notes), Sharon wrote this song for the film Feels Good Man, which chronicles the far-too-late attempts of Matt Furie (Pepe's creator) to reclaim his creation from its status as hate group mascot.

While that association with Pepe may not be global, it is pretty well entrenched here in the USA - not unlike how swastikas, still associated primarly with Buddhism in some East Asian countries, will forever be irredeemable in the West.

And with respect to that, I was relieved to learn that I would agree with Sharon in urging Mr. Furie to "Let go"!

Thanks for your comment
Drums remind me of Just Like Honey by The Jesus and Mary Chain
It's a nice song -- but should Cindi Lauper or  the publisher of her song be annoyed?  I mean, if a girl group shook down George Harrison for My Sweet Lord, is a sample that seems even more direct grounds for a letter from a lawyer? Or would Cindi not care? I think the last, Cindi seems kinda chill.

Yes absolutely, but with a female voice
An absolutely amazing song, performed by a talent who is channeling all her passion with the force of the emotion!

Yes!  In fact I just scanned the lyric to see if it was anything related.  I definitely heard the same melody line in the part about the albatross.

Sharon van Etten is a gem. I got introduced to her on 2010, and it's been a wonderful, if not always comfortable journey.

I wonder why she chose to plaster her album cover with a repetitive arrangement of distorted "Pepe" frogs...

That's not an album cover; this song was released as a "single".  It was originally recorded for a documentary about Matt Furie - the creator of the Pepe The Frog meme.

What a great song from Maid. Loved the series and love SVE even more. Lovely song.
Particularly fond of the intro/beginning where the instrumentation does a fantastic job of establishing the great atmosphere of the song.   A solid song overall imo.
Sometimes I wish I could give the transition a rating as well as the songs!  The move from Svefn g-englar into this was a perfect 10

Her wiki-bio made me appreciate the song more.

Now I want an emoji of that purple lipped, wild-eyed face on the cover.
post Covid 19 music. Like her !
Heard this a couple times now, my rating keeps climbing.  7 -> 8
Thanks for the new music.  A fine addition.
I think this is the first time I've ever heard SvE on here - she has some real gems in her catalogue - the more from her the merrier! 🙂
