We bid our friends goodbye
We promised we would write them
And headed north up 95
Into the great unknown
We turned up our stereo
And felt so reckless and alive
We didn't know who we would be
We didn't know where we would end up
When we headed down that road
A little food and our guitars
In the backseat and that old cello
The one that would get stolen
In a town in Idaho

And it's a long way to Michigan and back
And it's a long way
Cause it's a long way, the clouds upon our backs
And it's a long, long, long, long way

And I have never seen
Reflections of the cleanest
Of blue as the Minnesota lakes
Those were the longest nights
Of wood smoke and Northern Lights
As we talked until the morning came
The light of glowing embers
As sweet as I remember
Among the rustling of the trees
The legend of the harvest moon
And sweet ballad of the loon
I felt as ancient as I was meant to be

And it's a long way to Washington and back
And it's a long way
Cause it's a long way, the clouds upon our backs
And it's a long, long, long, long way

I called you from a payphone
In windy, cold Missoula
And then from Midland in the rain
A place as proud and sad as
The South Dakota badlands
It touched me more than I could explain
The dirt poor reservation
Where the Oglala nation
Tries to hang on to its ways
Feather and Peyote pipe and
A six pack of Miller Light
Sits on the dashboard of a beat up Chevrolet

And it's a long way to Tennessee and back
And it's a long way
Cause it's a long way on the worn out heels of Kerouac
And it's a long, long, long, long way

Out in California
We touched the other ocean
And I still have that jar of sand
In the Arizona desert
The sky goes on forever
You've never seen a thing as grand
And North Montana was cold
She keeps her secrets frozen
Under glaciers way up north
And people have got lost up there
In the home of the grizzly bear
And you can ask the mountain
But the mountain doesn't care

And it's a long way to Delaware and back
And it's a long way
Cause it's a long way, the clouds up on our backs
And it's a long, long, long, long way
Cause it's a long way on the worn out heels of Kerouac
And it's a long, long, long, long way

I'd love to hear a collaboration between Antje and Dar Williams

Antje got to open for her at a gig right before the pandemic (she's an enormous fan of Dar's and was really excited to work with her).  I don't know if they've sang together but Antje did a glorious cover of "The Light and the Sea" with Richard Shindell (this is a big favorite of mine!)
This is why RP is so great.  Heard Ragdoll Princes and Junkyard Queens on RP a few years back and thought it was a great song and loved the vocals.  Antje happened to be doing a show nearby and she blew me away.  Been a big fan ever since.  Got to meet her after a gig and she couldn't have been nicer.  She was really sweet to my kids too.  None of this would've happened if I hadn't of heard her on RP!  Thanks so much!!

I knew she reminded me of someone, but i couldn't think who. You nailed it!

A great road trip song, done with a relaxing, pure voice.

Blech!

This is the second song i heard of Antje's album, it sounds great, i'll have to look it up!

Without Loreena McKennitt, independent woman singer-songwriters would have no better publication prospects than they had in the 1970s.  Loreena's impact on the business was far greater than just her artistic contribution.  She's quite humble about it.

Why am I hearing more and more country-tinged stuff here? I think there's an infestation, please Bill, call an exterminator quick.

To call this fine song 'crap' is an overreaction.

Saw Antje and Richard Shindell last weekend in Boston. Fabulous! Keep them coming. Thanks.
Love it!!!   {#Motor}

Richard Shindell? Or John Gorka, who is also credited with harmonies. She also tours with Ellis Paul. So she's pretty connected, it seems! {#Group-hug}

I used to stream a quasi public radio station out of the Philly area - WXPN.

Enjoyed it most times - great countdowns of 885 songs, albums and artists - they are 88.5 on the FM dial.

Anyway - I stopped listening when they started overweighted the folksy female (yes I'm sorry) singer songwriter genre to be 35 -40% of the playlist.

I can take it in RP level doses which are probably 10-15% depending on who you include (Neko Case? Loreena McKennitt, definitely this)

not my fave type of music - I give it a 4 for execution

That's where I go when I'm not here.  Used to live close enough to catch it on the FM dial and was a supporting member for years.  They've definitely gone much more commercial in the past few years, but I suppose they've had to in order to survive.

"We felt so reckless and alive."
Lovely song. She has a very relaxed, yet expressive vocal quality. Very nice harmonica as well.
Here's a youtube clip of Antje singing this song and she also tells a funny story about a road trip.

Absolutely no comparison to Stevie Nicks, whatsoever .... Antje's voice soars, SN's voice is awful.

Is that John Gorka in the background?

I gotta get ahold of this disc.
Love the harmonica bits...  OK, I'll go up to 7.  :-)

Female James Taylor? {#Think}
Has a James Taylor feel to it.

Townspeople:
Oh, there's nothing halfway
About the Iowa way to treat you,
When we treat you
Which we may not do at all.
There's an Iowa kind of special
Chip-on-the-shoulder attitude.
We've never been without.
That we recall.
We can be cold
As our falling thermometers in December
If you ask about our weather in July.
And we're so by God stubborn
We could stand touchin' noses
For a week at a time
And never see eye-to-eye.
But what the heck, you're welcome,
Join us at the picnic.
You can eat your fill
Of all the food you bring yourself.
You really ought to give Iowa a try.
Provided you are contrary,
We can be cold
As our falling thermometer in December
If you ask about our weather in July.
And we're so by God stubborn
We can stand touchin' noses
For a week at a time
And never see eye-to-eye.
But we'll give you our shirt
And a back to go with it
If your crops should happen to die.

Farmer:
So, what the heck, you're welcome,
Glad to have you with us.

Farmer and Wife:
Even though we may not ever mention it again.

Townspeople:
You really ought to give Iowa
Hawkeye Iowa
Dubuque, Des
Moines, Davenport, Marshalltown,
Mason City, Keokuk, Ames,
Clear Lake
Ought to give Iowa a try!

Man, Sioux City Sue....

I worked in a pizza parlor 20 years ago with a strict muslim girl from Casablanca.  I had a tape of trucker tunes that we used to play and for some reason Souix City Sue really caught her ear.  She used to sing it all day long.  It was hilarious watching this Morrocan girl make pizza while singing trucking tunes!  Thanks for bringing back a sweet memory.

Bumped this up to a 9. The more I hear the more I like.

Shawn Colvin + Dar Williams = Antje

Note to self:  Buy all of this artist's work... 8/10 and climbing {#Yes}

If this song is an example of her true feelings she'd best free herself up from being shackled to an existence in slummerville.
Can someone tell me how to pronouce her name?

Very Nice song...but about one of this style of songs is enough for me.

Rather plain {#Neutral} and reminds me from the church songs at  school

I'm going to have to check out this CD. Every time I hear a song from it, I think "I like this. Who is it? Jonatha Brooke? Maybe Dar Williams or Shawn Colvin?" And, lo and behold, it turns out to be Antje.
Gorgeous.
nice run Bill; this lady has a nice sound, nice voice . . . so much music out there, RP is at it's best when we here the underexposed musics. Thanks!!

Whoa, hey, new album! Weird, though, because she wrote Long Way a while ago now. Why is it just now making it onto an album?

Dunno, I prefer her solo stuff. Background-vocals-guy kinda washes her out.

The live solo version appeared on Little Peppermints (sadly out of print).  She explained at some point (can't remember where) that with this record she wanted to record "Merry-Go-Round" and "Long Way" in the studio.

I kind of agree with you — I prefer the solo versions of both songs, though the studio version of "Merry-Go-Round" is growing on me.  This version of "Long Way" is just a little too slow.  But still a lovely, lovely song.

It's a yes. You're going to Hollywood.  8.
Very pretty.
Sounding a bit Shawn Colvin-ish here, I think. Very nice.

Do you just like to let us know you can pronounce her name, Bill? This is the second cut you've played off this CD today.
