I was today years old when I heard on the old-timey radio that Bruce Springsteen "gave" Patti Smith the song Because the Night. "Gave" is what the raydio DJ said. Curiosity piqued, I dug into this later. Came across this fine article too:
Looks like theyâre just complaining that itâs being policed and that artists playing are being supported by the music business. Lord knows that the biz generates enough crap acts to keep them in Jaguars, but good luck getting independent acts like Norman and his Skiffle Five to play a huge stage like that any more.
Thirty+ years ago at a New Orleans Jazz & Heritage show I saw this young guy named Wynton playing trumpet in the Gospel tent (they said that Ellis Marsalisâ boy was good) and then walked over to see Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. A bit later, Jerry Lee Lewis snarled at the crowd âAny of mah wives out there?â But, like so many other things, times change.

Interesting, and yeah on paper I wouldn't shell out that kind of money for a festival before the bands are announced. But I paid maybe half that ($300US) last summer for THING, where I knew by heart, um, zero songs that I heard. It was great. But like Coachella, the videos coming out are free (at least they were for a week or so—they're mostly gone now) and really cool. Gorillaz had video effects added that Damon referred to onstage but only streamers could see.
