"The famed Can Opener bridge over Gregson Street may be peeling the tops off fewer trucks in the future. The street will close Wednesday for two weeks so the N.C. Railroad can elevate the bridge eight inches. When the street reopens Nov. 5, the clearance of the bridge will have been raised from 11 feet 8 inches to a more truck-friendly 12 feet 4 inches..."

Yes, it's fortunate that the area was mostly evacuated before the blast; that's a very busy intersection for auto and foot traffic - lots of students from a nearby high school and Duke Univ. If it were two hours earlier it could've been horrifically bad. I hadn't heard any more about the firefighter yet; I assume part of a building collapsed on him or he was hit by flying debris.

Homeowner leaves house unlocked, but wasn’t taken to the cleaners–Oct 18/18The Mounties say you should always lock your house when leaving, but it worked out okay for a Halifax area homeowner this week. The homeowner had left the house unlocked so a neighbor could walk the dog. The neighbor called the homeowner after seeing two women show up with a vacuum cleaner and a mop. The homeowner called the RCMP who responded and discovered the two women had cleaned the house and left without knowing they had the wrong address. Edit: Oops. I see now we already had a thread for Local News. My bad.
