Epic game, marred by weather but by my general recollection of balls that died on the warning track, the outcome would have been the same. As it was, it was an absolute first-pitch-to-last-out butt-clench. I imagine hitters are going to try to hit 'em on the ground tonight. Camilo Doval got, what, 5 fly ball outs in 6 batters? This should have been a 7-game series.

Any thoughts on Boston vs. the Rays? I understand that "automatic" double was in the rule book and correctly called, but what a way to lose.

I saw the video clip of that play and it was odd. But the rule was in place well before the game and you gotta follow the rules.

From USA Today

Here, in fact, is Rule 5.05(a)(8):

"Any bounding fair ball is deflected by the fielder into the stands, or over or under a fence on fair or foul territory, in which case the batter and all runners shall be entitled to advance two bases."

Even if the baserunner was moving on the play. Even in a disparate and funky alley of Fenway Park. Even in an era of instant replay, when some discretion, you'd imagine, could be applied.

The NY Times sez that the Tampa Bay Rays have dealt with this rule before:

...the Rays, perhaps more than most teams, should have been familiar with how the umpires’ decision on Kiermaier’s hit would come down: They argued for the same ruling to be enforced in their favor on a similar play in 2019.

From the Twitter link just above:

"In 2019 Kevin Cash came out to argue about a ball deflected into the stands that the runner on first should be stopped at 3rd base. He was correct and the umps got it right, just like tonight."

The Twitter page has a video clip of the 2019 play.

The whole thing reminds me of the "tuck rule" playoff game between the NE Patriots and the Oakland Raiders. That rule helped the Pats win the game and win their first Super Bowl.

I'm more astounded by the monitors in the front row seats. I mean, they're right there, they can see what's going on. The people in the nosebleeds need monitors way more.

For some reason I thought the Giants/Dodgers wouldn't meet until the NLCS. But because they're the Wild Card, the Dodgers are the 4th seed throughout so they will meet the Giants immediately (should they win the wild card game).

Most seasons the World Series is somewhat representative and I'm okay with who plays. But this year the Giants/Dodgers should play a best-of-7 and go immediately to the World Series where they will face the Rays. Anything else will be anticlimactic but I'll still watch!

In the clubhouse celebration today, someone mentioned that, since the National League might go with the DH next year and forevermore, that the Giants' Brandon Webb might have hit the last home run ever by a pitcher in Major League Baseball. Then someone mentioned Ohtani but still: NLDH! We don't need to talk about that right now, do we? NO.

What do you do if your team doesn't hit enough homers? Move the fences in, maybe? Well, if you're the 1983 White Sox, you leave the fences — and shift the entire field.

When I started the article, I thought that if other teams have power hitters that can take advantage of your park's dimensions but you don't, then the most effective strategy is to design your team to take advantage of the park. After all, you play more games there than anyone else. So yeah, not surprising it was only a short term solution.

Win your division, boys. Win your division.

========================

2 teams with 100 wins each in the NLWest. One will win the division, the other will be in the wild card game. The other team in the wild card race will finish 12–15 games behind them on the season, so clearly as the better team they don't have anything to worry a——OH HELL
