One thing you might try is having him sit down during a good RP set and jam along. Plus he'll come across a lot of non standard rhythms. I do that sometimes when I'm shaking off rust and the jumping around from style to style really gets you up to speed quick.

Also,I can bend a D'Adario Light or a Martin Marquis at least a note or 2 .I can even do 2 or 3 strings at a time in the same chord sometimes going in opposite directions, one string bending flat and one string bending sharp. These things just slide off like off your fingers in some unnatural way. Bad vibe for me, and good vibes are what makes music. My follow up to my own inquiry. them are my favorite standard strings. They sound jumbo on mine.

Definitely worth my money. I think you may want to try the Nanos (vs. the Polywebs) on an electric.

There are a lot of affordable drum/rhythm machines around (there are also some very expensive ones). Most of them will have a "metronome" setting as well as numerous drumbeats with variable tempos. Friends of mine who give music lessons have used them with students to teach not only "time", but also to teach syncopation and other rhythm fundamentals.
My suggestion too! (coming from a music teacher). You can also get guitar books that have play along CDs with them, and those are good to use to help with timing, too! I might also suggest some lessons. Nothing beats one on one teaching for such things.

The strings were still good and I swapped `em out anyway. Mostly because of the sensation that someone's snot was on my hands! Also, don't recall the tone and amplitude of the strings being to my liking. Your results may vary. (edit) Oh, I have no idea what alcohol will do to the coating.

He's sitting there, guitar tuned to something like GADEAD, just doodling while he talks, pretty nice sound. He plays a finger-busting C chord up around the 12th fret and says, "I think I need a fuller sound here." Without a blink he switched down to around the 5th fret, fingers octopusing around. Scary to see how fast his brain worked at reworking the chord. At this point I realized the class was so far over my head that I'd never see the sky, and I spent the rest of the time tucked away in a corner, awed, listening to de Grassi and the other students. I have an autographed cassette, where he writes "I hope to hear you play some day." Um, no. Not in this life time. ...they named a high school after him right?...
