Yes.

Frankly, it is a bit of a mystery. Common elements seem to include a disaffected portion of the population that has developed a profound distrust of their government and believe they are being cheated out of their rightful place in the societal hierarchy and concomitantly being deprived of their just deserts. They long for some version of the good ol’ days.

The parallels to all the other proto-fascists worldwide are glaring (point of reference: one of the German-based pro-Russian trolls here once told me in a backchat he thought a monarchy would be a much better idea than the current democracy). He's obviously not alone. Trump is obviously gunning for something similar in the States. Ergo so are all his supporters, who still support him despite all the evidence of his anti-democratic tendencies. Then you also have guys like Musk and Thiel and the clique of mega-rich silicon valley libertarians who believe that democracy is destined to fail, so seem quite content to help along the process by buying out social media platforms, for instance. Add to them the nationalist leaders like Orban, Putin, etc. and their supporters, who try to lead by whipping up xenophobic sentiment and fanning fear of minorities like gays, muslims and trans-gender individual,  all the while sabotaging genuine political solutions such as the EU, etc... the list goes on.

I mean, what do these guys think they are plugging for? Some kind of über-efficient German Nazi machine where everyone is running around with plaits in their hair and sporting ruddy complexions, eating copious wurst and sauerkraut and all dissension and social problems will have been conveniently "nullified"? I mean, REALLY? It wasn't even like that in Nazi Germany, which is about as close as you are ever going to get between the will of the people and the will of the Führer. There isn't a single country today that comes even close to the historical conditions that led to the rise of Nazi Germany. So, even under their own pitiful terms, any exercise in fascism is doomed to failure. Even if they did manage to take power, they'll be ripping off each other's heads at short notice.

No, at best what you are going to get is something like North Korea, Iran or the Soviet Union, without the benefit of high oil exports and flashy western goods to keep things afloat. It's going to be kleptocracy, rule-by-fear and totalitarianism and its going to be totally inefficient, gloomy as hell and dire.
And that's what it's going to be like if you are on the right side of the powers that be. For the rest, it's going to be sheer hell.

And at worst, it's just going to be sheer hell for everyone.

If you think a$$holes like Putin let pious speeches stop them from invading other countries then dream on.
I DID vote them.

Headline of the decade: Germany is building what's expected to become Europe's largest military. Perhaps decade is still too little. Of the century.

And it happens while I was eligible to vote. I am ashamed of my country.

After all, I've always been thinking that the Red-Greens were already responsible for the Kosovo war, the first war of aggression in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany that violated international law and the constitution.

So who else, if not them.

I did NOT vote for them.

I agree with Herr Schönbach, Admiral of the German Navy.

The whole relationship with Russia has been a lost opportunity.  Hemming Russia in with NATO membership is a huge act of disrespect.  And frankly, quite unnecessary for the security of these countries.  Will the gains to the USA in the form of increased weapons exports and agricultural export surpass the costs and the risk of blow back?

The relationship with the Ukraine has been gaffe-ridden from the beginning.   Bringing the Ukraine closer to Europe and moving in the direction of a European political and economic model could have been done without alienating Russia.

If we tell the Russians we only buy hydrogen, they then burn their natural gas themselves and use it to make hydrogen, give it to us and we heat with it, then the CO2 emissions are in Russia and we have achieved our climate goals!

Yes, no shit. That's the background. We are sitting here on the Titanic, everyone is aware that the ship is sinking, and they are now doing a bit of emissions cosmetics so that at the end of their already foreseeable failed term in office they can say that they have reduced our emissions.

I actually agree with you here. Though it must also be seen as a first step towards truly green gases. Eine sub-optimale Lösung by all means but maybe a step towards a better result down the road. Nevertheless, it's hard to escape the feeling of too little too late.
