There are a few problems with the translation of this old Danish ballad offered below. I am not a native English speaker, so it is a bit difficult for me to convey the mood of the lyrics that were written in the 1800’s, but here is my try at it. The tune is as old or even older.

Sorten Muld (the band name means “black soil” in ancient Danish) had great success in the latter half of the 1990’ies with this cd and the one that followed. All songs were folktronica versions of old ballads.

THE FARMER AND THE ELF MAID

A farmer lived a bit south of our creek
that had all he could wish for
of sons he has four, of daughters he has two
- and I am longing for all my days –

A maid lived in the rapid current of the creek
never would you forget such a beautiful figure
in the night she sneaked into the farmer’s dream
- and I am longing for all my days -

In the early morning the farmer had to see her
but the current was too strong and the steed slipped
- and I am longing for all my days -

A farmer lived a bit south of our creek
that had all he could wish for
never again the farmer and the elf maid were seen
- and I am longing for all my days -

"Mange tak" for this good try!

Kazoo would see this cover and say they are doing elevations the old fashioned way...I helped him on those rare occasions that old fashioned was good enough

Just love this band, and how they bring these old Nordic tales back to life...
As I sometimes have to explain to my American friends;
Danish - Ain't just something you eat 😋

God oversættelse

nice accurate translation

tak

thanks
The only song in Danish on my playlist.

And speaking of Danish, a couple years ago I watched the French silent movie "The Passion of Joan of Arc." (A fabulous movie by the way.) I was at the theater early, and the tech director said that the subtitles weren't in English. I know decent conversational French, so I volunteered to translate along through the movie. I watched about the first five minutes, and realized that the subtitles were actually in Danish. WTH? The director was Danish, and the film was first released in Copenhagen. "Original director's cut."

We apologize for the fault in the subtitles. Those responsible have been sacked.

After hearing another Sorten Muld song on RP, I downloaded the album.  It's wonderful even tho I have no idea what they are saying.  I believe it's entitled simply III.  Definitely recommend.

Nice language, nice song :-).

Ulla Bendixen, the presumed vocalist on this (per Wikipedia), closely approaches Karen Matheson of Capercaillie in velvety vocal purity.

Wow.  Easily a 9 for me.

 You mean "hear" again
Been a while, good to here again.

Been a while, good to here again.
The quirky sound effects are not working for me.
I think Bill is doing a good job finding some of these cool songs from all over the planet...he is chipping away at a massive floating iceberg, however—-there is so much great music from other countries out there and and it defies the dreaded 'world music' category—-its essence is derived from its very locality; not some marketing or labeling scheme, not some CD you find at Starbucks or crammed into a Rough Guiide CD.

Yes. Native language singing = much texture-added benefit.
So very lovely. And interesting.

Mainly it is us listeners who find this stuff and upload it to Bill and Rebecca in the hope of spreading more aural bliss and wider tastes to the RP community. Now go and dig up something fantastic, then click that LRC/Upload button and hope that it gets through their stringent screening. ;)
Aaah. The sound of home :)
Its hard not to like this soft sound, still i often wonder with foreign lyrics whether or not i am lucky to be missing out.  Love the sound of the voice though.

Aahh, not often one hears Nyckelharpa (Key Harp) played on international radio. =)
Keep it up Bill!

This is sweet.

Especially on the day that America lays its demons to rest.

A thousand thanks!

Didn't expect Sorten Muld to be played on RP. You rise in my admiration and on my favorite stations list.
I am a bit embarrassed to admit that as a father of three girls, I find this myth rather appealing (extracted from Wiki) The lyrics are old stories from Danish folk tradition, about jealousy, murder and creatures. In Kirstin from Mark II a father serves a meal of his daughter's boyfriend's heart for her. In Ulver from Mark III a man takes his girlfriend into the forest to kill her and bury her without her knowledge. He falls asleep and she cuts him in pieces with his own sword.
This works nicely today..

stranglely, I think I get it. Does the narrator(singer) sing from the view point of the man's abandoned wife?
I'm not danish (but close), but I believe the title of the song is 'The farmer and the fairygirl'. Very scandinavian folk-music-ish. Nice to hear :-)

I have no idea if this is deep house, drum & bass, or whatever the shit the kids are calling it these days, but I will say this: on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, still a couple hours away from the end of the work day, this is a pretty cool song.
