Sometimes I feel so low-down and disgusted
Can't help but wonder what's happenin' to my companions,
Are they lost or are they found, have they counted the cost it'll take to bring
down
All their earthly principles they're gonna have to abandon?
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

I had a woman down in Alabama,
She was a backwoods girl, but she sure was realistic,
She said, "Boy, without a doubt, have to quit your mess and straighten out,
You could die down here, be just another accident statistic."
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

All that foreign oil controlling American soil,
Look around you, it's just bound to make you embarrassed.
Sheiks walkin' around like kings, wearing fancy jewels and nose rings,
Deciding America's future from Amsterdam and to Paris
And there's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Man's ego is inflated, his laws are outdated, they don't apply no more,
You can't rely no more to be standin' around waitin'
In the home of the brave, Jefferson turnin' over in his grave,
Fools glorifying themselves, trying to manipulate Satan
And there's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Big-time negotiators, false healers and woman haters,
Masters of the bluff and masters of the proposition
But the enemy I see wears a cloak of decency,
All non-believers and men stealers talkin' in the name of religion
And there's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

People starving and thirsting, grain elevators are bursting
Oh, you know it costs more to store the food than it do to give it.
They say lose your inhibitions, follow your own ambitions,
They talk about a life of brotherly love, show me someone who knows how to
live it. There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Well, my baby went to Illinois with some bad-talkin' boy she could destroy
A real suicide case, but there was nothin' I could do to stop it,
I don't care about economy, I don't care about astronomy
But it sure do bother me to see my loved ones turning into puppets,
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

One of Dylan's best.  It's an exposition of why he's a lyrical genius!
I'm surprised more rappers don't cover Bob Dylan songs. Seriously though. Just reading the lyrics to this song and I can hear Eminem passionately spitting this one out.

The "slow train comin'" is supposed to be the return of Christ and the judgment of all men. This was the first album Bob released after becoming a Christian. He's simply saying that, though people will come and go, and do evil in their lives, thinking they're going to get away with it for "where is the sign of His coming? All things are the way they've always been and every shall be," but like Bob is saying, the judgment is sure, even if it seems like it's taking a long time to get here. We will all indeed be judged on the Last Day for what we've done while in our bodies, whether good or evil, and we shall be rewarded thusly. Bank on it.

That makes no sense at all. If there's no God then there is no judgment. Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow you die. And no matter if you're the nicest person in the world, you're going to the same place as the worst person in the world. Then again, such designations as "best and worst" in relation to "good and eviil" cannot exist without objective truth and ethics that is above whatever the latest "morality" is. Otherwise anything goes, and there is no right or wrong. But since that's not the case, and there is not only "a god" but THE God, then there absolutely is a day of judgment, and we will all face it.

The only thing you got right is that "we done fucked up real bad". The question is, are you going to attempt to stand in your own righteousness? If so, count on nothing but everlasting destruction. I don't know what that means and don't plan to find out. But God has made the way for you to escape the wrath that is already upon us, and which will be upon us all in the full, and that is through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and repentance of your own self-righteousness and wickedness. Cheers.

How freakin’ relevant
"Attention all  passengers.  Train arriving now on track Omega.

Don't need no baggage, you just get on board."
I thought for a second when this song first came on this morning that he was singing scat, not actual words. Just Dylan being as Dylan, being as Dylan as he can. Reminded me of the story, perhaps apocryphal, from the We Are the World recording sessions, with other singers coaching Dylan on how to sound more like Dylan.

He played the homecoming concert at the U. of Alabama in 1989 (90?). Worst concert ever. It would've been better had he actually phoned it in. He didn't seem too happy to be in Tuscaloosa. Yeah, I can imagine why, but don't take the money.

Everything is great about this track -- the lyrics, the delivery, the attitude, the individual members of the band (guitar! drums! horns! organ!), and the production. I listened to this album obsessively when it came out and I was just 14 -- drove my older brother crazy.
It was my ticket to a passenger seat on the Bob Dylan bus -- I'm grateful to have grown up listening to such a profoundly expressive and challenging artist while he/she was producing such high-quality work. You knew what it was like to look forward to something and have it be great; to look forward to something and have it fall short; to have given up and have it unexpectedly turn out to be transcendent. This can be said about Dylan albums and Dylan concerts over this period.
Just a little bit borrowed from Cream's Strange Brew. Bad bad Bobby Zimmerman.

My first Dylan album given to me by my mom at age 14. Wore it out and was so inspired by it. Most do not stop to think that they really are serving something other than themselves. Like Bob says "Man's ego's inflated".
Nice to see the appreciation for this masterpiece has grown over the years.
What a pleasure to hear it here! Hats off!

It's astounding when you really think about how quickly he absorbed Christianity, pumped out a couple of really good gospel records and then moved on to the next thing... as he did many times over...

This is a great song on a great album.
Mark Knopfler!?
Wonderful song from a wonderful  album. One of the few musicians that can make God-squadding put a smile on your face.

Have a listen to God Named All The Animals off the same album.
Bob had such a great band on this album! One of my favourite Bob albums just because of that.

I've not heard this song before, and I like it a lot more than most Dylan.
The lyrics are particularly prescient, though...

I typically do ignore that track ;-) If ever there was a throwaway cut I'd say that was it.  Although a lot of the experts' reviews slam "Gotta Serve Somebody" as a 'not-quite-up-to-Bob-quality' track, and I guess I get that.

And the line you mention is both insightful and understandable, less surrealism here than in most of his recordings.  I'm still a huge fan of the (OSCAR WINNING) track "Things of Changed" - my favorite line from that is "You can hurt someone and not even know it."  Pretty straightforward that is, whereas most of the lyrics for "Visions of Johanna" cannot be taken literally (as one example) nor the lyrics for "Mr. Tambourine Man" either.  And I say that's BRILLIANCE defined; his ability to express so many different emotions still astounds me, and I have no qualms with his Nobel prize.  Heck, the more I try to write something intelligent about BD songs, the more I feel completely inadequate as a writer.  Makes me feel like a kindergarten student drawing stick figures compared to Picasso's work.  Just a completely different talent level, and I can clearly see how Dylan himself would say he sold his soul to the devil in order to have these skills.  LONG LIVE RP!!

If you care about Dylan or respect his work, check out this clip from his 2004 interview with Ed Bradley. Bob saws that his early songs were almost magically written and he doesn't know he did it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_wAZ02JUtM

There are other clips from that interview floating around on YouTube. FWIW, Dylan confesses to Bradley in another clip that he deliberately released crappy albums in the 70s to dampen the adulation directed at him...

I'm also a fan of the Dylan & the Dead album this was on (and "Joey" from that album.) PEACE and Long Live RP!!

Recording sessions
Dylan first heard Mark Knopfler when assistant and engineer Arthur Rosato played him the Dire Straits single, "Sultans of Swing". Later, on March 29, 1979, Dylan caught the final show of a Dire Straits' residency at the Roxy in Los Angeles, California. Dylan approached Knopfler after the show, asking the guitarist to participate on his next album. Knopfler agreed, unaware of the religious nature of the material that awaited him.

musically this song has sort of a "once upon a time in the west" by dire straits vibe.

I have similar feelings about Mark Knopfler, who usually bores me to death. Here, he seems to have found something to really unty his talent.

I didn't appreciate Bob Dylan when I was growing up, but now I really am getting into his music and lyrics (his voice still drives me up a wall.)   {#Music}

Sometimes I feel so low-down and disgusted
Can't help but wonder what's happening to my companions
Are they lost or are they found, have they counted the cost it'll take to bring down
All their earthly principles they're gonna have to abandon ?
There's a slow, slow train coming up around the bend.

I had a woman down in Alabama
She was a backwoods girl, but she sure was realistic
She said, "Boy, without a doubt, have to quit your mess and straighten out
You could die down here, be just another accident statistic."
There's a slow, slow train coming up around the bend.

All that foreign oil controlling American soil
Look around you, it's just bound to make you embarrassed
Sheiks walking around like kings, wearing fancy jewels and nose rings
Deciding America's future from Amsterdam and to Paris
And there's a slow, slow train coming up around the bend.

Man's ego is inflated, his laws are outdated, they don't apply no more
You can't rely no more to be standing around waiting
In the home of the brave, Jefferson turning over in his grave
Fools glorifying themselves, trying to manipulate Satan
And there's a slow, slow train coming up around the bend.

Big-time negotiators, false healers and woman haters
Masters of the bluff and masters of the proposition
But the enemy I see wears a cloak of decency
All non-believers and men stealers talking in the name of religion
And there's a slow, there's slow train coming up around the bend.

People starving and thirsting, grain elevators are bursting
Oh, you know it costs more to store the food than it do to give it
They say lose your inhibitions, follow your own ambitions
They talk about a life of brotherly love, show me someone who knows how to live it
There's a slow, slow train coming up around the bend.

Well, my baby went to Illinois with some bad-talking boy she could destroy
A real suicide case, but there was nothing I could do to stop it
I don't care about economy, I don't care about astronomy
But it's sure does bother me to see my loved ones turning into puppets
There's a slow, slow train coming up around the bend.

I hated this when it came out, but now I think it's kinda cool.  And a slow train sounds like a nice idea...
You're such a pretty boy when you get all spitty and wide eyed and toothy like that. And those bIG words, they're so ...I dunno, they're just soo mmm bIG !  ... I can't help myself.. do you really look as good as your picture? ;)

gollum
...controlled by foreign oil, and the one-way Zion train to catastrophe
And this is Mark Knopfler on (solo) guitar... Gotta love it!

{#Clap}
Not Bobby's best. Perhaps among his longest. . . .
A great period for Dylan: usually overlooked....  wanna have fun: check out Saved  That is an interesting and at times very good cd....
Slow, long and unbearable train....

bob dylan is a fucking train wreck
  This is a frequent scene at my house. Thomas and his friends are ever so prone to catastrophe. (In fact, if you watch the TV shows, the same is true.) chicken/egg? {#Think}

Maybe Bob knew what the hell he was talking about. Slow train coming, indeed.

. . . 3 decades in fact! Can't believe this album is 30 years old.

I thought this was pretty innovative when it came out. I like the symbolism of the train, whenever it is used in popular music.

Like Dylan's "it takes alot to laugh it takes a train to cry"

I wore this album out when I was a teenager.  what a blast from the past.
well, back in 1979 this where maybe strange lyrics:

'Sheiks walkin' around like kings, wearing fancy jewels and nose rings,
Deciding America's future from Amsterdam and to Paris'

but it's very true by now....

Dylan's Slow Train following after Bob Marley's Zion Train

A great follow-up would be 'Woman on a Train' by The Fixx.

the lyrics are like he wrote this today
Great set you got going here Bill, productivity is taking a big hit right now.
Dylan's Slow Train following after Bob Marley's Zion Train... awesome!!  A perfect twist would have been the Dylan/Dead version, but this will work.

*Edit - Ok, I take it back.  The guitar work in this outshines the Dead version; simple, clean, sublime.

...prophetic, indeed...

just learned my older bro was born in the same hospital as Bob. St. Mary's in Duluth. Cosmic. {#Daisy}

Pretty good for Dylan.
Knopfler is god.

What a great song! I was lucky enough to be at the Ratdog show in NH in October when they broke out their cover of this. I had to get this CD out and listened to it a lot over the next week. Love it! Ratdog's cover was amazing, too.
also check out the cover on the Dylan and the Dead 1987 live album : (click here)

Thanks, also found confirmation on Wiki. Seems Bob was born again and found the Lord. I am trying to find a reason to like him, I really am, c'mon Bob, give me a reason!
