There's a wind inside my soul,
Burnin' secrets in the cold.
My spirit rages.

And the faces in my field,
Only flesh made out of him.
My body ages.

Houses made of stone and ice.
Chimneys smokey paradise.
If you gotta leave, you gotta leave alone.

Oh Lord, there's a full moon, oh Lord, in my eyes.
There's a full moon; insane vision in disguise.
There's a full moon.
Oh Lord, there's a full moon out tonight.

Old men close their eyes and weep.
Young men pray that they're asleep,
Inside the madness.

Young girls dance between the sparks,
And old women die in parks,
From too much sadness.

And we dig a million holes.
And were goin' down for gold.
If you gotta leave, you gotta leave alone.

Oh Lord, there's a full moon, oh Lord, in my eyes.
There's a full moon; insane vision in disguise.
There's a full moon.
Oh Lord, there's a full moon out tonight.

This is another good example that you don't need to be a good singer to be a successful singer. This song has energy. I give it a 6.
Awful. Awful.
Clearly not even close to some of Hiatt's best. It wouldn't kill me not to hear this one again on RP.
I'm a big Hiatt fan, but the production on this early stuff is suspect...the product of cheezy A&R types trying to squeeze a round artist into a square hole...
Make it stop........................
wow. this is awful! the comments about his voice (sounds like a muppet, etc.) are great, though.
Ack....don't get it.
Of all the wonderful songs JH has produced, why play this ho-hum selection? I might add that his voice is naturally strange anyway, but really weird in this one, even for me.
This neverending Butt Rock solo is making my ears bleed. Make it Stop!!

Why would I possibly like this song . . . the backup vocals are flat as hell, and John Hiatt's voice does not need any help sounding aweful. It is roughly produced, etc., etc. But for some reason, I still like it (a little bit). I don't think I would if I heard it too much though.
This one goes way back!! Agree on the production. Very sloppy. Maybe thats it charm!!!

A cool tune with a nice jam that reminded me of Dave Mason's "Look at You Look at Me". I've always liked John, but hadn't heard anything older than Bring the Family.
Heh. Sorry to follow my own quote, but this time it reminded me of "All Along the Watchtower", which Dave Mason played on too. Did a good version on his own as well.
Rock On Grover.

SIDEBURNS ARE BACK IN.....
Ho Hum
I'm usually a fan of John Hiatt, but this tune just isn't doin' it for me. It is, however, quite interesting to hear some of his earlier work. I've never heard anything of Hiatt's that is this old. Thanks, RP, for not just sticking to the newer tunes.

more cowbell
It's true that this isn't his best. However, if you put it in the context of 1974, the arrangement does stand out some. He includes a funk element with the percussion that is clearly ahead of its time vis-a-vis his peers. Our 20/20 ears thirty (thirty!) years later have acclimated to these sounds. So perhaps we can't assess it for its merits back in the days when the Carpenters ruled the airwaves.

Hiatt's talent hardly shows through the busy arrangement. It could've done without the percussion, for instance and the electric guitar is much too prominent in the parts where Hiatt is singing. It sounds kinda forced. Not one of his best, IMO, but as natsthename commented, it was one of the first songs he recorded.
Huh? Normally, I agree with you Johray, but the orchestration of this song is fantastic! I don't see it as busy, but rather philharmonic. And the percussion, *mwah!* Is it perfect? No. But it's pretty damn fun, and definitely shows signs of good things to come.

What a funny comment considering this album came out in 1990 and he's still making great records. Run out of ideas indeed!!
Actually, this album came out as an ALBUM in 1974, so he was just a fledgling songwriter at the time and has vastly improved!
snap out of it...!
Dave Masonish.
He sounds like a Muppet.
Nice to hear this master songwriter at the beginning (1974) of his long journey.
Tryin' a wee bit too hard here.....turns into some kind of erzatz Dr. John impersonation.

Big fan of Hiatt but this is a little yada yada. He's either trying too hard or has just run out of ideas.....shame

I'm not sure a song with this energy really suits Hiatt. He sounds like he is going to hurt himself if he keeps singing this much longer.
This particular track has Hiatt's voice sounding a bit ZZ Top-ish. Bizarre, and detracts from an otherwise OK selection.

I had only heard recent (1994+) John Hiatt and never really got into him. That being said, I really like this track hope you (Bill G.) will play more of this vintage.
A cool tune with a nice jam that reminded me of Dave Mason\'s \"Look at You Look at Me\". I\'ve always liked John, but hadn\'t heard anything older than Bring the Family.
