And his hand it fell behind her
As his arm it reached around
And she looked at the window
And she watched the shade go down

It was a private conversation
No one heard her say
That the man she left behind her
Was two thousand miles away

Singing boy pick up that fiddle
And play that steel guitar
And find yourself a lady
And dance right where you are

There was a lonely girl from nowhere
With a smile all sweet with pain
And she never stopped to wonder
If she'd see him again

It was a private conversation
No one heard her say
That man that she was looking for
Was only twenty streets away

Singing boy pick up that fiddle
And play that steel guitar
And find yourself a lady
And dance right where you are

And the band it just kept playing
As she came walking in
And he never stopped to wonder
If he'd see her again

It was a private conversation
No one heard him say
That girl he left behind him
Was two thousand miles away

He just sang boy pick up that fiddle
And play that steel guitar
And find yourself a lady
And dance right where you are

And the moral of this story
Is I guess it's easier said than done
To look at what you've been through
And to see what you've become

It's a private conversation
No one hears you say
It's a private conversation

And his hand it fell behind her
As his arm it reached around
And she looked at the window
And she watched the shade go down

It was a private conversation
No one heard her say
It was a private conversation
No one heard him say
It was a private conversation
No one heard her say
It was a private conversation

Great song, great artist but no-so good dude.  He once stopped his show in Santa Fe because someone was smoking a joint at an OUTSIDE venue. Got booed, of course!

Sounds like he respects his fans' health. Smoke is lethal.
One of the most frustrating experiences of my life is spotting Lyle Lovett in a country bar in Nashville, and not being able to share my excitement with anybody -- because none of the Toby Keith fans in the place had ever heard of Lyle Lovett. Later confirmed that he's known to hang out there.
I gotta hear Road to Ensenada now. "Right now I'm feeling bad."

Some people have an aversion to potential addiction, me included.
Good freakin grief! Haven't thought about tthis guy in about a century! Still sounds good though!
Hearing Counting Crows' "Rain King" in this song.

he is a quiet but personable performer and must have some character - got trampled by a bull while protecting his uncle. This is a teriffic album and his shows are enjoyable.

I was at that show and it wasn't a deal breaker for me anyways.
More Lyle Lovett! There are no substitutes!

A truly great song from a great album!  More Lyle!
This may be the first Lyle Lovett song I think is first rate.  His reputation seems often to exceed my estimation. But not this time.

A lot of times people write .."Wow, great lyrics".  Now  it's my turn and not only this song - Lyle Lovett, an American Poet!
This is a great tune from one of his best efforts, RTE. More Lyle.
