Charades, pop skill
Water hyacinth
Named by a poet
Imitation of life

Like a koi in a frozen pond
Like a goldfish in a bowl
I don't want to hear you cry

That sugarcane that tasted good
That's cinnamon, that's Hollywood
Come on, come on
No one can see you try

You want the greatest thing
The greatest thing since bread came sliced
You've got it all
You've got it sized

Like a Friday fashion show teenager
Freezing in the corner
Trying to look like you don't try

That sugarcane that tasted good
That's cinnamon, that's Hollywood
Come on, come on
No one can see you try

No one can see you cry

That sugarcane that tasted good
That's freezing rain, that's what you could
Come on, come on
No one can see you cry

This sugarcane, this lemonade
This hurricane, I'm not afraid
Come on, come on
No one can see me cry

This lightning storm, this tidal wave
This avalanche, I'm not afraid
Come on, come on
No one can see me cry

That sugarcane that tasted good
That's who you are, that's what you could
Come on, come on
No one can see you cry

That sugarcane that tasted good
That's who you are, that's what you could
Come on, come on
No one can see you cry

Not to knock the new stuff, but my favorite moments on REM's last couple ablums is when they drop the mellow Adult Contemporary facade and show some of the old energy (Lotus, this song)
I also thought that this was an older tune, until they hit the chorus. Then I new otherwise.
I generally like REM, but this one just lacks any kind of life, depth of emotion, or intrest (yawn). Stick with the older REM tunes, \"hits\" or not, which are worth hearing.

This is NOT a song for critics. Hell, even Led Zep pushed out a pop tune now and then... (D\'yer Mak\'er and The Ocean come to mind.) Enjoy it FWIW, and hope you don\'t hear it a bazillion times. Queue
tiresome...
Nice tongue-in-cheek tune from REM. Reveal is a phenominal album, IMHO. Adieu, Blarg
That sugarcane is giving me a toothache! :(
Ho-hum sums it up. Stipe & Co have their bright moments but, this ain\'t one of \'em. A high school student could have come up with those lyrics. The melody is on par with Barry Manilow\'s McDonald\'s jingle. I only wish I had Michael Stipe\'s financial resources.
OK, it\'s not \"Fall on Me\" or \"The One I Love\", it\'s still an amazing melody... an excellently crafted tune. I\'d be happy if I wrote one song like this once in my life... Not likely... R.E.M. is a group with few equals, I don\'t think they\'ve sputtered out just yet, and if they did, isn\'t 20 years of often groundbreaking material not enough? They\'ll proabably have one or two more earth-shattering hits before going their separate ways... And just for the record, I love R.E.M. but Micahel Stipe can really bother me at times... thank god I can separate the artists from his art, although I think he isn\'t the main tunesmith... and speaking of which, why doesn\'t Mike Mills (or was it Peter Buck) ever sing lead on selected album tracks anymore? I agree...besides this reminds me a lot of early REM, and maybe Mike had something profound to say, but I couldn't understand him....and didn't/don't care...cause it's all aobut he music :D
good pop is... good pop! i find nothing wrong with that.
I\'m listening to this song and thinking, \"Gosh, this sounds an awful lot like the bubble gum pop music I loved when I was say 11 YEARS OLD!\" And that would be The Archies I\'m referring to. Then when I saw that it was REM I was quite surprised that they succumbed to pop. Didn\'t like it, no sir, not one little bit.
