The whole Sailor album is worthy of a good listen.  Boz Scaggs made his performance and writing bones on this one.

I Agree on all counts!  PS: another commenter stated that fog horns don't sound like this. They DO in the NYC / Port Newark harbor!  He must live in a small fishing village!  LOL!

That's just good parenting. You should be proud, you did well :)

From years ago...As a youth..living in the fog of amazing music!!!!!
Steve Miller was the luckiest guy on earth--he made himself a pop music career without significant talent and NO signing voice.  I listened to interviews of him talking about his Fly Like an Eagle-era music, and he tires to make himself sound like some musical genius.  Sorry Steve, you mixed a little talent and some Pink Floyd ripoffs into a career.
The more I hear this tune, the more I like it!!  Thanx RP!
SUPERB!!!  ICONIC ALBUM!!!  I never heard this tune before.  Thanx RP!

He did something with Paul McCartney that sounded like they took 5 minutes to put it together.

Maybe he just got lazy, or stopped taking drugs.  You would probably have to ask him.
(Too) long of an intro

Made me log in to find out who this was...wow, interesting.  Never would have guessed.  Thanks once again RP for blowing my mind...

Really cool and unique but the foghorns made me feel really anxious. It didn't help that I was trying to deal with something frustrating at the time.
... nearly forgotten - thanks for bringing it back to me.
Santana meets Pink Floyd.
Can't say I've heard this before and would not have guessed Steve Miller. There's a group right there on my tongue, but cannot express who it is....jazz for sure, that sax is the trigger. Thanks Bill for playing the obscure.
Just the bomb.
Oh thank you Bill.... I needed to bring the BP down by 30 points this afternoon.

Sometimes a guy likes to be able to have a successful career, nice house, car, provide for his family, and what not.

Miller can't be blamed for writing huge hits and becoming a household name in rock and roll for those years in the late 70's.  He likely would not still be performing now without them.   Beside, Fly Like An Eagle kicks ass.  It did then and it still does now.  Kick back, pop it on, grab your favorite beverage, turn down the lights AND turn up the volume.  Those first guitar notes still put a smile on my face 4 decades later.

...and he is STILL a great live performer.

Listened to this (the entire album too) often  back in my Navy days.  It's a great album and he was with Boz Scaggs in those days.  "Livin' In The USA" came out of this album.  Bueno!
I've caught a couple of Steve Miller interviews, and to hear Steve Miller interviewed is to never want to hear one of his songs again.  His ego is positively Trumpian.

But admittedly, this isn't bad.

Wow, this came in a time nobody knew anything about this band here in Germany, and esp. of sounds from the US. We got to know english pop art, while at the same time bands in America were chilling and rocking the other way. I must have this LP anywhere....
It was a dark and stormy song...
One of my favorite Steve Miller Band albums.  Still had Boz Scaggs in the band.
Nice Monday Morning vibes going on Bill,  Thanks!

Too bad; it's nothing like "regular" Steve Miller music.
I've always liked experimental works, longer takes that let you dream.  Then at 40 I started listening to classical music, that requires a whole new set of skills and mindset.
Before Pink Floyd - we had The Steve Miller Band.

Well not really before but at the same time.
This song instigated some of the most interesting comments evah!
Not a Steve Miller fan, had to pass on that offering
Far and away his best album.
The beginning...with the blaring fog horn...is juuuuust a bit annoying...and almost long enough to make one go "next."  But if you're patient...and grit yer teeth...it ends well?
Long time favorite.  Very creative.  And has held up well over the years..

Interesting not quite what I remember from Steve Miller Band

Rock On!!!  (kay-now, where's my bag of blue powder and dried shroomies... : )
Old Steve Miller Band is always a treat.
It is worth noting that this song was part of a cycle of songs on the album that were supposed to be taken as a whole, not individual parts.  It loses something standing alone, but was one of the more distictive songs on the album.  That is why best hits albums of a certain era by a specific artist lose something in translation.
It's always nice to her something you've never heard before — hippy trippin' or not... ...very relaxing — and I don't even have the proper supplements to really enjoy! {#Meditate}
More hippy nonsense. A well deserved 2
Vinyl downstairs, unplayed in 15 years. Time to dig it out for sure. Feeling trippy now {#Eek}
Once again I must stop what I'm doing and just sit back and listen. Thanks Bill.

The last time you played this I went out and bought a bunch of Steve Miller stuff - been really enjoying it.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!
Steve Miller is one of those ones who really had something interesting to say and had the chops to back it up when he was coming up. Then came the commercial crap. They say hope burns eternal in the hearts of men. I'm holding out hope that Steve might find that buried vision he once posessed, just as Steve Winwood has, finally. It's gotta be in there somewhere.
I'd never heard this until now - very cool! Yes, the beginning is weird, and it does sound a bit Floyd-ish. Love the Hammond, too. Someone posted earlier that this song takes too long to start for it to be played on RP. I disagree - I think that RP is the perfect place for this kind of music.
Had the distinct pleasure of seeing Mr. Miller several times. His drummer was outstanding and when they took the stage Miller would say, "Hello I'm Stevie Guitar Miller." This album was actually required listening back in "The Day."
Freaky start of this song.. aaayyy..
Thought it was my own lower intestines playing up there... Hang on, it's starting to go a bit Pink Floyd-ey...

problem is the Libertarian party has lost touch with reality almost as badly as the Dems have. The Candidates the Liberts give out are like David Duke giving tips on Welfare Reform while he was in the Repub Party. Yeah, lots of the ideas they stand for are great. But the rest of the ideas are unpalatable to anyone with half an once of common sense. A few years back, they even put forward a candidate who thought the Brady Bill and Clinton gun bans were no big deal and didn't need repealing (or as finally happened, fading into the sunset). Hello? He changed stance for election but his statements were still there. We seem to be left with The Stupid Party(republicans), The Commies(democrats who seem to forget what democracy really means), And the Nutjobs(Big "L" libertarian who seem to have some great ideas but hold several that are suicide either economically, or societally) Til they find someone who doesn't have a few too many nutjob ideas, I'll remain a small "l" libertarian who has to hold nose and vote "R" and hope for the best, because the worst thing for any freedom loving human is to let the Communistic Nannies in charge (Though Rudy and Huckabee are Nanny staters as well....dammit!)

So extraordinarily cool to hear this on RP (or anywhere outside my home stereo). I have all the early Steve Miller Band (pre-Book of Dreams) on vinyl and they've lain ignored on the shelf for years. Only recently, on the request of an old hippie friend, did I liberate them by ripping to MP3. Now that these tunes are more familiar, that fog horn was instantly recognizable. Points for obscurity, if not actual quality...

I'm glad to see that Rush "Druggie" Limbaugh and Sean "Slant Head" Hannity are listening to Radio Paradise. Maybe it'll sway 'em.

Well... that was pleasantly weird. Had no idea the Steve Miller Band had records out before Fly Like An Eagle. Dunno that I could listen to it a lot before getting tired of it, though. Might fit into a playlist with Santana's Welcome album.

This is so obscure, I thought I'd never hear this again on the web or the radio. I had this tape about twenty years ago and really enjoyed it. It was such a departure from his later work. I believe this is the first or second album from Steve Miller (from 1968).
