Pop the cork, a champagne glass
Raise to the future, drink to the past
Thank the Lord for the friends he cast,
In the play he wrote for you.

And if you love the girl man, light up a torch
Blaze a trail to her front porch
Kiss her til your lips are scorched
Til the rain comes down on you

Chorus
Bless your sweet mistakes,
That crumble you down to your knees.
That brought you to this place
Changing you by degrees...
When change was just what you needed...
What you needed...

So if you live your life in a three piece suit,
In a cocktail dress, or combat boots
You pick your path and you walk your truth
And the world will come round to you.

It's a long strange ride, I can't tell you why
But there's a place in your pocket where peace can abide
You pull it out, it's a compass, a guide
And it will put a little soul on you.

Chorus

And in this wild blue world
There is a soul weavin' fine feelin' girl
But you've got to walk in paradise to find a pearl
If you only believe,
You'll get what you need... what you needed...

Conquer your fear and you'll master the game,
Life is always and never the same.
Use a little faith to light the flame ,
And I know you'll connect to you.

Chorus

Pop the cork, a champagne glass
Raise to the future, drink to the past
Thank the Lord for the friends he cast,
In the play he wrote for you

Soon you'll be able to hide your own Easter eggs!

I'll need Shallow Hal's Tony Robbins goggles to enjoy this song.
I never saw the movie, but came here to say how cookie-cutterish this song is. I concur with the Hootie comment. 2
It's actually the name of an album.  Maybe you should use that cover art as a number of people can't get past the movie association.  Ellis is  very good. 8.  He has many, many good songs.
I had to get up to exclaim how annoying this is to me...
This is so annoying!!
Shitty song,shitty movie...insulting and demeaning(the movie) (the song is merely annoying){#Arghhh}
I gave it a 5 for the lyrics, which I can really relate to. The song itself is oof ... I keep thinking of Hootie and the Blowfish being played on the loudspeaker at the Mall.

Can't quite place the accent, but I've never heard the like in a natural setting. Am I wrong to call this an affectation?

Haven't seen the movie, because I didn't care for the premise. I don't know Ellis Paul's other work. But I have to say that this is one hell of a lyric, and that makes the song at least an 8 to me.

Prolly as much as I hated the premise of the movie

I agree on both counts.

"And if you love the girl man, light up a torch

Love that verse!

love the lyrics
Horrid.  What an annoying voice.
Love the cover art — especially her shadow! {#Roflol}

Less histrionic than that Buckley guy . . . but not enough so.  No, not nearly enough.
boring...
YUCK!

Just got his live album. It's a much more acoustic and thoughtfull than this, but I can't get enough of it. If you want something by him get Speed of Trees first, then get the live album. Whilst his web site has a bizare low quality sampler of the live CD (Radio free Ellis) it's quality realy lets it down and loses most of the feeling that makes me like the album.
I just bought the Live album also--and have the same response--I keep playing both CD's over and over.

His voice is very annoying. Ugh!
I agree it reminds me of Angie as well (who is absolutely phenomenal live). Maybe we could get a little Angie played on here? I would definitely prefer it over this one.

is this Rod Stewart

Ellis isn't as "edgy" as Angie can be. But I like them both!

Absolutely! Love his song "Spaceship."

This song truly does grow on you. I like some of his older songs better. Listen to the words... :)

I agree about the strained voice. Who put him under contract? Either he strains and is too loud or he has that whispery-breathy sound.
At least it\'s short...
Great song, better in person. That recording doesn't do it justice. If you have the opportunity, see him live. :)
ohhhhhh....this is great
I love this song more each time i hear it. the voice definitely takes a few listens to get used to, but I really dig it now. have to buy the disc if i ever manage to have a few extra bucks.
arghhh! this song is being played to freakin\' death!
Great choice. I have been listening to Ellis Paul for years (catch him every time he is in Seattle). Nice to see someone else has been, too.
Like it...a lot!! *...Bless your sweet mistakes...* No mistake adding this to the playlist.
