The words had all been spoken
and somehow the feeling still wasnt right
and still we continued through the night
tracing our steps from the beginning
until they vanished into the air
Trying to understand how our lives had led us there

Looking hard into your eyes
there was nobody I'd ever known
such an empty surprise
to feel so alone

Now for me some words come easy
but i know that they don't mean that much
Compared with the things that are said when lovers touch
you never knew what I loved in you
i don't know what you loved in me
maybe the picture of somebody you were hoping i might be

Awake again I can't pretend
and i know I'm alone and close to the end
of the feeling we've known

How long have I been sleeping
how long have i been drifting alone through the night
how long have i been dreaming I could make it right
if I closed my eyes and tried with all my might
to be the the one you need

Awake again I can't pretend
and i know I'm alone and close to the end
of the feeling we've known

How long have i been sleeping
how long have i been drifting alone through the night
how long have I been running for that morning flight
throught thte whispered promises and the changing light
Of the bed where we both lie
Late For The Sky

Wow really love this
This has been one of my favorite songs since it was released. Great album.

Maybe do some basic research before regurgitating bullshit.
This song was in Taxi driver, very subtle scene with TV..
Just read a song comment on YouTube re this song that was so good I thought I'd share it.
Hoping the writer IAmThePumaMan is OK with that:

I have yet to find another song that so perfectly encapsulates the range of emotions that one goes through as they witness a promising love affair disintegrate. Not just any love affair, of course, but one that you are certain is the best you will ever experience; the one that defines what true love means to you. There is an unspeakable pain that fills you when you reconcile that the future you'd hoped for has somehow been lost and the way back is irreparable. Life is certainly finite, but it can feel like an eternity knowing the one that compliments you in every way is out there, you've experienced them, fallen away from each other, and you will never get the chance to be with them again. I have an almost triggered response for tears to well in my eyes when I hear the opening bars to "Late for the Sky." Every time I hear "Well, the words had all been spoken...", it's like the wound is still fresh.
Argh, and all that high school angst comes flooding back in.

Right—It is a little more than I can take 40 plus years later. Having said that, this song is a masterwork.
Can't keep myself from singing harmony through the whole album ... memorized the words years ago.  Great stuff!

I strongly agree, this is the first time I've heard any of this album played any where but my stereo.

I'm not always depressed, but when I am it's nice to have someone so eloquent to help me along.

Yes, this belongs to my past - but so does Foxy Lady, No Sugar Tonight, and Autobahn. They each have their place in my world.

You know, this would make an excellent pairing with Todd's "Second Wind."

"Family ties
They used to be colors in a rainbow
Now we fly solo
Give me back the passion flower
Give me back the nonconsumer
Give me back my lack of reason
Give me back my sense of humor"
this song still gives me chills

I'm not a big Jackson Browne fan, but I have to say I do like this song so much. Invokes a certain sentimental feeling for me. Thank you JB and RP.

I'm sure everyone has his or her own ideas about which album(s) to start with, but my personal rec is to just start with his first one ("Saturate Before Using") and then go from there in the order in which the albums were released. It's not only methodical, but it's also a great way of hearing how his music has changed and progressed since his debut.  Happy shopping! {#Cheers}

One of my favorite albums - and album covers! - from the classic singer-songwriter era. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for JB, but "Fountain of Sorrow" is his best single work I think.

One of my all time favourite artist. I saw him do a solo show here in Ottawa. It was part of benefit celebration tied to the signing of the land mines treaty. Bruce Cockburn was the host and other performer. He was great and I agree with other regarding his stage persona. I woudl still like to have seen him with the full band.

Its amazing how amazingly lyrical Jackson is (to me). True Poet. The lovely pictures he paints with his words, blended with harmonies always draws me close.

Love this song.

I always love the part in the movie Taxi Driver when this song comes on. It's eerie.
I was a sophomore in high school when this album came out. My friends thought I was crazy when I played it for them. Subtle, tender, musically intricate. My sister turned me on to it. Sometimes it seems stale and old, but other times it really takes me back and seem like a good machine for taking me there.

So what are you saying?  That because the police were there, Browne must be guilty?

Darryl Hannah called the police, accusing Browne of abuse, which she later recanted.  Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

In my sadder and younger days, this song made me weep.  It still tugs at my heart.  The whole CD is so poignant!  Jackson at his best.

Rick started out as the staff cartoonist for Surfer Magazine in the early 60's before moving north to San Fran, where his art really came into its own.  Murphy was one of his beloved surfing characters.  I believe he is another casualty of a recent (5 or so years ago) untimely motorcycle accident.  He lived near the Russian River area at the time.

RIP Rick.

The album cover must have been inspired by René Magritte's wonderful painting: The empire of light (L'Empire des Lumieres) . Check it out!! ;)

Jackson Brown, like Joni Mitchell, doesn't really sing. It's more like whiny reading.
Nice to hear some older Jackson Browne for a change! Thanks Bill.
How long have I been sleeping? How long have I been drifting, on through the night? Indeed! How poignant, how wise.
I was just maybe 12 or 13 when this came out, and it didn't compete with The Beatles, The Who, The Doors, Jeff AP, or Jimi H on the radio or in my friends' brothers' and sisters' record stacks at the time — in fact I don't remember being aware of JB until Running on Empty got burned into every airwave across the land — but it sure sounds good now ('specially after Neko and Hank), and nice to know it hits so many chords in so many listeners who hold it near and dear to their hearts...
OH and LOVE that old beast in that photo... here in the land of Toyotas (have had 2 of those myself) I sure do miss my old '61 Impala (got it from my granny who really DID just drive it to church in Coffeyville, Ks on Sundays!) and an old Cutlass or two I raced around in. Maybe it's true, they just don't make 'em like that anymore! So great to hear oldies and goodies mixed in with the new here!

I live in L.A. and found the house on the cover in the Hancock Park neighborhood. There was a dumpster right in front of the house where the car is on the album cover. So I thought I would go back in a couple of weeks to take a picture of it with my car in front. When I went back those few weeks later, the front of the house had been almost completely torn out in anticipation of a remodel. I think I was probably one of the last people to seek it out before it was basically gone forever.

when I first started listening to RP, I brought up the lack of JB to Bill. I think Bill called it Southern California Angst. Thankfully, he's changed his mind and has added Jackson to the mix.

Right there with you all the way.........Just tugs at you. There's another track on this album (The Late Show) with these lyrics that did resonate: Everyone Ive ever known has wished me well Anyway thats how it seems, its hard to tell Maybe people only ask you how youre doing cause thats easier than letting on how little they could care But when you know that youve got a real friend somewhere Suddenly all the others are so much easier to bear.....
Nick Hornby has written a great essay on this song in his '31 Songs'. Evidently, he came to the album when his long-term relationship was breaking down, and he knew 'Blood on the Tracks' far too well for it to have much resonance for him. Check it out. (click here)
