If you're scared to die
You'd better not be scared to live
I've been spending all my days
Giving all I can give

Last night I heard someone walk in
Through my bedroom door
What they wanted I'm not exactly sure

A friendly ghost is all I need
A friendly ghost is all I need

Marking time on a broken watch
Counting days till the old pawn shop
Sells me back my saxophone
Then everyone's gonna leave me alone

Two times I thought I heard someone
Knocking on the glass
I hid my head and prayed that it would pass

A friendly ghost is all I need
A friendly ghost is all I need

If you're scared to die
You better not be scared to live
I've been carrying round a grudge
Think I better forgive

Last night I heard footsteps walking
On the attic floor
I got up and I opened up the door

A friendly ghost is all I need
A friendly ghost is all I need

A friendly ghost
''(If you're scared to die)''
Is all I need
''(You'd better not be scared to live)''
A friendly ghost
''(I've been spending all my days)''
Is all I need
''(Giving all I can give)''

Not a band, just one guy, Mark Oliver Everett

Would I be considered late to the party if I made a lame and distasteful Unibomber joke about the album cover? I'm too lazy to read through all the other comments
  I checked ... go ahead.

agree - he really speaks to some of us. . .

Either The Eels reminds me of Beck, or Beck reminds me of The Eels.

Contract fufillment remix? I guess everybody's gotta make a buck.

Love this song... E is a brilliant lyricist!

Tried to take your advice! Found precious little, and that under a different spelling, and nothing at all about the father. Wish you would revisit and update your advice.

Yes, I like the song okay, and like the band but the high pitched frequency really hurt my ears and distracted me from enjoying this!

Interesting bio on Mark Everett at the Eels entry at wikipedia. I didn't know he was originally performing as the Man Called E. More of a techno pop/Bowie-esque thing then, it made a bit of a splash on FM alt rock radio back in the 90's when that still existed before Clear Channell came along with its bulldozer and levelled those stations to the ground. I really liked that Man called E record. I had no idea he's an Eel now, no wonder I like these slippery Eels. This guy is quite talented.

this is just one of those songs that can be a 2 or an 8 depending on the day and your mood.
Ha! You nailed it! I think many Eels songs fall under this category...and those that don't force you into a good mood even if you don't want to be happy. Like early morning Sunny Saturday Song.
Not Mr. Everett's best. Why he put a picture of a young Unabomber on the cover with his poodle is a bit of a mystery.
This sounds like a TV sitcom theme song for a new live action Casper abomination.
Uggh. It sounds as if someone's microwave popcorn was done before the recording was over...

I'm sorry to say that I really hated that. The music, the silly lyrics, I just didn't get it at all. Would have changed the channel if it were regular radio.
Diss him how you will, I love Mr. E and his marvelous off-kilter pop songs. I would marry him except I already extended an offer of marriage to David Lowery.

Not sure why this should concern you...you're already stone deaf, obviously. Cool tune from Mr. E and Co.

Is this a song about Casper? It could be as it's just that lame.

Maybe they'll return in Italy?
To truly love EELS you must see them live. Awesome...
His voice drones a bit.
Cute. Makes me want to vomit.
I love this!
EEL
eek
Makes me boogie.

you-all think this is Beck? Funny, I don't hear that at all...
same style of "i'm not really trying to sing" singing, but the similarity ends there for me.
Same here.... wade44 wrote:

I want to hate this, but it ain't workin'!
Is that Beck Hansen singing?
I think I'm falling in love with the Eels.
Hmm...shades of Beck?

This is weird! Back in '02, someone thought it got too much airplay, and then there are no comments from '03 --- did Bill not play it at all in 2003?!? :-s Anyway, this is the first time I've heard this track at all. I like it. Could see it in a set with Elvis Costello's Spooky Girlfriend, maybe... :-k
After reading the comments below it's clear I'm demented......I like this song!

I never get this comparison. Mr. E is the man and the EELS are awesome. A must see live.
Only Casper would like this.

Well, this is certanly exciting. (yawn)
Eels, Eels, Eels, Eels!!!!!
Gettin a lotta play here, its a great song. Check out the rest of the Souljacker CD. Very, very good. Also, Eels have a live cd called Oh What a Beautiful Morning that (I think) you can only buy thru their website. Must have for a big eels fan (and, perhaps, radioparadise.com)! :D
..A different song...is all i need...

Out of my little (but great) iMac speakers too! With good music it just doesn't matter what soundsystem you use, it gets across anyway. Eels keep their music 'small', so maybe that's another reason why it sounds that great out of little speakers.
Kind of reminds me of a happy light version of R.E.M. Really nice song.
My rating just goes up and up the more I hear this. Too cool! Makes me dance in my computer chair. :D
This song always sounds like \"Brand name clothes / is all I need\" to me :)
I like!
