Sights and sounds pull me back down another year
I was here, I was here
Whipping past the reflecting pool
Me and you skipping school

And we make it up as we go along
We make it up we go along

You said you raced from Langley
Pulling me underneath a cherry blossom canopy
And do I have? Of course I have
Beneath my raincoat I have your photographs

And the sun on your face
I'm freezing that frame

And somewhere Alfie cries
And says, "Enjoy his every smile
You can see in the dark
Through the eyes of Laura Mars"

"How did it go so fast?"
You'll say as we are looking back
And then we'll understand
We held gold dust in our hands

Sights and sounds pull me back down another year
I was here, I was here
Gaslights glow in the street ''(flickering past)''
Twilight held us in her palm
As we walked along

And we make it up as we go along
We make it up as we go along

Letting names hang in the air
What colour hair? ''(Auburn crimson)''
Autumn knowingly stared

And the day that she came
I'm freezing that frame
I'm freezing that frame

And somewhere Alfie smiles
And says, "Enjoy her every cry
You can see in the dark
Through the eyes of Laura Mars"

"How did it go so fast?"
You'll say as we are looking back
And then we'll understand
We held gold dust in our hands
In our hands

Totally agree. Bumped it from a 9 to a 10.
have to love someone who lost her music scholarship at age 11 due to "musical insubordination"!

So touching! Tori - is absolutely one of a kind.
Wonderful song.  Great piano, fabulous string arrangement, typical Tori lyrical brilliance.  Solid 10 from me.

But seriously, take any two or three characteristics of a musician and you'll find a hundred others that have those as well.

An achingly beautiful song, straight 10 for me. It's more than sad, it's deeply appreciative of the beauty that was lost, and they lost so much. The whole album works and is my favorite from her, and this song is the perfect ending. It's really well produced too and such a treat on headphones!

I get that her vocal stylings, sometimes experimental and discordant sound, and often down mood can put people off. Many think she's pretentious. I guess that means she pretends to be affected, but I believe that the act is real. She really is that sensitive and in a unique way. If you've heard her wacky interviews, that fits in with her being way out there and looking back in at all of us. How odd do we seem to her, and to each other for that matter? So while it's sad, it's also a perceptive and honest commentary on our various conditions. There is joy to be had too. I'm not sure how to end this, but I'll say she's a challenging artist and well worth the effort if you like any of her work.

Decisions, decisions...
Dammit.

For whatever reason, I've never warmed up to Tori, I've tried. For 25 years. And to have this follow Peter Gabriel — Love To Be Loved (great segue, BTW) just brought me down.
This is too sad...

It's sung by a woman who refuses to dye her hair platin blonde and show off her ass and tits. Gotta be something seriously wrong with that one ...
Beautiful song.

Tori Amos has really grown on me since joining RP. I will definitely purchase an album or two. Thanks for playing a good range of her extensive material.

Beautifully mournful and atmospheric.
this song feels so good. when it stops.

No comparison with Kate Bush. Their voices are in no way similar. You must be thinking of someone else.....possibly Bob Dylan?

Beautiful song ! I'm learning to like Tori Amos thanks to RP :D
Isn't it wonderful that RP keeps tracks like this on the playlist and only drops them in very occasionally like a quick burst of sunlight.

Another reason why I am still a listener after all these years.

Thank you

Beautiful.

Brilliant.
Wow. Magnificent tune. Never heard this on the radio before. Beautiful.

One of Tori's best tracks. Heartbreakingly sad. It's perfect.

I used to love this woman's music. I saw her a couple of years ago, and have listened to her latest work and find it shrill. It's too bad. I really like her eccentric nature.
So beautiful, so Tori!
This is a great song. Thanks or laying it this AM. Stop being haters, people.
Whining emo crap. Please delete.

Tori is rare unique and special!
Tori at her sappy finest
Ahhh....the lovely Tori, beautiful song, thanks for playing....and, more please?
She still has the magic.
Ahhhh...I missed this.
Tori Gold!
Happy Birthday TORI!!! This song is one of my all time favorites. The memories Gold Dust conjures of childhood, loves, and precious moments lost and re-captured is beautiful. Thanks for playing it today!
Tori Amos is 44 today. You probably knew that, Bill.

Such a fitting last track to an incredible album. This song absolutely breaks my heart.

Tori might do well to compose sound tracks for movies, but it would probably be all the same sort of tragic romantic heroine sorta flick.
The way I hear it, her songs are the type I would expect to hear in a dramatic Broadway musical. But also a dramatic movie I suppose. Anyway, decent in that context, but otherwise not the type of music I can listen to every day (hence mute as she's played nearly every day on RP IMO too often ).

Tori is amazing as always! I don't own Scarlet's Walk (I have pretty much everything else -- I'm a sucker for older Tori like Earthquakes and Pink) but I really like this song! What do other people think: Old Tori (just her and her piano) or the newer Tori (with a full band like on Venus)?
I love them both! Different sounds, but same strong songwriting... I even like "Middle Tori," (the bizarre stuff of Boys for Pele) even though I admit that took me a little longer to warm up to. This song is not particularly great, though. Even Tori has dull songs.
I hate this. MUTE
Her 'music' does absolutely nothing for me. I'd call it contemporary pop opera.

Definitely old Tori - but this song is a gorgeous exception

KCRW Morning Becomes Electic.
Although I love RP, living in the greater LA area has been a real treat for the past year as I can now listen to KCRW. The Sounds Eclectic put together by Nic Harcort have a similar angle to RP's playlist. I almost feel spoiled having not one, but TWO radio stations that can do no wrong!

Sure, if you want to irritate people who are here for the music and don't judge artists on quirks of personality.

man...i am breathless. the transition from Erik Satie to this peice....WOW. just brilliant. i am so very glad i found this station.
For all those who are also fans or even the ones who are not and are curious to find out more about what the album or songs are about heres a link to a show that aired December 17th on KCRW Morning Becomes Electic. Just Tori and her piano performs a set of hand picked songs (something I'm sure some of us miss with Tori) and talks about some of the meaning of her songs and her album: https://kcrw.com/cgi-bin/db/kcrw.pl?show_code=mb&air_date=12/17/02&tmplt_type=show
Thanks for the link!....It's still up...I loved this album the way it is but it's great to hear some of the songs as they no doubt sounded when Tori wrote them (before the production- which she also does well). They're just as gorgeous naked.<
Very nice segue from Erik Satie's "Gnossienne N°1" to this song.

Apparently to a lot of people here, beautiful is synonymous with boring. I guess you can't write a pretty song. You have to write something with simple beats and the same three chords to keep from being considered boring or music to nap to. That's sad.
too much tori amos make jeremy a dull boy too much tori amos make jeremy a dull boy too much tori amos make jeremy a dull boy too much tori amos make jeremy a dull boy too much tori amos make jeremy a dull boy too much tori amos make jeremy a dull boy argh. amazing thread... :) actually when I heard the first few notes this morning I thought it was a different song.. I think what I thought it was, was a CSN song don\'t know its name.. whups.. thank you internet.. a quick search finds it.. I thought it was \"To the last whale\" by CSN, starts quiet dark and mysterious.. then the riff changed.. and I knew it was Tori. still liked it anyway.. despite the nay sayers below. (or probably above too!)
A storming set from the Grateful Dead onwards. Respeck!
\"ZZZZZ-Z-Z-z-zzzz!\" Oh, it\'s done? Great, thanks for the nap... Hey how about some more Junkies or Dar Williams or Bjork, or even Morcheeba, fer cryin\' out loud. Tori? BTDT....
This song is beautiful. Thanks RP.
ARGH! GOLD SNOT!
Not the sort of thing to hear during a busy work day, one the most complete and finest songs ever written, deserving of full and undivided attention. Those who complain about it here really should listen late at night to this track in total darkness, with expensive headphones, nice and loud so as to hear the true majesty of Tori\'s perfomance. This song, along with Winter, show what an acomplished artist, musician and awesome talent this young lady truly is.
