You opened up your door
I couldn't believe my luck
You in your new blue dress
Taking away my breath
The cradle is soft and warm
It couldn't do me no harm
You're showing me how to give

Into temptation
Knowing full well, the Earth will rebel
Into temptation
A muddle of nervous words

Could never amount to betrayal
The sentence is all my own
The price is to watch it fail
As I turn to go
You looked at me for half a second
With an open invitation
For me to go

Into temptation
Knowing full well, the Earth will rebel
Into temptation
Safe in the wide open arms of Hell

We can go sailing in
Climb down, lose yourself when you linger long
Into temptation
Right where you belong
The guilty get no sleep

In the last slow hours of morning
Experience is cheap
I should've listened to the warning
But the cradle is soft and warm

Into temptation
Knowing full well, the Earth will rebel
Into your wide open arms
No way to break this spell
Break this spell
Don't tell

It's a metaphor! Have you never been "cradled" by a person who is showing love and affection? And the last line of the song — Don't tell —clearly shows that the protagonist knows he is doing something wrong but is giving in to the urge.

This is a cheatin' song. Two adults. Nothing more.

Yup.  Cheatin song.  But not nothing.  So much more.  Brilliant even.
Neil Finn has a wonderful knack for writing songs that are simultaneously melancholy and joyous.  And with lyrics that are universal but somehow feel very personal.
Just bumped 8 => 9

They're absolutely HUGE in Australia and NZ and have been forever. Have a look on youtube at the farewell concerts they've done at the Opera house and you'll get an idea of how popular they are
Beautiful lyrics and music.

No, I'm hearing it also - but possibly only after you pointed it out.

I don't know why I've never really listened to this song. Or why, today, its genius, lyrically and sonically, finally sank in.  Wow.
c.
A voice you can listen to all day long...soothing and melodic.

I did likewise in New Plymouth. Stunning show, one of the best I've seen.
...and yes, an excellent song :)
I saw Crowded House in Christchurch New Zealand recently, epic. This is one of my favourite songs 🎵❤
They got a lot of play back in their day in Canada. Very well known there.

I rate some songs  1.  This one gets a firm 6.

Hugely well known in Neil's home - New Zealand. and very proud of them.
Crowded House first landed on my radar when I had been a fan of Sting and read an interview with Sting where we was asked "what are you listening to", and he said Crowded House, you've got to listen to these guys, they're among the best groups making albums right now. They quickly supplanted Sting and were among the tapes on heavy rotation on my Sony walkman when I deployed to the Gulf, and today it's among the albums I torture my kids with.

Fun fact: Before Crowded House, Neil and his mates were part of New Zealand group Spit Enz, which charted with quite a few catchy tunes like "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" and "I Got You".
This song describes me and my wife.....fantastic song writing, told from experience.
Incredibly well told story and true
very McCartneyan!

Nice response, Webfoot....and I'll add that the BEST dog I've ever raised (the only puppy to grave dog in my life) was the runt of her litter.....and she was a sweetheart.   And at just under 100 lbs, she wasn't small, just smallish for a Rottie.  Long Live RP and RIP Bella!!

And this song still rates at the 9 level to me...sounds good on this piss-pour-rain-week here in the PNW....hope it's dry in OR...
Still outstanding after all these years🙏

They've sold 10 million albums, so i think they make it beyond RP - but I know what you mean. Desparately underrated, for so long, outside Australasia.

Neil Finn is a brilliant song writer. Simply brilliant.

Saw them live in 1994 while at university. Great concert with lots of interaction with the audience. Better still, when one of the audience members yelled 'get on with it!', Neill got him up on stage if he could do better. The guy actually was a pretty well known musician locally and fitted right in. They totally had a blast on stage. Humble and expert musicians and song makers. Great fan of their work

One of my favorite bands of all time.  So talented.  Beautiful song.

Sister song to Fall at Your Feet.
So hard not to fall into temptation, sometimes...
Then you listen to this song and, carpe diem!

nice segue from "Hard to Explain" by the Cowboy Junkies, Bill.
wonderful song and band... great melodies.
Wow, Crowded House - Into Temptation then Porcupine Tree - Waiting.
Brilliant Bill.
That's why I tune in.
yep kiwi frontman songwriter and kiwi's regard them as a kiwi band but of course aussies will claim any kiwi that has talent as one of their own. Some dont even need to set foot in aus to be claimed by em. Sad innit {#Stupid}

Love Neil, amazing live, saw him in Toronto small venue, he made the management rip down all the advertising banners down from the balcony and walls before he sang...pretty bold for a small dude

I love this song too and I wish I'd made the effort to see CH live back in the day.
Lyrical discussion aside I feel that the world would be just a little bit better if Neil Finn could sing it a lullaby each night.
Always reminded me of Lolita. Lyrically and musically so pretty... one of my few 10s here.

Or perhaps he's feeling guilty because he's already in a relationship.
It's a sad day when all that comes to mind with the mention of a pretty blue dress, is under age girls.

So real... hope I will never live this situation, to fall into temptation. :/
I just saw Neil's latest tour as it stopped in Seattle on Sunday, March 30.  WOW!  A truly unbelievable show (2 1/2 hours).  3 encore sets and the topper was his good buddy, Eddie Vedder showed up and sang 5-6 songs with him.  Great energy and the crowd responded.  I was with my daughter right against the stage with Neil and Eddie right in front of us.  After one song, Eddie leaned over and gave my daughter his guitar pick (a real nice one with his initials on it).  Later Neil came by and shook everyone's hand, who were on the front rail.  One of the best I've seen.  If you have tickets to any of the few North America shows, you are lucky.

Wonderful song.
Absolutely adore this one Bill, BUT 5 plays in the last month makes it too repetitive for me  - particularly when there are so many other spectacular Crowded House / Finn Brothers ballads to play.  Thanks so much, but please rotate thru them all!  {#Cool}

Melody, musicianship, and exquisite vocals; all in all the perfect antidote the the Arcade Fire aural demolition cacophony that preceded it today.
Beautiful song.
Liked this band from that big hit in the 80s, Don't Dream It's Over.  Also got some of the Finn Bros stuff.

Wow Mikey-boy, that's pretty cold, emoticon not withstanding.  Normally I ignore little weasels like you as statistically insignificant "contributors" to the forum and therefore unworthy of rebuttal.  I've decided to make an exception in your case.

Someone who actually cares about how the music is constructed takes the time to put a considered analysis out there for us to compare with our own take on it and you label them pedantic... and pathetic?  You apparently don't realize it, but RP's comments section exists for listeners who want to comment on the music.  Yeah, the music!  Unfortunately, your blithering little juvenile rants invite responses that are considerably more biting and personal than any musical-preference comment.

You like calling people names and denegrating them, don't you?  You've called RP Supporters "stoners", "losers", "haters", "pedants", "posers", "snobs", "fools" and "stupid" — all in the past 5 months.  It looks to me like James_of_Tucson knows more about music than you do and you're just feeling a bit ignorant.  You are, aren't you — ignorant?  You couldn't formulate a thoughtful opinion about a piece of music if it walked up and smacked you on the ass. You want to feel superior to the rest of us but you don't have the chops.  Really, you don't have any game at all, do you Mikey?  You're just a whiny little troll with a penchant for making people feel crappy about themselves.  That's nice.  Now bite me and go away.

Or better yet, show us that your opinion is worth paying attention to and write something insightful, knowledgable and inspiring about a song played here.  Put some actual thought into it - like, more than 5 seconds worth.  Put something of yourself into it that doesn't suck.  Prove to us that you're not as much of a wanker as you appear.  Can you?

I agree.  I love to hear the musicologists' and analysts' comments.   I rail on pedantry too, I admit it. There is a fine line, however, between arrogance and informed analysis.  We want informed analysis, we do not want arrogance.

Beautiful.
