They say Taylor was a good girl
Never one to be late
Complain, express
Ideas in her brain

Working on the night shift
Passing out the tickets
You're gonna have to pay her
If you wanna park here

Well, mommy's little dancer
Has quite a little secret
Working on the streets now
Never gonna keep it

It's quite an imposition
And now she's only wishin'
That she would have listened
To the words they said

Poor Taylor

She just wanders around
Unaffected by
The winter winds, yeah
And she'll pretend that

Well she's somewhere else
So far and clear
About two thousand miles
From here

Well, Peter Patrick pitter-patters on the window
The sunny silhouette won't let him in

Poor old Pete's got nothing, cause he's been falling
Somehow, Sonny knows just where he's been

He thinks that singing on Sunday is gonna save his soul
Now that Saturday's gone

Sometimes he thinks
That he's on his way
But I can see
That his brake lights are on

He just wanders around
Unaffected by
The winter winds, yeah
And he'll pretend that

Well he's somewhere else
So far and clear
About two thousand miles
From here

Such a tough enchilada
Filled up with nada
Giving what she gotta
Give to get a dollar bill

Used to be a limber chicken
Times have been a tickin'
Now she's finger lickin'
To the man

With the money in his pocket
Flying in his rocket
Only stopping by
On his way to a better world

If Taylor finds a better world

Then Taylor's gonna run away

An extremely talented fella. From aspiring pro surfer before losing his front teeth at Pipeline to becoming a musician and making some pretty bloody good surf movies. All that and he's an absolute deadset top bloke
geez, it's about time. he may not be the be all end all but he's definitely got a place in the RP lineup.

pointless
I prefer his big hit "Shoes That Look Like Feet".
I really enjoyed Jack Johnson in 2005.  It hasn't dated that much and I don't find it irritating (as I do James Blunt grrrrrr), but I do think he has made a few LPs too many of the same thing.

I admire his low key, laid back  approach, and see no reason to knock him just because the middle classed surf wanabees picked up on him too.

"Cookie Jar" is still a fab JJ track.

Not sure I agree with your particular method of policing the songboards. But you do have good taste in music. :)

How about you donate $100 anyway, and just enjoy the rest of the music that RP has to offer?

Cheers!

I actually know some that like Jack Johnson, but also quite a lot of other drivel. But seriously... it is not that bad. It is not that good either, it's just background texture.

His Wikipedia entry describes his music as "acoustic soft rock"  Soft rock?  Is that not a contradiction?

This one always throws me off. It starts out like Todd Snider's Statistician Blues. "They say 3% of the people use 6% of their brains 97% use 3% and the rest goes down the drain..."

Perhaps all it will take for you to just enjoy a little good, lighthearted music is a different point of view. I personally love that he was a pro surfer before being a pro musician. He also is happily married and a father. Maybe what you're missing in his music is teenage angst? What I think is fantastic about Jack is his ability to put out a song that you can just nod your head to and enjoy, totally unaware of the serious lyrics he's singing: AMG wrote:
He playfully expounds on America's sickening dependence on material things ("Gone") and its subconscious ill will with today's youth ("Cookie Jar"). Other views on world war ("Traffic in the Sky") and a capitalistic, business-obsessed way of life ("The Horizon Has Been Defeated") are gently reflected upon without reproach. Johnson doesn't need to be an aggressive messenger to get his point across; the monumental sales of Brushfire Fairytales make that quite clear. People are listening to Johnson's musical commentary because he's on their level. He's not a philosophical preacher like his counterpart, Harper. On and On keeps things simple in sound and time. The only noticeable change is that Johnson didn't lyrically restrain himself. There are 17 solid tracks featured on On and On, each one is a spiritual groove rooted in funk and blues. In dire times, Johnson is sunny and sunny always feels good.
jack, rhymes with HACK!
Now's a good time to check out what's going on over at the LRC.
I'm afraid Jack's 15 minutes of fame are over. See you in 5 years in a 'where are they now' special.
Nice, but tame after the Bodeans.
Jack Johnson makes me Zzzzzzzzzzzzz... And not in a good way. It's like accidental ambient.

Funny. When this song ended, I was mentally expecting it to be followed by Al Green's "Love and Happiness". I guess Bill changed his playlist.

First few strums, and I say aloud to my cubicle wall, "Oooh! Who's this?" Click a few links... "Oh... of course." I was hoping it was a new guitar prodigy, as my stale love affair with Jack Johnson just WON'T shake it's numerous layers of dust. I guess I'll still listen; he's mildly salvageable.
time to change the channel. this guy sound like a Sesame Street strummer.
this guy is too good too early. he is unbelievable. every song is listenable.

I hear you, and I agree. This is very pleasant music, perfect for a lazy summer day. Or any lazy day, come to think of it. What's there not to like? Or is dismissing good music as "pusscore" the current flavor of the month, the "cool" thing to do?

we GET him. that's precisely WHY he sucks. badly.
I would agree that much of Jack Johnson's music sounds similar, but that's not a bad thing when it's all good. The same thing could be said about any singer/song writer. They are normally acoutic guitar based songs with the same singer. Thus it will all sound somewhat alike. Sorry if you don't get him. Oh, and as a surfer for the last 15 years, this is truly groovy stuff to listen to on the way to the beach.

There are so many really good JJ songs. . . why overplay this mediocre-at-best tune?

I'm curious, do you pronnounce the "puss" in "pusscore" like puss as in the stuff coming from infected wounds or puss as in the puss in boots? note: even though the urban dictionary gives jack johnson as an example of "pusscore" it doesn't say how to pronounce it. https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pusscore
Total pusscore!
im sleeeeeeeeeeeeeping, jack johnson.... sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeping!!!!
He does this little guitar riff right at the end - every time this song gets played I think it's the beginning of "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" by Steely Dan. Anyone else get that? Am I crazy? TJ

That's enough, Jack Johnson. (Paraphrased from Family Guy).

Fair enough, MD. While I admire his staying power (our original bone of contention), I'm finding his music pretty banal these days. It seems he found a formula and stuck with it, and without evolution artists stagnate in my opinion. So, if it makes ya happy (and even if it doesn't), I'm dropping my rating on this dude, whose surfing clearly exceeds his singing/songwriting. Decent at best.
I don't hate this dude, but I can't tell the difference between most of his songs. WTF?
crap! he shoud stick to surfing...

Drone. Drone. Drone.
I JUST DO NOT GET IT. Jack Johnson does NOTHING for me. I can't deny his talent - his tunes are catchy to me, but just feel hollow. Kinda like most of Dave Matthews Band's stuff - with the exception of Gravedigger. Ho Hum. And some of the stuff that DOESN'T get picked up on RP... I also do not get it....
Roverfish wrote: Monkeysdad wrote: Not only is he trite, but utterly predictable. He will be a memory in 2 years time! Gotta disagree here... If there's a memory to be had, it's for those of us that get to say "I knew him when..." in a few years. Almost two years to the day. Thanks, Bill. So, Monkeysdad, how's Jack Johnson doing these days? Ah, here's a good one: Music's still a 'hobby' for singer Jack Johnson Friday, August 12, 2005 Johnson's laid-back approach to his music -- and life -- belie his success as a platinum-selling star. Since his debut with the album "Brushfire Fairytales" in 2001, his albums have sold a total of about 3 million copies. His latest best seller is "In Between Dreams." Pretty good for a guy who considers himself a surfer first, contributes heavily to the environment and Hawaii, and calls music a hobby. Memory indeed.
Still sucks Mr. Fish...two years later and he still sucks. At least there's still music we do agree on.
his more cheerful music (like this one) is a great accompaniment to the whisper sing (which I also can only take so much of.) A little cheering up is always a good thing.
i don't care what so many are saying! I hear Jack and put my phone on aftercall, lean back and put my feet up on my desk in the almighty cubicle. I may work for the MAN, but this gives me pause for just a couple of minutes.
