The sidewalk bends where your house ends
Like the neighborhood is on its knees
You're surrounded by a chain-link fence
That keeps me out but lets me see
Well I come by most every night
The shutters pounding in the breeze
A clothesline strung like paper kites
That blow my words right back at me
But someday when my heart exhales
I'll tell you everything
These sweet words spilling all about us
I'll say please please be with me
And I'll breathe so easily
But instead I'm turning blue
I look at you
And keep my stupid mouth shut
The hall light streams out through the screens
And the shadows capture me in webs
Just tangled up in what I've seen
And every word I have not said
I have not said
Cuz the sidewalk bends where your house ends
Like the neighborhood is on its knees

Well I come by most every night

There most recent 2 albums (Funnel Cloud - 2009 and Departure & Farewell - 2013) are as good as this one and available on Amazon.
Such a great album. I bought it a few years back on a friend's recommendation, but that's all I've ever heard from these guys. This isn't my favorite song on there, but it's no slouch.

This is factually true:

Loved this album. None of their others quite hooked me like "Rabbit Songs" did, however.

Ahhhh... very nicely put. And I agree.
Sally Ellyson's voice always sounds like a lover's lullaby whispered in your ear as you fall asleep at the end of a summer day. Wow. Love HEM

Me too. I first heard it when I was in the process of getting a divorce, and it is one of the albums that helped get me through a bad spot in my life.
RP introduced me to Hem and I am so thankful.

Typographer Frederic Goudy is famously credited with opining that “Anyone who would letterspace lowercase would steal sheep.” But a few sources claim that his original comment concerned blackletter fonts, not lowercase, and that he used a more colorful verb than “steal.”

This album's cover is not one of Fred's favorites.

This song has been likened to Sandy Denny and the Smiths (two of my favorite artists) but other than all three produce fantastic music I don’t see the similarity between them.

Yes I fully agree with you but their other album I have '' No Word From Tom'' released 2004 just doesn't come up to the standard of this one....

I just love her voice. Kind of a breathy Sandy Denny.
I normally don't like things like this but... there're always exceptions. It's really cute!
More Hem. Ho-Hum . Cute bunny, though :)
I like this! Only recently heard of them and they're growing on me, thanks to RP!
oh. this is good in the morning.

First I loved them with "Half Acre", so I bought this album. Then I found them a bit pasty, so I sold it. Now, every listen draws me back in deeper & deeper and I will be buying it again.
Probably should have copied it!
I've had the same feeling listening to Hem by the album. I think the enjoyment of hearing tHem increases by having their songs interspersed with other music.
No, they do all their own stuff. But I can see the Smiths reference.
Always feel good hearing this...and almost every HEM song.
First had to check to see if this was an obscure Smiths cover...

She has such a beautiful voice meeting her in person could only lead to disappointment. Lovely.
~heavy sigh~ !!
I'll say please please be with me
And I'll breathe so easily
But instead I'm turning blue
I look at you
And keep my stupid mouth shut

Yummy, yummy stuff.
What is this "vinyl" that you speak of?
A bit sing songy but nice
