Don't stand so close to me
Don't be another tragedy
I've burned everybody who had a hand to lend
A man burning at both ends
No one put me in this hell
I lit a fire underneath myself
Now I'm blazing the same old trail back to you again
A man burning at both ends
A dangerous thing to know about
No painless way to put me out
You either make a bed that's cold
Or you're walking barefoot over coals
I regret the things I've done
Bitter words and fiery tongues
And letters burned to smoke and then turned to wind
A man burning at both ends
A dangerous thing to know about
No painless way to put me out
You either make a bed that's cold
Or you're walking barefoot over coals
We ran barefoot through the reeds
Wetted down and with the need
The tide though high and getting higher
Could not put out the man on fire
Look look look look look down your street for me
Look look look look look up your the window please
You'll see a light where before no light had been
A man burning at both ends
Don't be another tragedy
I've burned everybody who had a hand to lend
A man burning at both ends

I thought this was a cover of "Feel a Whole Lot Better" at the intro - same primary guitar riff.

Okay - where's Charlie Sexton's "Burn" here? Come on, Bill... it's a good song! Bring it.... (Please?)

...right, the intro does sound like the Byrds.

I was expecting this to be followed by I'm On Fire (either the original or the Tori cover.)

I almost hate to be the one to tell you this, but you're still confused. The actor was "John Ritter," and the character was "Jack Tripper," not "Jack Ritter."
So does this still mean you can listen to Josh Ritter now?
Yes. No. Uh . . .

Okay, I've finally figured out that the cause of my initial dislike of this guy is that I've been confusing him with Jack Ritter—that fictional fuckhead from "Three's Company," some of the worst pap ever televised. With that now clear, I'll listen more open-earedly.

I hear "Pancho and Lefty" by Townes Van Zandt as well.

I think I saw something about it on CBS' Sunday Morning not too long ago. Interesting.

Love Josh Ritter.Great songwriter.
His new album is a slight change in direction from his earlier Folky albums like this, all good though.
8/10
sounds so much like the boss that i want to vomit.
This isn't the greatest song in the world -- but it IS a good transition from the Frank Black song. 5 for the song, 8 for the transition!
Going to see JR in concert in February. I only know a few songs by him, but those I know, I like a lot. Plus the tickets were only $10... can't pass that up!

Steve Forbert? Forbet? Orbit? Can't remember.
Ahh, yes, another in that long line of "new dylan's"
Steve Forbert is correct...
Little Stevie Orbit was the name of one of his third record...
can hear the similarities...
How about "I Burned My PeePee On Your Antique Radiator" ? Excellent follow-up song!

He's also got some North American tour dates coming up. I'll be catching him when he comes to Indy!
EDIT: Looks like there are some European dates after the US tour!

This song's first musical phrases sound exactly like "Needles and Pins," so I as a deejay would put the latter song on immediately next!
Yes, I caught that too... And what's really weird is I heard Neil Diamond too.

Catch him live if he comes to your town. It's great when you can see his passion for the music in his blissed out, perpetual grin and affable on-stage manner. You could probably even talk with him afterward--he's a nice guy!
Couldn't agree more -- I saw him a couple of years ago at a First Night performance in Boston. The show was full of great songs and he truly seemed like he was having the time of his life up there. It was infectious!

I saw Josh Ritter in Atlanta a month or so ago. Small club. In addition to being a great singer/songwriter, he relates to the audience. See him if you have a chance while he's still playing small venues. Thanks for playing!

every track that I have heard from Ritter so far has been phenomenal.
anybody able to upload his "Harrisburg"? that one is my favorite by far.
Bought this album last month and can't stop listening to it. Love it, love it. Thanks for playing. :D
He sounds kind of Jakob Dylan/Wallflowers-ish. At least, IMO.
