Tom Waits' appeal eluded a lot of people in 1985. Not in the circles I ran in. All my friends suddenly sounded like Tom Waits. One friend, Mark, even named his band Rain Dogs.

I met Tom Waits when I was an extra on the set of Rumble Fish back in the 80s. I really had no idea who he was at the time, but after meeting and talking with him a while (very cool, laid back dude), I decided to check out his music. I became a huge fan of his music and his acting roles. If I met him again, I'd probably make a pretty big fool of myself, gushing and such.

Definately darker than, but probably just about as quirky as Raymond Scott.  I wouldn't mind hearing, "Powerhouse" some time.

Carnivalesque and dreamy some might say. Tom is certainly an acquired taste but he's written some very insightful lyrics if you can get past the initial polyrhythms and discordant compositions.

I dig Tom Waits, but i've got to admit that this definitely sounds like it should be on the Popeye or Pewee's Big Adventure soundtrack actually, anyone who's seen Insomniac with Dave Attell (great show on Comedy Central) should notice that they pretty much ripped this song off for their theme song.

Love him or hate him, Tom Waits is a true innovator. I'm always curious to hear what he has to offer. Rain dogs was a high for creativity. The early years Vols 1 and 2 are, for my money, some of the best of all time in the singer-songwriter genre.
