Pack up all your dishes.
Make note of all good wishes.
Say goodbye to the landlord for me.
That son of a bitch has always bored me.
Throw out them LA papers
And that moldy box of vanilla wafers.
Adios to all this concrete.
Gonna get me some dirt road back street

If I can just get off of this LA freeway
Without getting killed or caught
I'd be down that road in a cloud of smoke
For some land that I ain't bought bought bought

Here's to you old skinny Dennis
Only one I think I will miss
I can hear that old bass singing
Sweet and low like a gift you're bringing
Play it for me just one more time now
Got to give it all we can now
I believe everything your saying
Just keep on, keep on playing

If I can just get off of this LA freeway
Without getting killed or caught
I'd be down that road in a cloud of smoke
For some land that I ain't bought bought bought

And you put the pink card in the mailbox
Leave the key in the old front door lock
They will find it likely as not
I'm sure there's something we have forgot
Oh Susanna, don't you cry, babe
Love's a gift that's surely handmade
We've got something to believe in
Don't you think it's time we're leaving

If I can just get off of this LA freeway
Without getting killed or caught
I'd be down that road in a cloud of smoke
For some land that I ain't bought bought bought.

Pack up all your dishes.
Make note of all good wishes.
Say goodbye to the landlord for me.
That son of a bitch has always bored me.

Can certainly understand why Buffet took from this man's impressive catalog. Easy to imagine Jimmy on stage with this one. I first saw Jimmy back in Ft. Lauderdale in the early 70"s playing at the Coral Reef Hotel. Knew guys who knew Jimmy back in his pot running days.

Hard 8 right out of the gate. Excellent play.

Me too, till today when I go +1 to 9 cuz I'm making up for having NEVER dug into his work before.

Off to the archives!!

Quite nice, this song. First time I heard it. Gotta look for more music of this guy.
Nice lyrics.  Witty and obviously heartfelt.
Koke radio Austin TX mid 70s. Magical music and times.
I know absolutely nothing about this guy except this song. I like everything I know about Guy Clark!
True story:
Guy and Susanna were stuck in LA traffic, trying to get out of town. Frustrated, Guy said something like 'I just wanna get outta here without getting killed or caught'. His muse had struck - he knew he had a song. He rummaged around in the car, found a brown bag and an eyeliner pencil, and wrote it down on the spot.

From an interview I heard some years ago. Rest in peace, Mr. Clark.

One of the best  songwriters  ever . He was a master  at   being able to grab and articulate  a sliver of space and time.
Hard 8 right out of the gate. Excellent play.
Didn't realize this was a Guy Clark song, always thought Jerry Jeff Walker. Love them all but that whole outlaw bunch blurs in my mind. They were a welcome escape from the pervasive disco of the '70s. Thanks for jogging memory lane with us again Bill.
