I saw him live about 30 years ago. He's still the best pianist I've ever seen.  His music was simultaneously energetic and relaxing.  He is missed. RIP
Has a Hava Nagila groove....diggin it !
Надо иметь большое мастерство что бы удерживать внимание публики при игре на одном лишь пианино.
good, but makes me wanna hear the doors version
Having studied, taught and played piano for 45 years I can safely say this is, at best, a mediocre student recital level of performance.

It's a cover.  Robby Krieger borrowed the intro from "Asturias" when he composed "Spanish Caravan".
"Robby Krieger told Rainier Moddemann of The Doors Quarterly that the band was sued for borrowing from a traditional Spanish song with "Spanish Caravan." The Doors were forced to give up some money, but only a little. Krieger explained, 'They didn't get very much, 'cause it's such a widely known thing, but they claimed they owned this little something stupid.'"
Am I missing something here?  I do not hear the Doors.
It's alright. Not "Godlike" like the original, but still listenable. Reminds me of something The Weather Channel would've played (and they used to play his stuff quite a bit). Whether that's good or bad is entirely up to you all, lol.

His actual new age stuff was better than this, of course. "Hummingbird" is an excellent "wind down" song.
Well..at least I didn't have to listen to Jim Morrison.

I'll mostly agree w/ you, coding_to_music - with the slight modification of "this is good" to "this is ho-hum at best"

The Doors were (are?) great!

I am slightly intrigued by the album title "night divides the day" - does Mr. Winston "cover" other Doors' songs too, like "Break on Through (to the Other Side)? (*Edit: answered my own question by looking at the subtitle of the album which clearly says "Night Divides the Day:  Music of the Doors" - so I'll give GW (LOL) props for that.

3 = Ho Hum = my rating on this track.  Thanks for playing it though, BillG - some of the RPs must like it since it has an avg rating of 6.5...  huh. smh

very sweet segue from the albéniz piece, nicely played bill!

He has, somehow, sucked all the life out of it.

Listening to his painful runs has given me the runs...

most definitely not my cup of riojas...

I do appreciate this man's piano playing.  He is totally self-trained and very eccentric.  George Winston came to our school a couple of years ago to show the kids some piano playing techniques.  Very amazing...and never wears his shoes on stage.

He also plays a mean guitar and harmonica!  {#Yes}

I don't think his take on their stuff has a close relationship to the Doors as a band, but more to the music itself. Morrison was all about the primal, pelvic thrusting, pagan like base instinct stuff, psychedelic transcendence and trance states of mind. Winston's music reaches for transcendence but from a western mythological direction; ie - god, heaven and classical music. It's all heading toward trance states but from different directions.

Faking? As in "pretending" to play the notes? My perception is that he is a very creative and talented pianist. I'm a Doors fan AND I own a Winston boxed set. Great stuff when you're not in the mood for Major/Minor.

I'm with you. I cannot fathom all of these negative comments about poor old George.
The only reason I can't give this a 1 is because George Winston can certainly play. It's just the way he chooses to play that makes me feel those little pangs of nausea. I'm sure much of what I like does the same for others... but if I were ever to be sonically tortured to extract information upon which my life or death depended, a few discs of Winston would have me babbling like a baby.
No mas.
George does to the piano what Bush did to the constitution! Any way you slice it, it ain't pretty.
The album cover makes me think of the game "The Cube"

Yes, his recent stuff isn't so good, but his "Autumn" album from the 70's is one of the best pieces of music in any genre that I've ever heard. Some of his other stuff from that era is also quite good. I've seen him in concert several times and he is a very fine musician indeed.

I have only this to add.

The original piece as played by the Doors is a dark passage of pain... The music was inspired by a painting Jim Morrison saw in Spain. It depicted a spanish galleon becalmed in the equatorial Atlantic ocean... in a mad attempt to get more speed from whatever breeze did happen, the painting showed them as they threw all the horses overboard. The lyrics of the original reflect this and I believe it is a masterpiece of darkness... well written and not nearly close to the "over the top"ness of this tripe.

I hear you Oggy, nice point. Winston version of this song is what it is. Nicely played, but ventures into the sacred ground for the traditional Doors fan. I agree with your assesment of the passage being dark. Winston's version is almost too light hearted.

If all of you want a chilling listening experience to play along the lines of Oggy's reference to the spanish galleon and the horses being thrown over board, I highly suggest you check out Celestial Navigations' "Horses", if you do not already know about it. CN features storyteller/actor Geoffrey Lewis, you'll recognize him when you see him n their web site.

I'll not tell you more about "Horses" except it is exactly like the story that Oggy tells above relating to Morrison's expereince viewing the chilling painting of the horses being thrown over board. Despite the sad nature of the story, it is a story of violent retribution that will send a chill down your spine and question your own fortitude to carry out orders and your ability to weld justice in a singlular act of rage!

Here is the link to there web site...

On their catalog page, you want this one..."Celestial Navigaations - Chapter I", it has "Horses".

bump. cuz this needs to be repeated over and over until the song digital file is deleted from all hard drives in Paradise, CA.

in fact, this is very unlike me but I'm calling for a boycott of donations to RP until Bill promises to stop playing this mess. It's such an insult to the original work and the original artist generally.

I think you're referring to Horse Latitudes, on their second album.

Like hearing The Doors at the dentist...
Eye-rollingly lame in its muzak-iness, but also oddly comforting in its familiarity.
No thanks on this version of Spanish Caravan.
Not a Winston fan...
Didn't smoke 'em either!

Pretty ham-fisted piano technique.  Why not just play the original?  This I'm not a fan of.
During the intro, I kept expecting: "First I was afraid. I was petrified. Kept thinkin' I could never live without you by my side..."
Richards' revenge.
Oh no oh no ... not George Winston again. At least a Doors song will be coming up next.
Where are the lyrics? I want to hear lyrics.

does anyone hear ernesto lecuona in this?
He must have been a Doors fan.
I've got a vision of a kid from the Larson cartoons with his tongue out and playing this with two fingers

It is a bit of a stretch and if anyone could do it it would be George Winston..but I still have to give it kudos for being really unusual.

This is a really stupid piece of music.
Look, I've tried to be a good sport about this but RP has just really got to stop playing George Winston. Especially on April Fool's Day, it just sounds like a worn-out, old, ragged, no-longer-funny joke. And PLEASE make the bad man stop smashing the keys like that. He is hurting the piano.

One is commercial while the other is the inside of a man's soul. They don't belong on the same page unless in comparison of opposites.
way too much airplay for a mediocre rendition of a really good song.

Quite vivid, jyoull. Go thee and create a video of these lovely images, accompanied by Mr. Winston's controversial ivory tickling, natch, and upload it to YouTube. I'll be waiting.

Don't know what's so scary about a pianist doing a cover of a rock group's cover of a classical piece. If anything, The Door's cover would be scary - although it's not.
