Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
Night is falling
You have come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping
What can you see
On the horizon
Why do the white gulls call
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All souls pass
Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don't say
We have come now to the end
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping
What can you see
On the horizon
Why do the white gulls call
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the west
Your sweet and weary head
Night is falling
You have come to journey's end

RP shines a light in the darkest of places.
Again, I'm looking for "'Goddesslike".
This might be the most beautiful song my ears have ever heard
bumped up from 8 to 9 . . . goosebumps
Beautiful (Joy to All : )
Annie could sing the phone book and make it beautiful.
She just gets on my nerves now.
Used to think she was great - with the Eurythmics, and her first album.
But she tries too hard now. Enunciating each vowel and emotion. Aaargh

A millions times better than that Emiliana Torrini song on the "Two Towers" soundtrack. I sat through the credits for this one. Several times.

Indeed, but Jackson deserves special mention for his excellent stewardship of the precious source material.
He did an excellent job.
The only criticism that I can even begin to offer is the ending. In the books the Hobbits go back to the Shire to find that Saruman and some humans have destroyed everything so Frodo and the Hob's run them off.
I found that "rebirth" of the Shire to be the prelude to the departure on the ships that tied everything together.
But even with leaving out that one part, the movies were excellent.

...the second two films were significant letdowns, but at least this song closes the epic on a properly cathartic high note...
I regret that I have but 1 vote to cast against this song.

The epochal trilogy is a combined work of many geniuses, Annie is certainly representative.

I'm still so glad that Annie Lennox won an Oscar for this song and so sorry that I missed her when she came to Colorado this last year.

Annie, you've come a long, long way since the 80s. What a great body of work.
Stunning.

What A wonderful voice. I could listen to Annie all day
I love this, though it drives my hubby and daughter nuts.
Wow.
Crying again. This song does it every time.
I love her voice...
Annie can do NO wrong in my book... absolutely love her!

Ok... I have a confession: I watched the American Idol Gives Back tv special. There I said it. Every one of the guest musicians sounded practically retarded, until Annie too the stage. She was, and always is, flawless!

Nicely put! Absolutely!
(Is this song on any of her solo CDs?)

I am glad to hear she's so cool, her more recent album 'Bare' is so cool and very much a 'keeper' in the collection
Thanks Bill! I have a new song to play for my little boy!

My wife waited on Ms. Lennox and entourage at a restaurant (anyone remember "The Good Earth" chain?) about 25 years ago and says she was quite an agreeable person, very gracious and pleasant.
She still is that ... Anne was here recently and went from office to office at a certain large studio thanking people and chatting she ended up having lunch up the street at the music row cafe ... she demonstrates the exemplar of a world-famous artist who is also a warm and caring human being.
BTW, put Anne and a certain young lady named Alecia Beth in the same room with microphones and you laugh until you pee yourself.
All hail JRR Tolkien and Peter Jackson...and Howard Shore's fantastic score is always worth a hearing. I disagree with the person who said it was all CGI nonsense...what the hell should a movie based on a fantasy novel use to realize the images described, an army of Walt Disneys wielding paintbrushes? I thought Jackson did a really good job of translating JRRT's vision to the screen, CGI and all.

What a voice! Go Annie! Into the West!
Mmmpf ... ehh, just a bit literal for my tastes. Not particularly subtle, spreading it on a bit thick, etc ... makes me want to poke a hobbit, too.
...annie lennox brought the vocals, but really howard shore deserves at least as much credit here...the lord of the rings films offered him a latter-day opportunity to compose his wagnerian cycle, and while the success of its middle portions might be debated, i don't think anyone can argue that he really brought it home in the end...
Love these soundtracks, but I actually prefer Gollum's Song from The Two Towers to this one.
Regardless of that, a good song and a great performance on this one.
She is quite simply amazing.
THANK YOU.

Until her work on LotR, I think I had only heard the one "broken glass" song that got a lot of radio airplay.
Didn't expect to hear this on RP. Looks like it's been a year and a half.
I love these soundtracks - I used to use them when I was doing battle with engineering problem sets.
This song, along with Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah and Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, is on my short list of perfect songs.
Whelp, that was great. Now it's time for me to get back to work... OVER THE HORIIIIIIIIIIIIIIZOOONNNNNNNNNN.
Ouch.
Just missed it this time...
Luckily, I own the CD(s)
*sigh*
Still, thanks for playing it.
"I will not say 'Do not weep',
for not all tears are an evil..."
Her voice is stunning. Perfect clarity.
yes - goosebumps - Into the west --> https://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.asp
I loved her music with Eurhythmics but this seems to be even better. For me definitely a 10 !
And the movie is great. I never thought it is posible to make a satisfying movie out of one of the best books I ever read.
Lovely

Don't be embarrassed. Good of you to admit it, and welcome to enjoying her. Annie's one of a kind, and this tune illustrates just what she's capable of. Simply amazing.
a wondeful voice, a good tune, and it worked excellently in the movie, but all alone with virtually no background instruments this song just doesn't hold up.
Annie Lennox is just so wonderful, and I only figured it out a couple of years ago. How embarrassing.

Indeed! Queen Annie, I never even heard this one.
Is this the poem you are speaking of, or your own words? Either way, they are lovely. Thank you for them.

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her, until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud, just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!"
"Gone where?"
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side, and she is just as able to bear her load of living fright to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says: There, she is gone!" there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: "Here she comes!"
And that is dying.
very nice, I love the open spaces in the song.

It is precious to me...
Please, make it stop.

Lovely song--great trilogy of movies.
Had to bump my rating to an 8
That movie was pure idiocy. The singer is an artist and does a good job, very nice, but my god, how can I be moved with that huge agglomeration of computerized superficial nonsense. --the movie, anyway.
:^o
Saw her with Sting in Toronto. Love, love, love Annie.
I only don't get how I might have missed THAT many previous playings of this piece. No idea it would be played here. TOTALLY worth the contributions I have made.
People, you have to read these books...
Then there are songs that are just so emotional.......like this one..reminds me of a poem by Henry Van Dyke about dying.

I have to agree. Only Annie could make this song acceptable. The song is just entirely too full of itself. It's saved from the land of the "2", only because of her voice.
Frankly, too, I have to agree with Grantus. The instrumentals for this movie were outstanding, and some of the other vocal tracks were, I thought, wonderfully in line with that. This song really doesn't even fit the feel of the rest of the movie. Just not impressed. :|

But. . .it could probably be arranged. . . :-k
I liked Elizabeth Frazier (ex-Cocteau Twins singer)'s and Renee Flemming's contributions to these soundtracks much more. Never was a big Eurythmics fan anyway, but my studying Quenya (elvish) might have something to do with it. . .

I love this song and her voice singing it.
It just seems to reach right in and touch your soul.
Perhaps, having had death close to home, I am overly-sensitive.
I can live with that.
This song is absolutely incredible. My god, just powerful. Goosebumps.
