The question is wouldn't mama be proud?
There's a silver lining in the corporate cloud
And the pretty post that you're taking as an, as an NCO
Of the great pretender, I should sure think so

Wouldn't mama be proud?

"Can I take your order?" asked the heavenly host
Ticket to the jet stream blowing coast to coast
The long stem glasses, a movie and a pleasant dream in midair
"You gotta tell me quickly, 'cause we're almost there"

Wouldn't mama be proud?
Pointed out of the window
At the sky gone black
"Kid, you're on the right track"

If I send you postcards from the side of the road
Photographs of moving parts about to implode
If I called to keep it together like you say you know I can't do
To transmit the moment from me to you

Wouldn't mama be proud?
Wouldn't mama be proud?
Wouldn't mama be proud?
Wouldn't mama be proud?

Great story, now please go listen to some Justin Bieber.
Love this even more as the years go by.
My sense of him is indellibly linked to a video I saw of him on the pilot of proposed Jon Brion TV show.  Even at his happiest he seemed such a sad young man.

he could intone the white pages and I'd love it.
FTW!!!
mute? MUTE? I'll mute myself this time....you... you....  {#Dancingbanana}dancing banana, you.

Sadly, the OC featured some pretty good artists, such as Modest Mouse, Spoon, Deathcab for Cutie, Imogen Heap, and Silversun Pickups. So one might take that as more of a compliment than you trying to be down on Elliott Smith.
Don't forget Sufjan. Sadly I liked the O.C. music and all. Does that make me any less of a intelligent/respectable person . . . hmmmm i think not. - maybe a little dorky though.

This sounds like an OC soundtrack. Laguna Beach angst.

Now if I could find as much entertainment with my two kids arguing over whether to watch Spongebob Squarepants or How its Made.
...how it's made; spongebob's only good for its theme song... ...oooh - upload idea!..
A most amazing album! These are musically genius as well: https://www.elliottsmithbsides.com/

I appreciate your apptitude with Google, but I don't need to do research to form an opinion of music.
You don't have to consider music in context but when you compare Elliott Smith to the OC and Laguna Beach you look like a dumbass. pannaramma wrote:
And I believe we are all entitled to express our opinions here without being insulted.
Entitled? Sure, you're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to tell you to kiss my ass.

A friend turned me on to this guy about a year ago... I was so sad to hear that he's no longer with us. What a shame, this guy's got talent!
that voice... such a beautiful resignation
A person doesnt have much control over the physical voice they were given, but he/she does have authority over their words and their intellectual "voice". This guy to me has a young and innocent voice, but the words dont match that image, they are more introspective. When I think adolescent bands and vapid teens, I think panic! at the disco and the All American Rejects. That crap isnt played here and may it never be.
One of my favorite Elliott Smith songs. They are all so wonderful, it's hard to pick just one :)

Is it possible NOT to notice that? Has anybody noticed that the sky the the ocean are roughly the same color? Great song, indeed, however.
LOL!

Some people don't have a clue. Never get it and never will...

Sounds like he wants to be Simon & Garfunkel.

Has anyone ever noticed that R.I.P. is spelled the same as "rip"? "Elliott Smith is no longer with us. Riiiiip!" Great song.
To quote Bill Schonely: "Rrrrrrrip city, baby!"
Elliott is always welcome.

You're right if... 1. You mean to say that this is more the case with Figure 8 than with any of Elliott Smith's other releases, though if that was your intent, your wording was quite inartful. 2. Your experiences as a 10-13 year old were unlike those of most people. 3. You ignore the lyrics entirely.
Nice retort. Elliott was definitely approaching musical genius...
Lovely -- just when we were all longing for Elliott after the Peyrouxian.
I listened to this album almost continuously during a difficult period, and I'll always have a soft spot for it. Lovely.

excellent song, excellent album. Missing Elliot...
Elliott rocks!
aaaaahhh! thats better !!! madeline who?
I gotta join those thanking RP for being introduced to Elliott Smith. How sad he left so early. But as others stated, in his music he will continue to live on. I am noticing that his songs, like those of other great artists, just improve with repeated listening. Anyhow, sorry I missed him here in Portland.
Yet another great artist that Radio Paradise has turned me onto. Elliot was a great artist who will be greatly missed. And yet a little of him lives in me (and will forever). Beauty of music. Has a special life than transcends even death. Its only defining factor is memory.

Yes. Yes. Yes.
Man oh man... so cool! Love the Al Kooper style organ too...
Smith at his finest!

Excellent song from my favorite artist. R.I.P
THANK YOU :grouphug.gif: A+!
I firmly believe everything happens for a reason. Does anyone feel that it is uniquely...meaningful when a gifted artist/voice is silenced? Perhaps it is JUST for inspiring others to strive to attain excellence. Speculation on how their careers WOULD have gone gives us hope that super stardom is possible ...if we put ourselves to it. Not even that this would have been THEIR goal, they always seem happy just to make music...
