Somewhere there's speaking
It's already coming in
Oh and it's rising in the back of your mind
You never could get it unless you were fed it
Now you're here and you don't know why
But under skinned knees and the skid marks
Past the places where you used to learn
You howl and listen
Listen and wait for
The echoes of angels who won't return
He's everything you want
He's everything you need
He's everything inside of you that you wish you could be
He says all the right things at exactly the right time
But he means nothing to you and you don't know why
You're waiting for someone to put you together
You're waiting for someone to push you away
There's always another wound to discover
There's always something more you wish he'd say
He's everything you want
He's everything you need
He's everything inside of you that you wish you could be
He says all the right things at exactly the right time
But he means nothing to you and you don't know why
But you'll just sit tight and watch it unwind
It's only what you're asking for
And you'll be just fine with all of your time
It's only what you're waiting for
Out of the island and into the highway
Past the places where you might have turned
You never did notice
But you still hide away
Anger of angels who won't return
He's everything you want
He's everything you need
He's everything inside of you that you wish you could be
He says all the right things at exactly the right time
But he means nothing to you
And you don't know why
I am everything you want
I am everything you need
I am everything inside of you that you wish you could be
I say all the right things at exactly the right time
But I mean nothing to you and I don't know why
And I don't know why
Why
I don't know
It's already coming in

Yes! I remember listening to this, crying and singing along, after a bad breakup. "But I mean nothing to you and I don't know why." Brutal.
I'm fascinated by the polar comments: it appears either one loves VH, or is appalled. Personally, Everything You Want was on auto repeat for hours, belting out the chorus at the top of my lungs. Someone noted teen angst in their note, I get that, but for me, it was more of a declaration that the person I wanted to be also scared me and I turned my back on that part of my personality. 30 years later, I'm no longer, and I still belt the chorus out at the top of my lungs, in defiance.
Peace out, friends!

With a name like Vertical Horizon, can you really blame them for being sort of safe and mildly forgettable?

It's always fun for me when the songs that were deeply meaningful to my angsty self twenty years ago make an unexpected appearance on RP. I love the inclusion of this onto the playlist.
Still liking this after all these years.
Truly Awful
I don't know why this song has such a nostalgic pull on me.
One of my favorite bands. Nice to hear them played here on the best radio station on the planet.

Come on, man, there are probably more relevant things to wonder about than Neil Peart's musical tastes.
A few years ago I read Neil Peart's autobiography and it was really interesting.
One interesting thing I learned was he never really got The Beatles, which is fine, I guess.
But then he also spent a lot of time talking about how great Vertical Horizon was.
This song reminds me I sometimes really wonder about Neil Peart and his musical taste.

Sounds like something you'd encounter in the midst of a teen angst filled melodrama on the WB
If the Smashing Pumpkins were less annoying they would turn out tunes like this. I like it a lot.

Good comparison; I agree. It's funny, because I've been fans of Vertical Horizon for years (since the early 90's), and their sound definitely changed on this album compared to their earlier stuff. Their first few CDs were very folky acoustic stuff; with this release, they definitely went way more pop / commercial. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I don't know that I've seen another band reinvent their sound as much as VH did.
This reminds me of Duncan Sheik, I would love to hear Duncan more often, he had a couple of great records!!

If the Last Play date is to be believed, I wasn't listening to RP last time this was played ... were there not listener ratings in 2000? I'd have expected more of them, if so.
Sounds rather formulaic.
Wow a long time this one hasn't been played and no comments to boot. This was a solid record.
Oh this song is fine, one of those songs where it is not the songs fault they overplayed it. Still only want to hear about once every decade or so though.
Gotta hand it to RP. There's something here for everyone so long as you listen long enough. This ain't necessarily it for me but....funny how my foot wags in time to its beat... ;-) Ah teenage-styled angst type music. It's tolerable though I've got to say been there, Done that. Moved on. Now...stop it! Stop moving foot! And wonder who it is that's playing "head or tails?" with the lass on the cover art? Heh!
Ick.
Bland grunge.

dumb lyrics, annoying melody. I think it's only caught on because of the exhaustive repetition.

This band is actually extremely talented. Can't blame them for scoring commercial success - that is the goal. Sure, it is tough to tell wheat from chaff in the sad age of modern manufactured hits. Look into the members of the band when this CD came out, listen to their older stuff. Very good. So, they put some money in the bank with this single. Everybody needs dough. The drummer at this time (Ed Toth) is with the Doobie Brothers, now, FYI.
won tickets to see them in a private showing when they first came out with this single. liked them, but I think this was almost a one hit wonder.

The lyrics seem to echo the general sentiment here about the song--nice pop hit but nothing terribly deep or memorable. A manufactured moment.
Thought the radio station had mysteriously changed when this song came on. First time I've muted RP. Contains all the annoying aspects of pop without any redemption.

This song was better when I was an angsty teenager. :-/
this is not everything i want nor anything i need :whip:
I've always enjoyed Vertical Horizon's earlier work, and this album, while sometimes overplayed, is still good, dispite changing a little from their roots. Having not listened to the radio in a while, though, hearing it here was nice in that I haven't hear this song or album in a while.
this song tugs at me...it is a good theme song for my last attempt at a relationship...she liked me and all, but had no intrest in getting any deeper than close friendship...it sucked because I love the hell out of the woman and her cute daughter.
story of my life I guess

smidge... try excessive. This song is now being played on some clear channel station somewhere 24/7.

i new before i clicked in here the kind of mixed reaction this song would get. i'm similarly ambivalent -- but it really is a good song, isn't it? one of the very few examples of a pop-song that works (despite being played every 45 minutes for weeks on end a few summers ago...)
Yep - a nice tune. Are there a couple of versions of this?
Not a bad song. A smidge overplayed, though.
yeah this is kind of a pop song. but it's a good one. i remember when this was new. i didn't like it at first, but it's grown on me over time.
thanks for this one.
Not a bad song. A smidge overplayed, though.
The real question is whether it's better than Ezra.
