Will you say when I'm gone away
My lover came to me and we'd lay
In rooms unfamiliar but until now

Oh oh oh oh, until now
Oh oh oh oh, until now

Will you say to them when I'm gone
I loved your son for his sturdy arms
We both learned to cradle then live without

Oh oh oh oh, live without
Oh oh oh oh, live without

Will you say when I'm gone away
Your father's body was judgment day
We both dove and rose to the riverside

Oh oh oh oh, riverside
Oh oh oh oh, riverside

Will you say to me when I'm gone
Your face has faded but lingers on
'Cause light strikes a deal with each coming night

Oh oh oh oh, coming night
Oh oh oh oh, coming night
Oh oh oh oh, coming night
Oh oh oh oh, coming night

Bearded Jim Carrey sings pretty good.

Did these guys do a song about fire trucks for Sesame Street?

You, sir, have no idea how many days I spend with that fireman song in my head.  I had no idea anyone remembered it.  Probably haven't heard it since I was five.

"What does the fireman ride on, when he's going to the fire?  The firetruck, the firetruck, the firetruck..."
[snore]
Great abum

I agree - the lyric/breath ratio is awful. Alas all too common, and has been a production trend for several decades. Breathing is not a musical sound and does not equate to emotion. Sing (rather than vocalise) further from the mic! Upping the treble accentuates it, and for me detracts from the performance.
ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response)...with a banjo twang
Is this satire?
Never heard an Iron and Wine song that I liked or didn't sound like EVERY other Iron and Wine song. Sorry,  a one from me.
The vocals are a bit too clear. A little too close to me, hear? I don't need to feel your breath. Your tongue in my ear.
It's pleasant but I would never buy it.
Really appreciating that rp is so nicely pitched at my mood this morning

Depressing? This is one of the most uplifting songs I've ever heard!
It may seem dark at a glance- as life often does, but note the twist in the ending:
"... light strikes a deal with each coming night."

That Sam sure knows his way with words. 10.

I'm with you, slippery. I'll never understand why people insist on categorizing anything that's not a rocker as "depressing", but whatever. Great, mellow tune.

This song makes me understand the 'endless numbered days' of the album title...

Please, people, live - or if you must kill yourselves, do so in private?
A truly depressing, non-testosterone, God-awful song.  An ideal song to tie a rope to the ceiling.  Can not stand listening to this, otherwise, I will hang myself.

It's the sort of song that would go down well during the last spliff of the day, or a wee single malt nightcap before settling down to bye-byes. Pleasant enough I suppose, but there's a fine line between elegaic and dull and I&W regularly tread it. An auto-rated 3 from the increasingly somnolent Nottingham jury.

Nickelback is probably more your type of music.

still way to mellow for Monday afternoon...

Ideal song to go make a pot of tea to. I don't mind missing this one.   Argggh !!!{#Yawn}
A gorgeous flow to the mind and ears. This is what dipping your toes into a creek on a warm summer day with the one you love sounds like. Sam's sound has a wondrously invasive quality that sticks to your soul.
this song is way to mellow, I know it's a Monday morning...but God...

Simon and Garfunkel on valium as they are tying the rope to the tree that they are about to hang themselves from before the local townspeople can catch up with them and tear them limb from limb for making them depressed.

Try four decades ago.   {#Hand}
Nondescript vocals, nondescript lyrics and nondescript accompaniment. Result is ouch.

Go watch some Spike TV for awhile, then check back.
I thought it was Sufjan Stevens!

Hahahaaaaa, I do hear a lot of bango, bang, bang, bang Oh, but seriously folks, I don't hate this song at all but it sure leaves itself open for people to come up with hilarious disparaging remarks

I love hearing Iron And Wine on RP, but I made the mistake of buying this album. Truly, if you've heard one song, you've heard 'em all. Talk about too much of a good thing.
Enjoy them...but could definitely see that happening. Good advice
Good as far as lethargic indie rock goes, even if I'd never listen to it on purpose. I'll give it a 6.
God do I hate this song!!
This song is putting me into a coma. Not a good choice on a rainy Monday.

I really like Simon And Garfunkel but im not too sure about this... having said that I dont want to switch it off! arrgh!
Beautiful. The imagery in the lyrics blend perfectly with the mood of the music.
Love this track; the lyrics are so poignant and always make me sad. And yes, see them live. They are wonderful live. L
I can see the comparisons to Simon and Garfunkel, even John Denver, but the lead voice here isn't as strong.
I saw "In good company" on a plane recently and was struck by the quality of the soundtrack. Iron & wine makes up a large part of it. I had never heard them before. Nice chilled out tunes :)
All the breathy, whispering and gasping of the Iron & Wine vocal has distracted me from a real listening to their work, with the unfortunate effect of preventing me from hearing what may otherwise be worthy lyrical content. Isn't this how people without much to their voices "sing" to mask the absence of a singing voice?
Lost in translation in the Garden State? That can happen... Excellent tune.
I'LL tell you what this is reminiscent of: John Denver. The backing guitar is almost a carbon copy of "This Old Guitar." Sounds great.

exactly how I feel... on both comments.

Nobody. But these guys are not that. Similar, yes...wannabe? No...these guys have wonderful playing and singing.

This is the second song from this album I've heard on RP, both beautiful, nice folky simple music. Really nice.
Verses are awesome but the chorus is missing something, musically speaking. Still, really good.

pretty decent stuff, but it just doesnt live up to all the hype... many better, more distinctive, more worthy underground / indie singer-songwriters out there, imho. let's hear some Hayden or Matt Pond PA.
I am actually feeling sick, tired and weak so maybe that's why i like it. catmaven wrote:
