I agree - the lyric/breath ratio is awful. Alas all too common, and has been a production trend for several decades. Breathing is not a musical sound and does not equate to emotion. Sing (rather than vocalise) further from the mic! Upping the treble accentuates it, and for me detracts from the performance.

Depressing? This is one of the most uplifting songs I've ever heard!

A truly depressing, non-testosterone, God-awful song.  An ideal song to tie a rope to the ceiling.  Can not stand listening to this, otherwise, I will hang myself.

It's the sort of song that would go down well during the last spliff of the day, or a wee single malt nightcap before settling down to bye-byes. Pleasant enough I suppose, but there's a fine line between elegaic and dull and I&W regularly tread it. An auto-rated 3 from the increasingly somnolent Nottingham jury.

I saw "In good company" on a plane recently and was struck by the quality of the soundtrack. Iron & wine makes up a large part of it. I had never heard them before. Nice chilled out tunes :)

All the breathy, whispering and gasping of the Iron & Wine vocal has distracted me from a real listening to their work, with the unfortunate effect of preventing me from hearing what may otherwise be worthy lyrical content. Isn't this how people without much to their voices "sing" to mask the absence of a singing voice?
