I had tender feelings that you made hard
But it's your heart not mine that's scarred
So when I go home I'll be happy to go
You're just somebody that I used to know

You don't need my help anymore
It's all now to you, there ain't no before
Now that you're big enough to run your own show
You're just somebody that I used to know

I watched you deal in a dying day
And throw a living past away
So you can be sure that you're in control
You're just somebody that I used to know

I know you don't think you did me wrong
And I can't stay this mad for long
Keeping a hold of what you just let go
You're just somebody that I used to know

They don't have the same lyrics ... at least not as posted on RP.  I adore the Gotye tune, and will listen to this one a bit more carefully next time.

You suffer from that, not him. I suspect that he's not suffering anymore from anything.

I spent three years obsessed with Elliott Smith.  This is probably my favorite album of his.
I love this tune and artist, but the over modulated rhythm guitar kind of kills it a bit for me. Sigh...

{#Yes} what casey said

My god this is so good, favorite of mine for many years...

Did they ever figure out what happened? I don't know how you 'pull the plug' by stabbing yourself. Last I heard it was listed as a homicide. Regardless, a bummer.

Seppuku?

A great break-up song.
"Smith suffered from depression, alcoholism, and drug addiction, and these topics often appeared in his lyrics. At age 34, he died in Los Angeles, California from two stab wounds to the chest." wiki

I just read the whole Wikipedia entry on him.He was clean at the time of his death.

I am looking forward to when your songs are uploaded here.  I am anxious to compliment you on how much better you are than Elliott Smith.  I am certain no one would criticise in such a negative manner as you've done if they weren't able to do at least as well themselves.

PS: Thanks for correcting me.  I was making the mistake of enjoying his music and lyrics.  I'm not advanced enough to recognise puerility without the assistance of someone with more musical ability than I so your constructive criticism is just what I needed.

Whoa pump the brakes buddy.

Yes, why do these things always happen to YOU?

Pretty sure this one is still technically unsolved, although evidence point to self-inflicted.

I saw him talking with his parents in front of the tour bus after his show for this album at the 9:30 club in DC. When we thanked him for a great show, his parents beamed proudly, and he just nodded his head and turned away. He struck me as someone who was never very comfortable in his skin, and you could almost feel the waves of love and concern his parents felt. I think of them when I hear his music now.

This sounds puerile at best.
Elliott seldom disappoints...and this one is no exception!

Not really. It was "left open" officially, but pretty much called a suicide by the authorities. Agreed that it's incredibly suspicious, but people have done such things in fits of grief or rage. The world may never know for sure.
