Reality, it burns
The way we're living is worse
The pillars of inspiration are all falling down
The clean up won't work
While the fallout goes on
And it's now or never, too close to the latter
We're all living proof that nothing lasts
Standing in the neutral zone
Living on sleep deprivation
The rural route sleeps
While the city bleeds all over itself
Over the falls in a barrel
Is where the answers have gone
And it's now or never, too close to the latter
We're all living proof that nothing lasts
And it's here for now, transient tomorrow
We're all living proof that nothing lasts
The Mother Road remains
But it provides no more
It can only take us away
Southbound
You can taste the weather
It feels like home
Now or never, too close to the latter
We're all living proof that nothing lasts
Here for now, transient tomorrow
We're all living proof that nothing lasts
The way we're living is worse

Blech, in my opinion. Ick.

My affinity for Sun Volt has been an acquired taste ... like learning to like scotch.

I just do not care for this band. I think it is the annoying nasal voice of the lead singer. Very hard to listen to.

Great song by one of the most underrated bands out there. Better than Wilco in my opinion, but then, I like rock'n'roll!

'We're all living proof that nothing lasts'
not the best song off of a great album.

Was there a song there? All I heard was distorted guitars. Or maybe it was supposed to sound like a bunch of cats fighting?

Kids these days! Always making noise and calling it music! Damn whippersnappers!

Doubly agreed. One of the worst bands I've heard on this station.

So, first time you've heard rock and roll music?
Not better than Wilco but right there!

Wow, really? I don't often argue against musical tastes but you just don't get music, do you?

IMHO, much of Jay's work is this real, even the very latest. All Son Volt albums are continually in my top 5%, and the MP3 players have not been void of some Son Volt since, well, since they were invented. That said, Trace is the best, just barely, by a chord.

yes.....very truthful lyrically, and you can tap your foot to it....i give it an 8!
I've always thought it was some sort of cosmic mistake that after Uncle Tupelo split in two it was Wilco who ended up being the household name while Son Volt had to settle with just being critically acclaimed, loved by fans and highly respected by fellow musicians. The three albums they recorded (before the long break and recent reforming with different members) were all absolutely excellent. I checked the RP playlist, this is just one of a handful of Son Volt songs in there. There could easily be a dozen or more.
That REM segue has me asking, "What's the frequency, Jay?"
groovy, rootsy--is it just me, or does this have more cojones than anything wilco would ever think of doing? 7.

You wrote this in Nov. 2004 but I just now discovered it . Thanks for the link. Love it.
All this is is noise.....
a pretty voice would just muck up the nasty rock vibe of this tune. down and dirty, when it's right.

I thought it was terrible in the first 5 seconds. Horrible singing, guitarists randomly attacking their guitars. I wanted to give it a 1 as quickly as possible as well.
At least we can take consolation in the fact you also rated Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead at 1.

You'd think you might give it a little wiggle room ... I mean, what if you end up liking it even less as time goes by? There's no way to go down. Then again, perhaps it would only confirm your original, gut feeling.
hey, good point. We'll see what happens. Oh, and in my defense, the song had started playing when I rated it.

One of my uploads! Rock on Jay, Jeff and all alt.country.
Not my favorite Son Volt tune, but a nice change on RP just the same.
