C.G.P. = Certified Guitar Player. Now who do you suppose bestowed that title upon him? How many other guitarists hold that title? It's a very short list.
Tommy Emmanuel, for one.
I think I sprained my foot.
That's how you play that damn thing, I guess.
You Bet!
Oh. I was thinking of Claude Atkins the actor.
Claude Akins. 🤣
Nov cover of Guitar Player by ~jasonseiler

I can finally post the work I did for Guitar Player magazine. This was a killer to do because I only had a four days to complete the cover. It was nuts, had to pull an all nighter, drank many Monster energy drinks, and the rest is history! I'm really happy with how Zappa's guitar turned out, even though it was a lot of work. Zappa has a distinct SG, very unique and personalized, so when painting his guitar I knew I wasn't going to get away with just painting any old SG, it had to be his . . . with all the nicks and scratches, the whole SHA-BANG!
Excellent work!
Have to say I’ve never seen the commercial folks keep referring to…. And it’s just as well.
I like it as is.
Good point Jas. I have never seen the car commercial, and I listen to a lot of RP. For me, this song is an unadulterated delight.
This song is amazing, but completely wrecked by the douche-bro ad men who thought it would be a cool idea to run auto insurance commercials with this song, ad nauseum. F*** you, douche-bros, F*** you, capitalist swine, everything you touch, you ruin.
Is one solution to watch less TV and listen to more RP?
Incredible talent. I only have one Chet Atkins album - a duo with Mark Knopfler, called "Neck and Neck", abt 1991. I have to buy more.
Neck and Neck is highly recommended!!
Couldn't have done it without permission. Why don't you want Chet's family to make a living?
For me it was the commercial that got me interested in this tune. So that can't be bad. It was the same for me and the Volkswagon commercials when they used Pink Moon. Nick Drake wasn't really on my radar before then so it was the commercial that opened my eyes/ears to an artist/tune that I didn't really know much about before.
I mean c'mon... can you really bash advertising when someone is shrewd enough to pick a good tune?
My only question is what happened to all the advertising jingle writers? You never hear an original tune anymore.
some tasty Chet Atkins tune. Thanks BillG

You can't come to conclusions without data/information.
In my experience, the lack of data/information has not stopped many people from arriving at conclusions.
One of the weirdest things about (trying to) avoid 'news' is that I still get a sense of what's going on based on the vibe I get from people. And a few months ago, there was an ICE raid in my western Washington (i.e. almost as liberal as it gets....) neighborhood and I knew that happened just by the look of major concern on the faces of EVERYONE who looks a bit brown (me included) - and my darling wife has kept me appraised of what's been going on, much to my dismay.
It isn't as much that I'm hiding my head in the sand as me actively wanting to SHUT OUT the noise and come to my own conclusions. Which isn't the point of this forum though I appreciate communicating with people (like you two) and knowing that music can heal a lot of pain, or at least be a soft spot in this hard world. Long Live RP and PEACE!!

If you ever come up for air on the news front, boy will you be surprised!
Completely agree on television. Have not watched it for 30 years now. We rent Netflix DVDs, which offers a superior selection to streaming. And don't watch them much either. RP and reading, that's most of it for us.
As for this song, Chet was one of the masters of the instrument. Herein an example.
RP and reading. Two of my most pleasurable activities.

I haven't watched Television for about 8 months, and have avoided as much "news" or other "current event programming" as possible in that time; heck, RP is about as close to "social media" as it gets for me.
And guess what? I'm so much happier and have enjoyed life a LOT more. LONG LIVE RP and PEACE!!!

*bump*
You know the fix? Stop watching television or listening to non-listener supported radio. I did, and it is bliss.
You are 100% correct, haljordan….and I agree, the bliss you speak of is real!! Long Live RP and short live b.s.!!

I always made it a personal contest to hit the mute button as quickly as possible when commercials started. Then I simply gave up on watching TV altogether. That was about 8 years ago and I never had the feeling I have been missing out on anything.

sweetness and light of a
god.
Not even close. You are comparing a jazz- and tzigane-inspired artist with a country music player.
Clearly you are not a musician. So called "country players" like Jerry Reed and Chet could hold their own with anyone, including Django

Maybe you're not familiar with Atkins' work, but he was much more than a "country music player". How he compares to Django Reinhardt is a different matter, but Atkins certainly admired and emulated Reinhardt's work.

Check out "Sails." It's beautiful, and you'll love it!

This is one of the main reasons I always turn to another channel as soon as a commercial starts. I resist my brain being trained by commercial propaganda.
Now, I can enjoy this tune ...

Once when I was on a cruise ship I was practicing on deck and drew a little crowd. When I was done, one lady told me "You're good but you're no Chet Atkins."
Actually, it's the only Chet Atkins quote I know. ;-)

I keep thinking of Tom Bodette.
esurance will leave the lights on....
which is too bad cause it's actually a nice song!

If they use Beethoven to sell string cheese, nothing is exempt.
Relax and enjoy unhampered by distractions.
I have no idea who John Krazinski and Jim Halpert are. Apparently I'm better off not knowing.
I'm with you. Sometimes, apparently, ignorance *is* bliss.
you don't need a gun, it has an on/off switch
I was a little saddened to hear this on that insurance commercial, but that is the way of the world now days, isn't it.
Yes, all I can think of with this song now is John Krazinski's voice and buying insurance... bleh!

Makes me want to book a room at a Motel 6
Is that a positive or negative review of this tune?
Sorry to be rude, but that is one sorry-ass reason for hating on a tune by one of the world's greatest guitar masters. Solution: Watch less TV.
Makes me want to book a room at a Motel 6
Ha! We'll leave the light on for ya !
Yeah? Choke on it.

Love the guitar on the cover.
Nothing like a hollow-body. Sweet.
Love the guitar on the cover.
(in reference to the awesome charicature) I dunno that Jimmy Page really belongs there with the rest; he's rather a lot of a hack compared to Chet, and Jimi, and Frank, and Carlos.... = )
I'm going to assume you made that Jimmy Page comment to get attention. ALL of them are "hacks" - in the sense that they were influenced by prior guitar greats. That shouldn't factor in to what they've all accomplished on their own. Acknowledge the influences, but also give kudos to what they produced as a result of their influences. Page more than paid his dues. (I'd add Brian May to this list, because dammit, he BUILT his own guitar.)
I absolutely love Chet Atkins' music. It was the one guitar that Mom, Dad, and I could listen to in total agreement. I cherish those moments a lot more these days...
