Who am I to tell her
Who am I to play god
Who am I to think I can go it alone
Something tells me girl this is bringing you down
Something tells me this is bringing me down
We've been through some changes
Always seem to hold on
Lately it feel like you can't take anymore
Something tells me girl this is bringing you down
Something tells me girl this is bringing you down
Forever my friend
Forever my love
Forever the woman that I'm thinking of
I just think if we keep our hearts together
I Just think if we build on this trust that we have for one another
Baby we can make this last a lifetime
Who am I to tell her
Who am I to play god
I don't know just what's for real anymore
Something tells me girl this is bringing you down
Something tells me girl this is bringing you down
Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm right
Maybe it's the last thing you want to hear me say
I just think if we keep out hearts together
I just think if we build on this trust that we have for one another
Maybe we can make this last a lifetime
Forever my friend
Forever my love
Forever the woman
That I'm thinking of
I just think if we keep our hearts together
I just think if we will build on this trust that we have for one another
Maybe we can make this last a lifetime

I'm giving this a 10 because of the way this song makes me feel.

This is a rare song that makes captures an emotion, that first spark of hope and love when you realize that your life is completely bound to someone else's in only the best ways.  It captures the joy, struggles, pain, and fulfillment that comes with finding the one person that makes it all worthwhile.

what bryonape said . . .and i think there is quite a bit of joni is several of his songs even though he credits stephen stills for inspiration and start. ray is a really underrated artist whose work on shows that play muzak do him no favors. then put on repo man.

Are we still talking about Ray LaMontagne?  He's more of a singer of modern American traditionals than a rock god.

Or are we still chafing over a comment, directed at your relentless h8red, in some other thread?
Ray Rules!
I rate it most excellent, the man's really good to this old pair of ears  : )
Just bumped it up to 7. Going to see him in two weeks! Should be awesome.{#Roflol}

Neither was I, at first.  Now that I'm over his breathy voice -- a trait I adore in female vocalists, but not in males -- I get a sense that he's trying to bring out something deep.  And if you're trying to sing about something deep, you need the instruments to stay safely and quietly behind the vocal tracks.

That, and my younger son and his wife gave me this CD for Christmas last year and it reminds me of them.

He has a voice smooth as silk

I haven't seen him play but I do think part of the live experience is the interaction with the performer and crowd/audience. A little insight into the tune, the odd acknowledgement to the crowd doesn't take much effort. Some of the other songwriters/singers I have seen were great at this, people like Jackson Browne, Bruce Cockburn, Lyle Lovett or Ian Andersen. Johnny Cash was an audience charmer and it was part of his stage show and big personality. Hey even Mick gives the audience a little. So I can understand Matt finding this part of Ray's show to be unwhelming.

I'm hearing Dan Fogelberg with a soulful edge. Pleasant but not especially innovative chord changes. Nice overall, for at least 10 more listens.
This guy must have the best publicist south of Katy Perry. His music is everywhere, on tv shows, commercials, playing every time I drive in the car listening to xrt...he gets around. (Personally I am not that impressed.)

I've already got the music on CD or the like. I expect a more enhanced experience from a concert. Methinks Tracy Chapman vocally... Instrumentally it's strains of Zep's That's the Way...

Funny, I was just thinking Tracy Chapman too and I do not mean it as a compliment. It's too bad because the first few times I heard him he sounded pretty good, but then with overplay here and the songs starting to sound the same I have to mute it.

I love both his albums, and went to see him live in London at the Hammersmith Apollo last week. What a disappointing show: the music was a tiny bit more country than the album (but still very good), but Ray never said one word to the crowd, just head down and played – he didn't even introduce his band. I know Van the Man used to get up to this kind of "I'm shy" stuff, but when 3000 people have paid upwards of 20 quid each he could at least have said "Hello".
Not exactly true, he said hello on both night and introduced his band both nights. I know this as i have recordings from both nights. He NEVER says anything to the audience generally, why should he? You go for the music at the end of the day and i have to disagree with you about those performances, they were both exceptional in my opinion. Again,if you had never seen him until hammersmith then i can tell you most of his concerts are done in a more country,(the band( style and i love it.
Everytime I hear Ray LaMontagne, I like him more and more! Very good sound.

The chords and change ups are very Poco....
Yes, poco, southern cross, excellent.
I think this album is now up there with Graceland by Paul Simon...not too many collections you can listen to straight through over and over again.

Lots of comments here addressing the similarities between this song and other, more classic material. Seems that this is derivative of alot of other songs. its just ok though. 6/10 perhaps
Christened ''Raycharles,'' Ray was destined for a career in music.

Can't get enough of Ray LaMontagne!!! The new album is great too! Ray seems to be evoking all of what was good with the early seventies singer/songwriter movement. Sounds a lot like Moondance era Van Morrison. Lots of good, simple instrumentation with soulful vocals. More please!
I agree, but I definitly like this ablum more than "Till the Sun Turns Black". Either way, I too think he's definitly up there with Van, Bobby D, and Neil Young, just to name a few....
haha i missed it again, by 2 songs. just my luck. (i also shouldnt have been late to work)

If they mated: Yes and Damien Rice
finally some music that doesn't come out of a can

I feel the same way about you. What a great tune, with such a unique approach. Does the genre really matter? It's an excellent tune. Period. The end. Bye bye.
