Sheets of empty canvas
Untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me
As her body once did

All five horizons
Revolved around her soul
As the Earth reaches the Sun
Now, the air I tasted and breathed
Has taken a turn

Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands
Chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything
All the pictures have
All been washed in black
Tattooed everything

I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter
So why do I sear?

Mm, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning
How quick the Sun can drop away
And now my bitter hands
Cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
All the pictures have
All been washed in black
Tattooed everything
All the love gone bad
Turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be, yeah

Uh-huh
Uh-huh
Woo
I know that someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky
But why, why, why can't it be
Why can't it be mine?
Ah, yeah
Uh, woo-hoo

Very powerful lyrics and they match the tune and the delivery. Fabulous.

I was impressed with how the crowd sounded. They knew every word. Kinda sent a chill through me.
Can somebody please "REAL" lyrics to this song
(you know what I mean, and I need a good laugh)
probably my fav pearl jam song. takes me back to when it came out and soooo many memories of that time period for me. my how time marches on so swiftly.
thank you for the reminder.
You are killing me with your playlist tonight.... in a good way.......
I'm a mad keen PJ fan and the crowd sing along at all concerts one way or another, but yes, this really is terrific - the band love it too.   Also at some concerts they have a lovely lady on stage doing 'sign language'.  ❤️

AND with regard to Environmental activism:

Pearl Jam has been active in environmental causes for most of its 30+ years existence. The band and its members have won honors for raising money, climate change educational efforts and more. They also invest money in environmental health projects to reduce the group’s carbon footprint.

This 74 year old lady [fyi my music was mostly '66-'75 - Beatles, Byrds, Stones, Floyd, Hendrix, ELP,  Led Zep, Cream, CSN, Eagles, Jackson Browne, Steely Dan,
Soundgarden - ohh the list goes on and I've seen most of them too]  last  saw them  in July 2018 London Arena, where yep, we all sang  back to him/them.  Awesome times.

Don't suppose I'll be going to more concerts, who knows, but hey, I've had a wonderful time following this terrific band.

Thanks for the memories guys.

Oh yeah?? As Tom Petty about "Breakdown, " McCartney about "Hey Jude" as only two examples.

If you ever wrote a masterpiece, which I sincerely doubt you have, you would love it if your adoring audiences sang it to you.

Eddie does say "You try".
"It's not exactly Eddie's though..." And "I Will Always Love You" wasn't Whitney Houston's song. But her interpretation as an artist elevated that 1972 song, originally written by Dolly Parton, to a whole new plane. Dolly herself even said she was driving in the car and when it came on the radio she broke down crying and had to pull over. Sometimes the artist makes the difference and it's why we love a song so much.
Gee, I've already rated it a 10.
Eddie: "You try."

Me: mumble mumble...  ??

I don't think I've ever known even a quarter of the lyrics on these songs.  There's a reason Pearl Jam is in those misheard lyrics videos on YouTube.

Pedantic.
Can you imagine what it must be like to have shared this epic experience singing along with the band and crowd?

Wow!
That sing-along is fucking orgasmic!
Nothing beat the bass in the studio version's intro.

I AGREE!  COMPLETELY!!!!!!!!

a bit over done with the praise methinks,

yeah its a good song/piece of music but slowing it down and letting the crowd pee their pants ( sorry shorts, for you dumbass yanks ) doesn't elevate this to the exalted levels of 8 and beyond

Missed them when my daughter was a teenager and totally into them. Glad to have caught up eventually. Better late than never.

It's basically a three-chord song.

Before Eddie's lyrics, it was just Stone's "E Ballad."

Just yanked my rating from 9 to 10
It's.........just like..........being there....
The ratings stopped work on my machine.  Never mind, already a 10.
🖤
Extraordinary. This live version is taking me even higher than the plane I’m currently travelling on. The crowd is pushing the song to sublime levels.

It's the fans who pay the bills, isn't it? Let em sing!!
most enjoyable rock tune on this rainy day in so cal
Fun fact -This performance was on the 13th anniversary of Pj playing together as a band. It was recorded live at Benaroya Hall where the Seattle Symphony performs -an acoustically perfect room. The entire performance is worth every second. Thanks Bill for bringing this gem out today.
It's my birthday, so thanks Bill  for Black :)

Must never have gone to a concert. Maybe you have, but did not know the performer or their music that you kept your mouth closed. Like you should have with this comment.

Up 1 from 9 to 10.
Wow, that was pretty damn moving. Must have been awesome to have been there.
I saw PJ at MSG in the mid-2000s, and was surprised and impressed by the avid fanbase they still had. Every song was full of audience singing like here, and it was magical.

Yes it does!  When the song ends!
Black is not bad. not crazy. for human but.
Nothing beats being part of a crowd of fans singing along on a masterpiece like this. Must have been a fantastic experience that I can barely imagine listening to it.

My wife and I were at a sing-along showing of "Bohemian Rhapsody" in San Francisco last weekend.  Everyone wore Queen crowns.  This version brings to mind the scene in the recording studio where Brian Mayne is thinking about how to involve the audience and came up with the stomp stomp clap.  He wanted there to be connection between the band and the performers.  What I find beautiful about this live version is I think I feel that connection, can imagine being there.  How I wish I'd actually been there.
Loving the live version and the sing-along.

I LOVE IT!   The crowd singing is fun. They were having a great time.
Ugh ugh ugh. Triple ugh. Tossers' Ball stuff.

un grande 9!!!
WOW....as a 'slowly becoming a fan of PJ' I have to say that was absolutely stunning, the guitar solo outro gave me chicken skin and the crowd verse did too...and I don't even know the song!
My rating went up to a 7 and maybe next time it'll be an 8?  Long Live RP!!
Outrageous guitar !!   I cried it was so beautifully played.
Sweet merciful crap, Eddie... Jeez. No question... TEN.
And a solid TEN for those voices in attendance too.

Actually, it can't get any worse than this.  Oy.
I'm usually not a big fan of listening to an audience sing rather than the band ... but in this one, it works for me.  Not quite sure why.

And no, that's not another snarky swipe at Vedder's voice, which I like just fine thankyouverymuch.  ;-)
It doesn't get any better than this!

Yeah, no users of valium or other drugs at the Pearl Jam concert, fer shur.  But that is not the point, is it?  Schmaltz is schmaltz, and this definitely qualifies.
absolutely awesome song, Vedder has Andaz (style) and POWER

Anyone ever hear that urban legend that spawned from Vedder's refusal to let this song be released as a single since it was "too personal"? Might have just been something fabricated from whole cloth by an idiot friend...

It's not an urban legend: the band refused to release Black as a single despite the label insisting that it was a good idea. They didn't refuse to play it, neither Eddie Vedder refused to sing it. They simply didn't want it to become a single, and it didn't. As a result, the only singles coming out of Ten (1991) were Alive, Even flow and Jeremy.
I will never tire of this song  {#Hearteyes}

{#Good-vibes}
I admit, this group, and this guy's singing, sometimes vex me to no end; however, I find this, over the years, to've become treasurable.

Wishing there was a PSD on my Roku, but unfortunately not. Just had to turn it off. Great lyrics, but the singer is so very awful.

Wow.  How did I miss Pearl Jam when they were young, new and fresh.  (Same way I missed Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Rush when I was younger, maybe.)  Glad they are still out there and relevant so I can catch up now.
Just one word needed to describe that song. GOOOOOOOOOODLIKE!

For me, it's the cheesy as Hell guitar solo at the end that kills an almost bearable PJ song...

I should hank that solo, however, because without it, I might have to give this song a high rating -- perhaps even a 3.
