Where I had hidden myself somewhere in your charm
Our golden handshake has been smashed into this shape
It's taken magic to a primitive new place
Watch 'em run
Although it's the minimum
Heroic
We hunched together in one chair out on the deck
In snow that froze and fell down on the modern set
It looked as if I picked your name out of a hat
Next thing you know, you are asleep in someone's lap
Watch 'em run
Although it's the minimum
Heroic
We quit the room
Quit so our thoughts could rest
Rest them, I'll never move
That's when we grab ahold
Of whatever it is we fell into
Lousy with your kept time
With what the majestic cannot find
In the business of your lives
The perception, it is wrong
Mile after mile
The phantom taste drinking wine from your heels
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la (We have arrived too late to play the bleeding heart show)
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la (We have arrived too late to play the bleeding heart show)
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la (We have arrived too late to play the bleeding heart show)
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la (We have arrived too late to play the bleeding heart show)
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la (We have arrived)
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la (We have arrived)
Hey-la, hey-la, hey-la, hey-la
I want to learn how to play the drums just so I can play this song.
Pretty good, eh?
I love this song. And I still love this music video that some high school kids put together (gulp!) 16 years ago, using this song. Fan Video
Thanks for that! Ummm, “Neko Case’s face”??
From wiki:
Neko Richelle Case (/ˈniːkoʊ ˈkeɪs/;[2] born September 8, 1970)[3] is an American singer-songwriter and member of the Canadian indie rock group the New Pornographers. Case has a powerful, untrained contralto voice, which has been described by contemporaries and critics as a "flamethrower,"[4] "a powerhouse [which] seems like it might level buildings,"[5] "a 120-mph fastball,"[6] and a "vocal tornado".[7]

Flamethrower voice, eh? Level buildings?
love this set of descriptions
And yet it comes across as a very empty expression of joy, an imitation of joy. I'm not sure why, it just impresses me that way. Lack of exuberance in the singing, perhaps.
Maybe because that's pretty much what the lyrics portray? A relationship that popped up seemingly out of nowhere which feels stale and gone astray? I personally could see that being sung as an empty expression of or an imitation of joy. A couple that's screwing on smiles while trying to figure out where to next for the benefit of everyone else, maybe? At least that's always how the song's came across to me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yep. There's a big difference between beautiful poetic abstract lyrics, and overwrought, self-consciously quirky lyrics that sound like they were made with a random word generator. This song is definitely the latter.

Working from home today...
CRANK IT!!!!!
It's my new reality - working from home, chair dancing and cranking RP. The office is such a let down these days.
CRANK IT!!!!!
Agreed. The meaning of the lyrics to this song confound me.
c.
I never understand their lyrics, but I love how this song builds and builds.

it is their traditional concert closer.
God bless AC Newman and Neko Case.

I remember! It was for University of Phoenix and 14 years later it is still my favorite song.

I missed the 'Ging Gang Gooly' at the start though!

Also, Neko Case's voice is just fantastic.

That's a good idea, a repeat button on RP :-)
What dya think, Bill?
One of the best outros of all time. Godlike indeed.

We don't know yet whether either will appear on In the Morse Code of Brake Lights, due out later this month.
It should be noted, however, that both Neko and Dan have been touring less and less with the band; Kathryn has been picking up Neko's vocal parts in live performance. It wouldn't be unusual to suspect that eventually there will be an album without Neko.
Thanks - it seemed that the OP was misinformed about Neko's presence on The New Pornographers' albums to date.
Interesting information about their touring lineup - wasn't aware of that.
Which albums does Neko not sing on?
Neko has sung on every album by The New Pornographers to date; Dan Bejar was absent from Whiteout Conditions, however.

Not all. His niece sings on the later albums.

Oh yeah.

Yep, I'm almost to that point, too.
The part where they go into the hey-la hey-la is pretty great.
Edit: That didn't take long. It simmered at an 8 for years, bumped it to a 9 a while back, and 2 weeks after posting this, I made it a 10. Just thought I should let everyone know.

Slow to the show there Scott.

Yes. She does vocals on all the NP albums.
It's a bit opaque, but I think these guys sussed it out.

Yes, indeed, that is she.
yes
Strange: does it remind anyone else of the ending of Chicago's "Feeling Stronger Every Day"?
Agree, the song is high quality, but that ending part is just over the top amazing. And yea, I do hear a bit of "Feeling Stronger Everyday" in there. Not ripping them off,but the same type of transition and ending.

Hey-La
I said it before, but incorrectly, when I swapped Again for Dance.
That drummer is a maniac. Channeling Keith Moon.

You mean the annoyingly repetitious part?
A song that captures some essence of 60s-00s and sounds great today.
Thanks RP and thank you Y. for the free huge stereo system!

I believe he was paid by the beat.

You need to be listening to the drums.
Refreshing lift after Reg Dwight.
Me too! I think every fill is different - love it.
Can't get enough of the song "Backstairs".

Shins, anyone? Steely Dan? Cryptic lyrics are just fine in my book.
