Well, oh, they might wear classic Reeboks or knackered Converse
Or tracky bottoms tucked in socks
But all of that's what the point is not
The point's that there ain't no romance around there

And there's the truth that they can't see
They'd probably like to throw a punch at me
And if you could only see 'em, then you would agree
Agree that there ain't no romance around there

You know, oh, it's a funny thing, you know?
We'll, tell them if you like
We'll, tell them all tonight
They'll never listen
Because their minds are made up
And course it's all okay to carry on that way

'Cause over there there's broken bones
There's only music so that there's new ringtones
And it don't take no Sherlock Holmes
To see it's a little different around here

Don't get me wrong though, there's boys in bands
And kids who like to scrap with pool cues in their hands
And just 'cause he's had a couple of cans
He thinks it's alright to act like a dickhead

Don't you know, oh, it's a funny thing, you know?
We'll tell them if you like
We'll tell them all tonight
They'll never listen
Because their minds are made up
And course it's all okay to carry on that way
But I said no, oh no
Well, you won't get me to go
Not anywhere, not anywhere
No, I won't go, oh no, no

Well over there, there's friends of mine
What can I say, I've known them for a long, long time
And yet they might overstep the line
But you just cannot get angry in the same way

No, not in the same way
Said not in the same way
Oh no, oh no, no

According to Wiki, "Dross is a mass of solid impurities floating on a molten metal.", "Dross is distinguished from slag" and "Dross is a wasteful material." Perhaps I'm being a little harsh.. it's been a long day. I'm truly glad to be of service, enlightening the world with new descriptives. My grammar is perhaps a little 'ropey' but never let it be said that I Monsieur Montyontherun, cannot come up with a succinct adjective. I accept that some will find said song 'likeable', but alas after much contemplation, I still consider it to be 'pants' I bid you good day. Wizzuvv_oz wrote:

I am pleased by the fact that this forum attracts listeners of such intelligence as to increase my vocabulary, and I would like to thank RP for providing this unexpected benefit (chuckle). This aside, I politely disagree with the characterization of this song as dross. I do not find it to be unpleasant. On the contrary, I find it to be rather enjoyable! :-) p.s. I'm not trying to be (too much of) a dick, but sometimes quick emailing is a little bit imprecise. I'll try to make it a more clear when I'm kidding. Still have problems with this group - even though they've outlived my 'one-hit-wonder-before-sinking-back-into-oblivion' tag. Tracks I've heard off the new album are growing on me more than from this album, so maybe I'll just eat a few of my words. (ps upped this track to a 4 ) Ngoziman wrote:

dross. There's a useful word I'm not familiar with. This forum is better than my Merriam Webster word o' the day! Thanks RP. On a lighter note, I kinda like the song. Not total dross.
let say....a bit overrated??
I'll be checking them out tonight at the Coachella Festival...looking forward to it :-)

Maybe the crashing thrash-metal start folowed by a more mellow and reflective poignancy is a metaphor for the rhythm of romance?

Cheeky monkeys
Fun track. As someone who enjoys a lot of the recent rock for recalling the late 70s and 80s, only time will tell which bands are still here in 10 years and which arent. I can recall Oasis and Blur being all the rage back in the 90s. From a USA perspective, where are they now? 'Split up, producing music instead of making it, what....?
Not the best song on this album but good.
i'm going to be interested to see them at coachella this year
OOOOOH .. SO THIS IS WHAT ARTIC MONKEYS SOUND LIKE .. I DIG.. I'VE BEEN HEARING A BIT OF BUZZ ABOUT THESE GUYS.. RP ROCKS INDEEDY!
You guys made my day. Arctic Monkeys! :D :D :D
Love them completely. I love the entertaining language, the accent, the fact they write about completely silly things. . . Love them.
These kids should make all of us optimistic. Or a little less pessimistic, anyway. Or maybe just mystic.
The intro was serioulsy painful, but it turned out okay once it got the groove going....

"And over there there's broken bones There's only music, so that there's new ringtones" Gave me an idea for a new breakfast cereal: Cynical Minicles. Love it. And he's only 20 or something. What a grumpy old git he'll be when he's 60...

just simply brilliant. I saw them here in Baltimore in June and you really cant appreciate the album until you've seen them live and then you realize - WOW they really are only 18 yrs old and it makes you realize what an achievement this album is and how brilliant they really are... hope they can follow it up.
I thought, now mari, this is a very positive attitude to take, though green with envy, so I took a trip to YouTube and there they are, like you said, just lads, and they're goin' for it, good on ém I say, they can only get better as they mature, like all of us, hopefully Go Monkeys!
I like Arctic Monkeys, but isn't it kind of cruel to play them right after Joe Walsh? Hard act to follow. It's like Sting singing with Pavarotti...Or Bono with BB King.
It sounds fresh. Not bad as flavor of the month, but this sound wont last the test of time.

Thanks for playing this new band. It's good to mix some new music into the play list.
A great tune for a Friday afternoon
A lot of hype, but hey, if they can follow it up...
it's like alternaska

Favorite band of 2006!
Would ARCTIC MONKEYS like a banana band???
Gotta love this one, especially the big finish.

Speaking of pompous and angst-ridden... Were you horribly abused by America teenagers at some point in your life, or are you just as much an ass as the people you like to stereotype?
I love these guys more every time I hear them. It's not ordinary for a new band to make me want to dance the way that I did twenty years ago.
GBV good, Arctic Monkeys, not so much.
I keep liking this band more and more as I'm exposed to more and more of their stuff. The intro to this song is also an excellent segue from Funk #49 - go Bill, go! Ook! Ook! (shiver)

I would like to like this band but I just can't bring myself to it. First the name is stupid. There's the Clash all over this song only they did it better. All in all, as I said before, it's just ordinary. Not worth the hype. Not at all.
A very likable, enthousiastic and talented young band with their musical heart on the right place! It's a shame they became the hype like they are (were), it almost makes it impossible to simply judge their music ... which is actually pretty good (but not overwhelming)

Sounds like old Mott The Hoople or ancient Bowie --which, of course, is pretty cool. Dig the variety on RP! Like a microcosm of a musical Universe!

My sentiments exactly. In fact I'm bored with them already. To Mr. Australia. Mate, It's so cliche to automatically trash Americans. I'd be comfortable matching my IQ to yours anyday or my knowledge of art and cultures. I do suck at spelling though.

I like it. If anything its a throw back to the early stones sound. These guys have an undeniable talent especially for their age. Loosen up
I'm struck with the following thought: Man...did Andy Summers change music forever (along with Sting and Stewart). Slow this puppy down slightly, and it's the Police (at least the first half of the song).
I just don't get the excitment over these guys

This year's Strokes. Nuff said.

No FM on my dial would play them. Of course I come from a land where there are Arctic monkeys (at least Dec-Feb in the bars) These guys are fun with attitude. I like it.

This one is irritating . . . well, it just picked up at the end. Vocals stank. The music borders on being adventurous, but doesn't quite make it there.
These guys are sure cheeky Monkeys! They flamed their fans at sxsw. Young kids too overwhelmed by their success.

Catchy. The more I hear it, the more I like it.
I have their debut album, and they've been getting serious 'Press' here in the UK.........to be totally honest, I don't rate them all that much.......it must be all 'smoke and mirrors' with these guys' management company? Good luck to them though...........I give them no more than two more albums before they disappear off the face of the musical planet.
More agreement for liking the beginning and then the rest is okay, but nothing special. - Riff

Not the best track on the album, but a fine new band none the less.
