A good impression of myself
Not much to conceal
I'm saying nothing
But I'm saying nothing with feel

I simply am not here
No way I...
Shut up, be happy
Stop whining please

Because of who we are
We react in mock surprise
The curse of "there must be more"
So don't breathe here,
Don't leave your bags

I simply am not here
No way I...
Shut up, be happy
Stop whining please

The dust in my soul
Makes me feel the weight in my legs
My head in the clouds
And I'm zoning out

I'm watching TV
But I find it hard to stay conscious
I'm totally bored
But I can't switch off

Only apathy from the pills in me
It's all in me, all in you
Electricity from the pills in me
It's all in me, all in you
Only MTV, cod philosophy

We're lost in the mall
Shuffling through the stores like zombies
What is the point?
What can money buy?

My hand's on a gun
And I find the range, God tempt me
What did you say?
Think I'm passing out

[x2]
Only apathy from the pills in me
It's all in me, all in you
Electricity from the pills in me
It's all in me, all in you
Only MTV, cod philosophy

Water so warm that day (water so warm that day)
I counted out the waves (I counted out the waves)
As they broke into shore
I smiled into the sun

The water so warm that day
I was counting out the waves
And I followed their short life
As they broke on the shoreline
I could see you
But I couldn't hear you

You were holding your hat in the breeze
Turning away from me in this moment
You were stolen as black across the sun

Water so warm that day (water so warm that day)
I counted out the waves (I counted out the waves)
As they broke into shore (as they broke into shore)

Checkout this live version at approx 9:20. Guitar tone is ridiculous, but listen to the interlude riff where the bass drops out, right after the guitar-bass duet in post chorus. When bass man comes back in......that is bad boy bass tone!

Thank You for the info & the Link!   I will check it out!

Same here!  I  Agree!   It is 4am & my coffee is kicking in,   ...great way to start the day!   17+ minutes of  Porcupine Tree
This music is the work of God
GREAT TUNE!! Excellent drumming. Thanx RP!
Some guys got it, some not. But this ones were born to it. That makes the difference!

definitely a cult track !!

too long. Sorry Steve.
Came on at 8:15am, just as my coffee was kicking in!!  What a way to start the day!!!

Probably one of the few 17+ minute songs that I wish were longer still.  Forever PT!

Great tune. I like it!  Very long, but very good!

I was thinking this song just goes on and on and on. then saw the length and confirmed it does
Sitting here on a Friday night home alone, wifey's out so the volume knob works again & got FOABP vinyl playing loud - this masterpiece is on right now.... Bill, you've not played this since 2007 according to the log, not sure if that's correct but in any case... play it again Bill :-)

yea same here, I didn't like it at first, but it does grow on you in a very nice way.  I didn't read through all the posts, but I hear Radiohead in the first bits of singing.

Way Out Of Here is my current fav with the "Soundscapes of Robert Fripp" - guitar god of King Crimson back in the day

Got my tix for Oct. 10 in Asheville. Can hardly wait.

I'm going to the October 23rd show here in Cincy with a bunch of friends- This will be my third time seeing the band. I can't wait either!!!! Damn 23 days to go Last time I saw them live (at the House of Blues in Cleveland last May) they played this juggernaut live and holy hell it kicked some serious.
Their drummer Gavin Harrison is jaw droppingly good
Sounds like they've got a pretty good drummer. fuh2 wrote:

That's what she said. Thank you and good night.
Yet had the luck to see them once... and I'll have it one more time, at the Olympia in Paris! I'm sure it will we great another time. Thx, RP!
ummmmmm...........i'm not getting the link between this and scarborough fair?
What an aural journey! The sounds these guys use are like nothing I've ever heard before. Volume higher and higher.

This tune feels a lot more like APC or Rush than Tool. It's a great song, too, don't anyone let my prior comments let you think otherwise. I just don't agree with the Tool-bashing.
Gee, I think they sound like Porcupine Tree. This album keeps growing on me. Love PT and RP!
If you don't think Porcupine Tree are awesome, then there is something very wrong with you and you are different and strange. All your friends think Porcupine Tree are great.
Nice set. Oh. That was all one song... 8. Just the same.

I love that even though my boss interrupted this song, it was still playing when he left my office. PT is the best...along with RP, of course!

A long time ago, I posted a comment that Carter Beauford was god. Now, I know that Gavin Harrison is... ;-)
Wow, do we get the full 17 minutes here on RP? Outstanding. I never knew that Alex was on this. Cool!

The vocals are not 'weak' per se. They are simply understated. Awesome harmonies all the same.
Actually Alex Lifeson from Rush does play the guitar solo about a third of the way through the song. Wilson does all the rest of the guitar work though
Awesome song.

Great stuff, but I think the singer is quite weak in the whole ensemble. The drummer makes me want to practice more on my drumset! Eight eight eight!
SW is actually quite the vocalist. There's an acoustic version of Sentimental (the track that follows this on on the record) floating about that is simply stunning. But you are quite correct, Gavin Harrison could quite possibly be the best drummer on the planet. And he's even better live.
Well the singer is a man named Steven Wilson who formed the band way back when. For the first 6 years he WAS Porcupine Tree- playing all instruments doing all vocals and writing. He writes about 98% of the music and lyrics, does all vocals and guitar work including writing bass and keyboard parts on some songs. I guess we'll just have to "put up" with his weak vocals Personally I adore him Kind of like saying I love Bob Dylan but I wish they would get a different vocalist hehe (now that I think about I bet some people do think that)
Thank you once again, Bill, for turning me onto yet another awesome band that I would otherwise never had heard of. Porcupine Tree is amazing. What a great song. Thank you Bill!

Agree, but PC is essentially the same band as Tool.
This IS still the same tune! 7, despite that.
Holy Mother of All Things Long! This is long. And absolutely bloody fantastic!!!

Both shows were the kind of experience where I was so blown away that I couldn't talk for about an hour, and I had to carry my jaw out of the show to keep it off the floor. Sucks that you saw 'em on an off night. Try again when they're on their own.
Maybe. It'll be a while though.

Totally. It helps that I really like the song but I just want to say THANKS again RP for playing music that doesn't fit a specific format! PT is a group that is growing on me, for sure.
Hope to see this godlike live sometime...

Wow! Interesting comments!?! I can certainly understand not being into Tool's music because it is dark, heavy and it has the wierd time structures. They are, however, extraordinarily talented musicians. Also, they have unique sound that they are entirley responsible for creating (unlike say Porcupine Tree, who is also a great band, but sounds quite a bit like its influences). Finally, Tool has an incredibly tight live sound, and they put on the best live show that I have ever seen.
I take it you never went to Summerfest... but: Tool played their set and left. They didn't even put on a show.
7... no 2... no 8... no 2 again. argh. Interesting for sure, but comparisons to Tool aren\'t making any sense to me though.
as cartman would say \"kick ass\"
That band is a phenomenon!!!
Thanx RP!
Great band, great CD!! Thanks, RP, for introducing me to PT. (They\'re a little \"harder\" than my tastes usually run, but at my age (52), that\'s not surprising.)
I love Porcupine Tree and I really dig RP Even the traditional forum trolls don\'t bother me here. Seriously everytime you get 500 people really happy about something they have in common the trolls have to come out and make their grunting noises and rude remarks. It\'s an internet tradition
Um.... wow?
My eternal thanks to Bill & RP for turning me on to PT a few years ago. I\'ve been a big fan ever since. Got to see them with Robert Fripp on the Deadwing tour - it was one of the best concerts in recent memory.
If not for RP I would have never heard PT and that would have been a loss. As it stands, I\'ve got tickets to see them in the lovely mountain setting of Asheville, NC come October. This 50-year old prog rocker can\'t wait to be the geezer in the crowd.
Where else would you hear a 17.5 minute song? RP rawks!
Bill, fantastic tune. First heard it hear, then went out and purchased this CD and In Absentia. Both phenomenal...
Wow. Rock out, Bill!
I like this album, but it\'s definitely structured to sit and listen to the thing all the way through in one sitting. The Deadwing is easier to break into song-sized pieces when you just want one great tune.
I agree with Dobber\'s comment. On PT\'s Deadwing the influence of Tool is quite obvious on certain tracks and Steven Wilson mentions Tool as an influence or \'interesting band\'on their site. I saw PT a couple of times yet (last time was june 26th in Eindhoven (NL) and again it was awesome! Great musicians and the sound was great!
The roughest song I have ever heard on RP.

In my opinion Tool have become just that, tools. They put on horrible shows, too. Ask anyone who went to Summerfest. And personally I don't feel that the talent of a single member in the band really compensates for the lack of otherwise mediocre talent that is the rest of the band.

The entity of songs building up the FOABP album with this inredible jewel in the middle is rather hard to be excelled by anything being produced in any genre today (IMHO of course). No wonder 4 of 6 tracks of this album are in RP's playlist. I bet at least one more will make it later on if not both of them. My deep respect and gratitude to Mister Wilson and PT. I'm still under the impression of the Cologne gig on June 22nd. And THX once more to Bill who dares playing gems like this in their full length glory.

Porcupine Tree really rocks! Another great band that RP turned me on to. Thanks Bill and Rebecca. You guys have incredible taste in music.

Steve Wilson is The Richard Wagner of rock. This piece is not only very operatic it breaks into new territory with its combination of riffs and great sound. As our DNA twists this may be the end/perfection of what is already a fuzzy rock & roll. It is a milestone at least. We are in new territory. Hats off!
