Man is born, man lives, man dies
And it's all vanity
And that's about the way it is with the merry-go-round
You get on
You go around
Standing in the saddle

Man is born
Man lives
Man dies
And it's all vanity
He tried thrills
He said "I gave myself to enjoy pleasure"
What are teenagers doing today?
They're trying every thrill there is in the books
We've got colored TV
But it still isn't satisfying
Man is born
Man lives
Man dies
And it's all vanity

You can't understand it, it's going so loud, and so forth,
And they're all wigglin' and wobblin' around and everything else and
And yet, they feel unsatisfied
And these disc jockeys they say here is a tune that is different
Hear the tone that is different

Man is born, man lives, man dies
And it's all vanity
You can't understand it, it's going so loud, and so forth,
And they're all wigglin' and wobblin' around and everything else and
And yet, they feel unsatisfied
And these disc jockeys they say here is a tune that is different
Hear the tone that is different

Man is born, man lives, man dies
And it's all vanity

Warren Wiersby is apparently the sampled preacher.

The instrumental part is, demonstrably, the same as "Stories" by Chakacha (video here).

So far, I have been unable to track down who the preacher is.  One poster claims it is Ken Nordine, but it doesn't, to my ears, sound at all like Nordine.

I thought there might be some answer on CAKE's site, but, if it is there, it is buried.

According to some commenters @ SongMeanings.com: Warren Wiersbe is the pastor sampled for this song.

And I bumped my 7 to 8 today.  CAKE is an awesome band and I like!  Long Live RP!!

Reference Ecclesiastes.

Well, it is the central theme of the song. Without it, you'd just have a pretty instrumental. Not that I'm quite sure what Cake are trying to say...

The "wiggling & wobbling" bridge cracks me up every time.   Does anyone know if this is an actual sample of a sermon or is it just the singer pretending to be a fundie preacher.

You know, I think I'd really like this song, except the "man lives, man dies" thing needs to be cut in half or less.   That got really old about halfway through.
I'm so sick I feel like dieing right now.

Somehow this song goes good with a Ricola!
This Cake is a little dry.
This should really be followed by Frontier Psychiatrist.
(With apologies to SmackDaddy who said it first.)

i'm pretty satisfied with my new large plasma TV
It is just to join the club! I agree so much

This sounds like a good time to stray from my computer.
I love Cake....but this song blows.

8 > 9   A genius slice of cake.

I'm requesting that they play this song at my viewing when I die.

more cake please —-all vanity

Don't like Cake - but this song is pretty cool. Sounds a little like the evil Reverend Jim "Jonestown" Jones.

I was wandering around downtown Dallas around 1974 and met some hippie types who were collecting money for some sort of new commune in South American and tried to talk me into joining them.  I've often wondered if it was Jonestown.

If one listens closely, the words of Solomon can be heard.
I just love these guys. {#Dance}

Even their B-sides are 10s! The dudes abide! The guitar is especially tasty on this one. Don't normally think of Cake as a guitar band.

If you never have and even if you're not a huge fan of the music there is always interesting news and advice on the website. (8)

Nah.

Absolutely. Any band with horns gets another point from me.

Probably my most favourite Cake song.

'Sides, I listen to RP to hear the tune that is different.

Contrived crap.

I love Cake, but don't understand this song. I'd rather hear Mahna Mahna if you're going to pick a song off the Rarities album.

Love Cake, but they have lost their energy.
I need to see this band live.

I concur.  I may not like a lot of what Cake does, but I'm glad they exist and that they never take themselves too seriously and are always stretching the envelope.  Rock music needs bands like Cake.

I'm not a big fan of Cake but there's something about this song....I kinda like it!  Perhaps it's the samples of the "sermon", reminiscent of Front 242's use of similar takes....

Cool Song! YEAH!!! {#Bananajam} {#Drummer}

reminded me... of a small hypnotic church in KY, would someone snap their fingers ,please!

Don't like Cake - but this song is pretty cool. Sounds a little like the evil Reverend Jim "Jonestown" Jones. Listen to A3's Exile In Coldharbour Lane's "Mao Tse Tung Said" to hear him.
I'm dizzy from the merry-go-round! {#Hearteyes}

I really like what they do with the imaging on this song; the base is also very nice and tight. I kindof thought that maybe at 192kbs soundstage just collapsed no matter what because most songs on rp sound kindof like that to me; but this song proved that theory wrong.
Very irritating.

Exactly, smdeeg! There definitely is some MC900 inside.
This Cake has gone stale.
no thanks.

The voice sounds strikingly like Jim White, but it's not from any of his albums that I know of. He's not a preacher, but he could definitely play one on TV.

very cool and unusual, I knew a psycho preacher like that once!
wasn't some of this used in NYPD Blue when Bobby lay dying??

ditto! I found a cool version they did of the Manna Manna, and now I play it weekly. ginger wrote:

Please make that man stop screaming and making distortion on my speakers. I love some of Cake's stuff. I hate this.
The distortion is in the track itself, not your speakers. It's not actually that loud. It is meant to sound like he is overloading his public address system.
